stc3248, 2013 Grow log, Season's Greetings and Season's End

Well here we go again! Those that saw my grow last year know that I was plagued by virus issues and many other problems, but I was still able to pull off the most amazing grow of my life. By season's end every plant was infected. Some keeled over, but others just kept right on trucking. I learned a ton, and hope to use it to pull off a season without that virus making a repeat appearance. It will be tough. I had huge numbers of pods, and many hit the ground and rotted, so there are sure to be some infected volunteers that show up. My grow this year will be MUCH smaller and focused on the varieties I liked best along with a couple new ones I really wanna try out.

First a couple of my money shots from last year...

I plan to use a similar grow setup to start with...here are a couple pics of how it looked...
P1000224.jpg

P1000226.jpg

My setup evolved as the season began. I started with a single t8 shoplight...the two shoplights and ended up with a single row of CFL's down the center hooked into a 4' power strip the the two shoplights angled in from the sides. The light from the sides really seemed to promote growth at the lower nodes...so for this year...
IMG_0650.jpg

I bought some more CFL's Mix of 100w and 75w equivalents. The 100w eq were around $10 for 4 at HD and the 75w were $3 for 6 at COSTCO!!! Also bought some splitters for the sockets and here's what the power strip looks like now...
IMG_0655.jpg

This thing feels like its giving you a sunburn from 6' away...I alternated 100/75 on each side all the way down...Instead of the mylar I am going with foil sided foam sheathing...
IMG_0660.jpg

My "plan" with this stuff is to make the Shelf unit more of a grow tent type setup. Hoping I can use the lights and a small space heater to maintain a constant temp in the mid 80s. I am also going to "try" to use magnetic tape to attach this stuff so access will be easy. We shall see. May get too warm...but easy enough to vent if need be. I am going to try to keep them indoors much longer this year. I put them out to early last year, and some of the late starts that stayed inside until the night time temps were higher passed many of my early starts that were already in the ground.

My final dilemma is the wife says 20 plants...and I have all these awesome seeds! So I am going to see if the wife's # is sort of like the over the counter dosage...the full prescription strength is double, so I am aiming for 40. I will start almost twice that # though so if you're near SD be watching this glog around plant out, I will be getting rid of some plants...

I think I will skip most all of the grocery store available varieties this year so I can grow more of the good stuff...That's if for now everybody! Hope you all have a great season!!!

Shane

Your son has gotten soo big from the video that featured him. Wow time flys. Great foodie pics for the fatty in me. Little babies are coming along nicely.
I know...like a weed that dude! I am over 6' and he'll pass me SOON! He's only in 6th grade!

Holy camoly I just finished dinner and you’ve managed to make me hungry again, great job! Excellent food/popper prep, pics and mula shot ftw! Now that you’ve trained the young jedi, you can always rent him out for parties ;)
Thanks! Dunno about renting him out??? I only hope to come home to poppers already made one day!

Seedlings looking good!
Poppers looking good!
Son looking good!

I hope you will do a TD or two Shane. The stuff you have
put up over the last yer would def be contenders!
Thanks x3 and yeah, I really wanna do a TD. but always find the dog always eats my homework on that weekend...

holy h*ll, that last picture.
Thanks brudda...btw, no good on the 50 yesterday. Had injury issues and fell behind the time cuts. Oh, well...I'll get the next one!

Looking good, Shane. I hope those seeds pop for you. I did have marginal germ rates with both. The HP22B was from Pepper Joe, and many reported marginal germ rates. The Barrackpore was from pods I got from Biscgolf. I did get plants out of both, though, so I wish you well on them. I hope I sent enough for you to get at least one plant of each. I seriously doubt it is anything you are doing wrong!
Doc, I don't think its the seed's fault. I think I may have overcooked some of the because I am having slow/no germ on many species. More to follow in a bit on that.

Hi Shane
How the babies doin'? Now that I got the heat mat dialed in, I think I'm about 5 days behind you for the superhots. Still no hooks on the Manzano Amarillos, but maybe by the end of the week....

Those poppers look outstanding Shane! You got me thinking I might have to make some this weekend.
Thanks Brian! Good to hear from you bro! Get popping!

Wow im hungry now  Everything looks good man. Seedling are moving right along. They def love their home!
Jamison! The ones that sprouted are moving really well! The germ trays...slow and steady.

OK, so my patience finally failed and I put in a couple more seeds of each of the no shows so far. I didn't restart any that had at least one germ, only the complete no-shows. I left the others cooking because every time I think I must have killed them all...another 1 or two sprout. I got a White 7 from Fernando and a Rennie from Armac (via Denniz) this morning.

About the Rennie, loved the mystery surrounding this one, so when the surprise seeds showed up from Denniz I started two seeds. Well one popped this morning and I was so stoked. I went through my normal ritual of taking it out of the germ station, removing the netting from the peat pellet and placing it into a 3.25" square pot. Well...after all that was done and I was trying to shuffle the plants around on the grow shelf I bumped the edge of the plant tray and dropped it. :tear: Soil exploded out of the pot and I had to use my head lamp and a flashlight while sifting through the soil to finally locate the little hook in the disaster area. I put it into a new pellet and back into a 3.25 pot...so hopefully the little dude will come around. Ughhh...

