Why California IS and will continue to always be bankrupt!!!

I heard on the radio that there is 500 billion in pension obligations the state can't meet....

Not sure if that number is correct, but It sounds about right. The last I heard is there are over 3,000 retired government workers that collect over 100k a year and the number is growing daily. The problem with the government in cali is the amount of government workers they employ because every employee in power wants to be sure that every family member they have is taken care of. I heard on a radio station that the government here in cali hired 75 workers PER DAY every day including holidays and weekends for 3 years straight from 1997 to 2000!! Do the math 75x365x3!!!! The amount of employees we have is not only 3 times that of most other states, but the pay is about 30% more here and the pensions are said to be 45% hire than any other state. Because of the 1 sided union contracts that the government has agreed to they can't even let any of the leeches go!! Basically the unions have hundreds of millions in funds that they use the bribe most govenrment elected officials in return for job protection. The more workers the government employees the more money the union makes so the more they have to use to bribe other officials with. It's a never ended circle of greed that has been growing since the 80's and has gotten to the point where there is nothing that can be done. It's just amount of time that California makes it official and declares bankruptcy. As it is they can't borrow any money because their credit rating is a D and they can't sell bonds because that rating has dropped to the lowest possible investment grade before they say Non-Investment grade. I knew I should have gotten a government job when I could have.. If I did I would not only have job security I would be able to retire at 57 and collect over 80% of my pay!!

A simple way to get the leeches out of the system would be to pay them minimum wage. Only the people that really cared would take up the positions then. Put them on a decent pension when they retire.
Of course that will never happen because they vote for their pay increases!

that would work, but the unions protect their pay for a fee and force government based companies to pay more than twice what they should. Think about the old mob days when you had to pay to keep your business going and if you didn't guido would break a leg. It's the same concept here. Here is a good example. My cousin has a friend that is a bus drive for the LA school district. Typical bus drivers outside of union jobs can expect to get $14-20 an hour if they are lucky. However his job pays him $28 and hour and he typically works saturdays and holidays at time and a half and even double time. Keep in mind he's only had the job for about 5 years. He said it's tough getting overtime because most of the senior driver who can make as much as $40 an hour typically work a lot of over time and double time making about $160k a year. Not only that they have the option of retiring at 57 with 70% of benifits and can still take another full time job until 65 without being penilized. There are guys that have retired and took another full time job who are making almost $200k a year!!! Only in cali!

Pretty interesting thread LGHT. In regards to your first post- the main thing that strikes me is what's his face didn't get the job done. Sex offenders are the at the bottom of the totem pole in prison and are usually dealt with accordingly.

Never been union in my line of work, they vary widely by trade or profession I imagine. They probably do serve a purpose in some lines of work, in a checks and balances sort of scenario. I know a lot of folks working for slave wages here now just cause some people know some folks have no choice.

California is broke. So is most of the rest of the country though. It'd be interesting to see how one of the world's top ten economies would do with out the Federal/DC yoke. Looking forward to this November when full mj legalization is on the ballot. Can you say goodbye budget deficit? I guess it could get dicey w/ the feds later on, but c'mon... this is California! Not the town from the movie Footloose- get over it already! Or go live in AZ

Well the education system pay is 3rd in the nation and the kids come out in the worse percentage of the company. Imagine going to a 5 star restaurant and ordering fillet Mignon and getting frozen left over hamburger. That's what you get if you compare the cost of the teachers union to that of other major cities and the result they give you. Bottom line is the unions have robbed the tax payers for years and none the well has run dry. I myself will be voting for any legalizing of anything that will make money. I don't smoke, but if you can make 100 million taxing anything and at the same time save 100 million by not having to police it i'm all for it!!
