Windchicken 2014

Got some sheet pots in from Grower Supply a couple days ago. I got this type so I could pull out the individual containers and replace them if need be, and they fit perfectly in my 11" x 22" Permanest Trays. Anybody in NW Louisiana need a couple of these? If I keep growing the same size garden every season these sheets should last me around 12 years:

These are the only C. chinense I'm growing this year: The NagaBrain, now in its F3 generation, is the happy accident of Florida THP mentor and all-around good guy romy6; seeds for the F2 Chocolate NagaBrain are from the talented and skillful Florida grower Tmudder; Bonda Ma Jacques x 7 Pot Yellow, the F3 generation, is the creation of the THP breeding wizard Spicegeist; Both 7 Pot Yellow and Naga Morich are from THSC seed; Dystopia is a project of North Texas grower joemomma; and Madame Jeanette comes courtesy of the incredibly generous Netherlands grower Meatfreak :

Wow, that's not something you want to happen to your plants :( The weather is really off, we're having one of the warmest winters in decades. Although we have lots of rain and strong winds that is still better then frost.

Thanks Stefan…I was out of town on business when the first freeze hit back in November, so this plant perished (or maybe not). Fortunately I saved seeds, and have 10 sprouts going as I type this.

Our weather is definitely changing. The summers are hotter and the winter is colder. Not only that, but the spring and fall are now shorter than ever. My time window to get plants in the ground is so short now—For me it's pretty much April or nothing. March is too cold and May is already too hot…

Glad  you have seeds sprouting already, Gary!  That's riding the bull!

Here are some pics of your NagaBrain F2's.  The first two are from the seed you sent and are just about one month old from hooks:

These are from the seeds in the pods from the F2 mother you sent, and are
at 7 weeks since hooking:

They seem to be doing okay so far.  Fingers crossed for a good grow all around!

Wow, PG, those are freaking gorgeous...I think I'll just skip growing the NagaBrain this year and leave it in your hands!

I agree Gary,

 The weather has been crazy!

I sure hope your wrong about the short spring, it REALLY needs to be normal this year!

Keep it green!

Thanks! I hope so too, Scott, but I'm afraid this may be the new normal...I can't lollygag around like I used to, at any rate...

Been a while since I checked in. The garden looks great Gary. If that frosty capsicum bounces back I'd say you got a winner. Good luck surviving the weather! This winter has been bananas.

Lol, thanks Adam...and thanks for stopping by!

Yes Gary I agree, Paul's NagaBrains are a little intimidating. Looks like there is a few warm days this weekend here, hope it finds you. Love the Ice Pequin!

Later, Mike

Lol...it's really good to know that the F3 grow is in such capable hands. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little bit jealous, but at the same time it's a huge load off my mind. This time last year I had the fantastically egotistical notion that the NagaBrain's future should lay in my hands only...that I shouldn't share seeds, because it needed to stabilize for 8 generations in my garden alone because only I knew which plant should be the progenitor...Can you believe that s**t? Hopefully by now I'm a little less of an insufferable ass....

Thanks for saying that about the pik. It means a lot coming from a photographer of your magnitude! As nearly as I can tell, the Austin climate is very similar to ours here in N. Louisiana, so I've got my fingers crossed that if the SmiterQ plant doesn't sprout back from the stump, that there will at least be some volunteers in the container...The next couple of months will tell....

Gary

Everybody is an insufferable ass in some aspect of there life at some time Gary ... some people just can't admit it ... ;) ...love the ice chilli shot ... not the thought of the health of it ,.but from a photo standpoint .. love it ...best of luck with this cold snap ... hope everything pulls through!!

Very cool that you decentralized the NagaBrain Gary! It's gonna give the strain much more resilience ultimately. Sometimes you have to break down a project and disperse its elements to get the best results. You may also end up with interesting new variance that strengthens the strain ultimately. Glad you've come around to such an anti-modernist way of thinking about the project!

Can't wait for pics!

 It's a long season, Mike!  Many ways to screw the pooch between now and plant-out time!

In two months, you southern growers will be leaving us in the dust!

Looking forward to see what everyone comes up with!

Lol, thanks Trippa… :P  Thanks for saying that about the photo of the "winter pequin". For me there's something quiet and peaceful about it…I think that's what I dig most about wintertime….

Wow, thanks for that Adam! You make a point I had not considered….Sometimes I'm able to get over myself, and make a good decision…You make me sound smarter than I actually am. Thanks for that!

Dude you've got mad skillz…Those plants are going to be trees…Thanks again for helping out with the F3 grow.

I'm overwintering my PG's Peruvian Market Aji seed mother in my garage…Brought her out to the driveway this morning to catch some of this warm sun, and realized she was covered with big, nice pods, a few of them ripe….So I had a nice snack of corn chips and fresh, crunchy, sweet-and-spicy Aji Amarillo pods on the way to work today… :drooling: Thanks so much for turning me onto that excellent, world-classic chile, PG. I've got 10 cells of a seed tray sown with her seeds, and they are popping up as I type this…We'll see how they do in the new "executive bed" of my home garden, which gets 5-6 hours of morning light only.

Good luck with your chile farm 2014 Gary! I will be watching from far away.

Hey Richard!!!! It's so good to hear from ya dude! I hope you're doing well…I think about you when I'm considering my "Lytle Family Row 2014": NuMex 6-4, Lumbre, and World's Record Big Jim (seeds from the very plant that bore the pods which set the Guiness record). In my bird pepper row I'm also growing their "Piquin", one of the parent varieties Faron used to create the Lumbre Chile. I would never have know about the Lytle family had it not been for you! Thanks!!!

I'm glad the Yellow Aji has been so successful for you, brother!

Thanks PG! What a nice surprise is this pepper...There's just something about a really good Aji Amarillo...It's not hard to see why it's so prized in the land of the Incas. Nothing else really compares to it...Your variety is far better suited to my climate than the Big-Jim-sized ones I've grown in the past. The taste, aroma, flesh, and heat level are just the same, but the productivity is just amazing....

Gary,

Those OW's are hangin' just fine!

I guess you have a bunch of natural light in your garage?

Mine have been outside since Thursday, and from the looks of things they're good until next Friday, woot!