Really not a ton to report, but I will show a few pics of the baby's growing up...

Tray 2 (mostly ornamental and non-peppers)

here is a comeback story.
IMG_0892.jpg

This little Goat's Weed sprouted with both Coty's fried??? It was literally a stick with two crispy dead strings on top. Never had that happen before, but I had one come up with only one coty last year and it never did anything. I almost tossed it, but it wasn't in anything's way so it just sat there. Well...here it is now. true leaves coming in! Crazy!

IMG_0894.jpg

Here is a non-pepper...one of the 4 Pomegranates that have sprouted! Going to keep them potted, then a couple will go in the ground next year and a couple will be Bonsai'd.

To help boost #s I bought and hooked up a couple cheap thermostats...
IMG_0899.jpg

IMG_0900.jpg

...and added some new starts to the trays. I think more of the original starts will still sprout, but didn't want to wait too much longer before I added some. If all goes well, I will have more plants to find homes for!

Here are the #'s..red #s are changes, red+ #'s are added starts.

Hi Shane
How the babies doin'? Now that I got the heat mat dialed in, I think I'm about 5 days behind you for the superhots. Still no hooks on the Manzano Amarillos, but maybe by the end of the week....
Was typing as you posted bro-ham! Will visit your grow soon!

Your starts look great, Shane - they are bigger than mine;
most are just getting the first set of true leaves. I started
giving them 1/4 strength ferts the middle of last week, since
the seedling mix is basically sterile. The leaves are beginning
to grow out a bit.

Have a good week, my friend. How's the commute going?

Thanks man! They really are liking their new home...once they GET STARTED! I just checked the temps in the germ trays and it was 95 degrees with the thermostat set on 90. So the lights are really making it HOT! Having a hard time tuning the setup to grow/germ in there. I have already got more plants up than I set out to keep, but I really wanted a couple of other varieties to pop. I think they'll come around eventually. My pellets go straight into MG from the germ tray, so I don't have to feed. Fire and forget.

The commute between SD and LA will never be "good" but I only do it once or twice a week now. I also make the trip at 0430 on the way there, so the only really painful commutes are the trips home.

bummer about the rennies... well stil got one more seed to pop... they eventually will pop out and grow for you.. youre a good grower shane... btw i got the seeds from TEX16 via ARMAC =D see u in april

The seedlings are looking strong and healthy! Not too leggy and nice and green! Set up is doing its thing. those lights will add some heat. I guess its one of the problems of having germ and grow in the same location. But it does keep things nice and tiddy!

Chances are you will end up with double the seedlings now Shane ;) anyway better luck next round and I am sure you will be away laughing. If the lights are heating up your medium too much you would be better dialing your thermostats back 10 degrees Fahrenheit and err on the side of caution... better to be slightly cool then too hot in my experience ... may take a little longer to germ but not too much... anyway you don't need me to rabbit on you will suss it !!

Looking good Shane. If I could plant out as early as you guys,I would initially go with the 3.25" or so like you did and skip all the potting up. I am still planning on only one pot up....if I ever get off my butt. The yellow billy boy doogie wasn't from me.I don't want to steal anyones thunder! Hah Have a good week.

Shane, fire’in up dem starts, every ting looking happy mon! It doesn’t look like “you’re having a hard time” as you say, you make it look easy. Many of mine haven’t popped, couple more weeks and I’ll have to crack open dem eggs just to see what shape the seeds are in. If that’s the case, I’ll wait till summer and try the supers again. I love you’re set up approach “fire and forget,” akin to setting the speedometer and run'in on cruse control ;) BTW very nice close up shots of dem babies ...

Noticed you are growing Goat's Weed again this year. The one you had outside last year was pretty big in the barracktour and that was only June. Looks like a great pepper plant. Is that one good for munching straight off the plant? Salsa? What is it good for besides looking so cool?
Everything is looking awesome so far!

Still one of two Rennies up and doing fine, so no worries!

Thanks Britton! I'm not here to move my fan around/rotate the trays like I did last year. They're all pretty compact, but some could use a little more exercise I am working on that part. I got the temps dialed in finally. I will explain in a bit.

I hope I have that problem Tripp...but I don't think so. I am still getting the occasional pop from the original seeds but the ones I started last weekend are showing more action than the originals already. Temps are good now with the thermostats and light schedule I have finally worked out. Advise from folks that know is always welcome!

Last year I went from the 3.25s to 6" to gallon then to their final homes. I will see how it goes this year if the roots need more room and I have the space I might have to pot up two more times??? I will have to review last year's glog to figure out who those came from. Think they may have been sent by Melissa??? Silver Surfer seeds for sure though.

Everything looks awesome the seedlings are really kicking now and the food is top notch as usual just great work
Thanks Fernando! I will have to check out your stuff today!

