beautiful plants, wished mine looked as good as yours

Thanks Rodney! I know you are just being kind...I've seen your plants, and they are formidable, especially your Thai Birdseeds...

Thanks Trippa! Things are good here—I'm on my first vacation in 5 years, and my first chile-gardening vacation ever!

Lol, thanks Shane! Hopefully those stinky toes will be super tasty...I can't wait for the corking so I can try one!

Awww, Noah, that's exactly what I love to hear...I can feel my grandpa (best gardener I knew) grinning now...Really

:woohoo: look at that pepper forest. Plants look amazing, Gary. Great job, that light setup has really paid off, hasn't it? The shape of the Madame Jeanette would be similar like the Cili Goronong, only then a couple times bigger. The taste is also better :) Your Chilhuacle Rojo is doing great over here as well, but I keep nipping out the buds/flowers till I plant them out.

Thanks Stefan! Yes, lights are the only way to go from now on...I can't believe I wasted all those years trying to get healthy plants on the window sill...

Now the Madame Jeanette is about 3 times more compelling...Thanks for that dude... :drooling:

However many Chilhuacle you planted, it won't be enough...Ripened, dried, and flaked....You can inhale the history and spirit of Oaxaca from it...(I don't mean you should snort the flakes...just smell them...)

Looking great my friend. Those rows look MASSIVE! How high are they??

Thanks Matt! I haven't measured the bed height, but I would estimate 18 inches or so above the level of the lawn...

Even more excited now, Gary :D I got 9 Chilhuacle plants, Chilhuacle Amarillo (yours), Chilhuacle Negro and Chilhuacle Rojo (yours). Also the Brito's Mystery Peach, Yellow Bouquet are doing great. The Brito's stay pretty small however, but there are 3 plants in a P12 pot so kinda makes sense

I know it seems like I've been shining y'all, but I've been too busy in the garden to look at the inter webs...I took a vacation from work last week to attempt to finish building out the big beds in the country. As it turns out, I greatly underestimated the scope of the task, and only got one bed built. But it's built the right way, so I'm real happy:

moa_row1.jpg

All the construction you see here was done by hand; just me, a shovel, a hoe, and one of those claw-hand cultivators. I dug all the way down to the clay hardpan and built it back up with shredded branch hardwood (RCW) and Osmocote 14-14-14. The mulch layer is 2-3 inches of RCW. The first 6 plants are the MOA Scotch Bonnets (STEVE954), then 1 Yellow Seven (THSC), then 6 Bahamian Goat Pepper (FadeToBlack), 2 more Bahamian Goats (capsidadburn), and finally 3 Congo Trinidad (pic1). The next row will be built with the help of our company Bobcat track hoe, because my back says "You and that shovel are finished for now!"—That bed will host Madame Jeanette (meatfreak), Yellow 7 x Bonda ma Jacques (Spicegeist), 7 Pot Rennie (armac), and NagaBrain (romy6)...

Just caught up on your Glog. Love the variety you have. I've never seen that dog vomit mold before and the Jalapeno's like it, very interesting.

Good grow Gary

Thanks Rocket! That type of fungus growth is the beginning of the formation of healthy forest soil...

Lol, thanks Stefan! Man, I'm jealous you have the other Chilhuacle varieties in-ground. It's hard for me to comment on the Brito's Peach, because I never got around to potting mine past 3-gal. containers...They were small pods, but that could have been the reason...Yellow Bouquet, as I remember, was quite robust...

Everything looks great, except the slime mold of course

Thanks Charles!

Simply amazing!!! What's the deal with the dog vomit??? Is it vomit or a growth of some sort? I can't be puking on my plants. That would require way more Jack Daniels than I can afford.

 Thanks Pia! That would be a waste of good whisky for sure...

Its a smile mold sanarda. Shows a healthy soil.

Dude, separate the mass and wait a few days. It will physically move and reunite with its other self. Pretty epic. Loving the wood, feeling the flow.

Trip, Rich...I did that, and it did just what you said...Almost like it has a collective consciousness....

There's another colony in another bed that grew orange...Really looks like vomit...

I like the whole introduce it to a map of the us with food at major cities and watch it map out our interstate system thing.

Sweet!

Spicegeist said:
Wow, that looks perfect.  Those are going to be some happy plants...

Thanks Charles! The BMJ x Y7s are looking really robust...I may need to pot them up one more time before I get their bed ready...After I get started with the digging machine I'll know better how much time it will take...

So that is how you are supposed to do it. Very nice G Man!!!!

Beautiful "cheater" beds Gary.  Again, and as always.  Next one you do take a picture of the soil just under last years mounds if you can.  I want to see that beautiful broken down hardwood.

Thanks Noah! Will do!

Gary, I give you a alot of credit to tackle that work by hand. I can imagine getting into it from start to finish, the raised bed is nice and even with the right height for good drainage and air/root circulation.
The plants have come along way since the indoor start. They look great !
Were you satisfied with the lighting setup as compared to the past starts ?
I'm assuming that gave them the healthy stocky appearence.
Hey, you put my plants in the shade....................just ribbing ya
I see some MoA pods on your plants, none on mine yet, I've got a few on some other bonnet plants though. Time will tell.

Thanks! I knew what I was doing was bone-headedly inefficient, but I really just felt compelled to do it that way. There's something deeply gratifying about working that hard at that particular task all day long...My wife wonders why I don't expend that kind of effort on the flower beds...

Yes, I can't emphasize enough how much difference the grow lights made. Across varieties, species, growth habits, etc., the effect was a striking improvement in plant vigor and robustness. When I make the new markers I'll take porn pix of the FadeToBlack Goats—The main stems on those things are trunks...

I took that overview shot early this morning when the NE end of the row was still behind the trees...Trust me, every plant in that row gets 6-8 hours of full sun this time of year...

I'm trying not to get too excited about pods just yet...The overwinters (your Congos and Mike's Goats), however, have a nice set of fruit on them. I never did get to taste one those Congos last year, and I'm really looking forward to it!

Mm. Congos. My coworkers fell in love with that pecan wood smoke Congo. Heat an flavor was precise.

Curious to find out how the taste of the BMJ x Y7 will taste. Both flavor alone kicks arse. What will the shape and flavor be. Nice work ok the bed and the MoA. Fine is finally growing and ill need to move it out of the 1gal soon.

Will definitely let you know whenever I drop by the Metairie area. I digest my fix of crawduds ere but it's not the same

Wow Gary! Moving heaven and earth earth to make heaven! Love it...Gonna be some monster trees growing there for sure! What's your water setup out there? Ma nature, or do you have a well/pond you pump from? I ask because I will be close to your local when I FINALLY retire and plan to run pumps (probably solar powerd) for a drip system to water my rows...I'm gonna cheat and use a Massey Ferguson and turning plow to get my rows close though...and save my back the trouble! 150 acres of hardwood and 6 fully stocked ponds and a creek at my disposal! Between you and Silver Surfer I am taking all kinds of notes!!!

Great looking row of healthy plants Gary!  Excellant effort.  Sorry to hear about your back, but I know you'll be happy later on.  I'm sure we are all watching with great interest to your progress!
Rest up!  Bounce back next weekend. :drooling:
Later Mike
