Not sure if anyone has been paying attention to the news, but California is all but bankrupt and is now threatening to close all Government offices 2 days a week!! I have read hundreds of articles on why California is in debt, but this one really got under my skin. I can't post the story because it's subscription based, but here is the scoop.
A guy rapes several girls, and gets charged with rape and several sex crimes and ends up in jail for 157 years. While in jail he rapped an inmate and the guy got back at him by stabbing him in the neck cutting his spinal cord, but not killing him. Now the guys is a quadriplegic and requires 24/7 medical care. Since the medical facilities did such a great job he ended up getting an ulcer on his back that got infected and he sued the prison system and won a claim for $750k. This does not include over $1.25 million the taxpayers had to pay for his medical care. All in all in 7 years the state has spent almost $2,000,000 on a guy who should have been killed to begin with. Since the state is in such financial trouble they wanted to simply release him and send him to a half way home and cut the cost to about a third, but wouldn't you know the court of appeals denied the request and now the tax payers will have to continue to spend almost $200,000 a year to continue caring for a convicted rapist.