Thanks Ramon...fire and forget is essential with my schedule. I only come home on weekends so I am not here to tinker and tweak. Hope you have more luck. I like your egg approach, never seen it before. Jiffy pellets get their share of hate from members, but they are really cheap, easy and I had great #s with them last year. If you keep having trouble I will send you Jamie's address and you can swoop in and steal some of his plants!

Jeez man them things are boomin!
Thanks Jamison, they really are growing well in there. Temps holding around 80 and plenty of light I may run out of room before plant out! We shall see. I will put them out mid-late March. If they start getting too big I will cut back on the light timers a bit to slow them down.

Nice update, some busy GLOGs for Jan!
Lol...I know. I am just trying to keep up with Paul but he already passed me like Usain Bolt in the 100! Germ/indoor is the most fun of the season for me. The big harvest are fun too, but watching those little seeds use what you give them to transform into such cool little plants amazes me.

Nice looking seedlings, Shane. Love the ornamentals already showing their dark colors.
Thanks Doc, I really enjoy the ornamentals. Next year I think I will do some that will work for both me and mama such as pimenta de neyde and if I can get ahold of some pimenta tigers. I may have to start a few more ornamentals this weekend, I have requests from some folks for some plants and they are fun and easy.

That comeback story has me hopeful as one of my seedlings has two brown strings for coytls.
That is exactly how that little goat weed started. a green stem with two brown strings on top. I also had two PI438638s that came up with helmet head in spite of soaking. I tore off most of the coty's after they were unable to shed them for a week. Both are doing just fine in spite of their coty nubs. Pout the light to it and it just might make it!

Chewi, last year was my first year growing them and I will ALWAYS have a plant or two now. They have a flavor/texture similar to a cayenne, but less sweet and more heat. VERT hot for an annuum. Huge plant with tons of pods, and the plant is stunning to look at. The leaves are light greyish green fuzzy the pods start green, then black and finally to bright red. Great for flakes (roasted or lightly smoked), fine powder or sauce. Never tried them in salsa??? Their only minor draw back is they are very seedy, but the seeds are small, and I don't mind seeds in my flakes. The seeds I used this year are from a different source so the plants may be a bit different. Some plants grow more upright, some sprawl, some have upright pods and some pendant. I hope the plants are similar to the ones from last year...

compmodder26
Your babies are looking great Shane.

Thanks Brian! Hope I can keep them that way...

Things are moving right along in the grow room, I finally have the entire top shelf running. Just started filling in the third flat of peppers and one flat of mama's flowers up there for now.

Numex Centennial starting to show some secondary growth.

IMG_0956.jpg

Explosive Ember doing the same. Easier to tell the two apart now. The Explosive Ember's leaves are much smaller and show a bit more color.

This is one of the Bhut Jolokia Indian Carbon's from [background=rgb(255, 244, 228)]Pr0digal_son...you can just barely make out some new growth at the nodes, a good sigh that they're gonna bush up nicely![/background]

Three of the noobs...Jamie's(Romy6) mystery annuum on the left, a couple popping Ajis from Paul(PaulG) in the center and on the right is a Jamaican Scotch Bonnet from Greg(Pic1) Also have a baby yellow brain that popped yesterday, still waiting for him to raise his hands. I will try to save the second Aji sprout once it gets out of its shell.

Here is how the Chinenses look top down. Lower center is one of the Yellow Billy Boy Douglahs. Its leaves are a little wonky, but its growing fine. It came up with crinkled coty's too. Dunno what's going on??? Growing fine though, probably genetic???

And here are some of the Ornamentals...they have more color in person the floro lights kind of wash it out a bit.

Group photo of my two full trays.

As I mentioned I have been trying to keep mama off my back. I started some seeds (Zinnia, Snapdragon and Columbine) along with several lily species. I picked up some gladiolus bulbs I still need to start also. I put a few bulbs in the ground but most in containers so far. So I had to figure out how to get the large containers some light...

...so I zip tied two shelf brackets to one end of the grow station upside down and to those I zip tied power strips, added some lights and a leftover piece of sheathing, and there you have it! Tucked in there are 4 contiainers with lily's in them and the black one is a potato planter I found at Wally world for my son (also trying to win him over). Pretty cool system. The inner planter has large windows cut out so you can lift it out and pull your tubers. then drop it back in. I took some more photos of it last weekend as we were planting, but can't find that memory card or even a link to one online. Most likely it is in my daughters locker at school for her photo class??? Should be fun for him.

Here are the Zinnias...planted Monday, and most were up Wednesday! I wish the peppers were that easy. They came up and grew so fast that by the time I came back home yesterday to move them under the lights they were already pretty leggy. Also have some Snapdragons up, but they are tiny in comparison.

Here is the whole setup. I have the top light running all night and the bottoms ones and lily box during the day. Keeps the temp right at 80 degrees in there. Really need to work on cord management in there. A couple more 4' power strips would be perfect, I could run them along the back of each shelf and on separate timers but Those things are pricey, so What I got here is working.

Thanks for checking in everyone! I hope your grows are going well, have a great weekend!
