stc3248, 2013 Grow log, Season's Greetings and Season's End

Well here we go again! Those that saw my grow last year know that I was plagued by virus issues and many other problems, but I was still able to pull off the most amazing grow of my life. By season's end every plant was infected. Some keeled over, but others just kept right on trucking. I learned a ton, and hope to use it to pull off a season without that virus making a repeat appearance. It will be tough. I had huge numbers of pods, and many hit the ground and rotted, so there are sure to be some infected volunteers that show up. My grow this year will be MUCH smaller and focused on the varieties I liked best along with a couple new ones I really wanna try out.

First a couple of my money shots from last year...

I plan to use a similar grow setup to start with...here are a couple pics of how it looked...
P1000224.jpg

P1000226.jpg

My setup evolved as the season began. I started with a single t8 shoplight...the two shoplights and ended up with a single row of CFL's down the center hooked into a 4' power strip the the two shoplights angled in from the sides. The light from the sides really seemed to promote growth at the lower nodes...so for this year...
IMG_0650.jpg

I bought some more CFL's Mix of 100w and 75w equivalents. The 100w eq were around $10 for 4 at HD and the 75w were $3 for 6 at COSTCO!!! Also bought some splitters for the sockets and here's what the power strip looks like now...
IMG_0655.jpg

This thing feels like its giving you a sunburn from 6' away...I alternated 100/75 on each side all the way down...Instead of the mylar I am going with foil sided foam sheathing...
IMG_0660.jpg

My "plan" with this stuff is to make the Shelf unit more of a grow tent type setup. Hoping I can use the lights and a small space heater to maintain a constant temp in the mid 80s. I am also going to "try" to use magnetic tape to attach this stuff so access will be easy. We shall see. May get too warm...but easy enough to vent if need be. I am going to try to keep them indoors much longer this year. I put them out to early last year, and some of the late starts that stayed inside until the night time temps were higher passed many of my early starts that were already in the ground.

My final dilemma is the wife says 20 plants...and I have all these awesome seeds! So I am going to see if the wife's # is sort of like the over the counter dosage...the full prescription strength is double, so I am aiming for 40. I will start almost twice that # though so if you're near SD be watching this glog around plant out, I will be getting rid of some plants...

Shane

50 miler? that is so crazy but so normal for a run nut. i have two 26.2miles plan this year with plenty of half marathon spread in between. Life's good. Chili, beer, bacon and running.
Crazy is yet to be defined I think...Good luck on your Marathons!

Holy shit man do you ever sleep? You have made a whole year grow in what 10 days

Nice to see my yellow cardi bust it's ass out .If I recall that was the most perfect pod I sent ya.Hopefully all of it's babies will be just as perfect They have some good genes . :fireball:

Gonna try any of my mystery annuums?

Oh and your passion has inspired me to start some more this weekend . Just don't tell my wife ;)
Jamie, I really don't sleep enough when I'm home. I make up for it when I'm up in the barracks though. I usually turn in by 9:30 and get up around 5:30. At home I go down around 11 and up around 3:30. Those Yellow Cardi's you sent were PERFECT! These are seeds from the most perfect pod...however the babies turn out is gonna be just fine with me! Mystery annuums aren't on the list...YET! I had one come up and it was growing like a weed last season, but it got destroyed by the pups. It was coming back and then frost got it in the end. I may start some later, we'll see.

Holy Moly, those are some tasty looking poppers! Look at the size of those monsters :D The dillo rack is just awesome, wish we had stuff like that over here  Good luck with your season!
They were freakin huge for sure! They were delicious...more to follow on the popper topic. You can order similar racks online...but I can't find the exact one I bought. Here is a link!
https://www.chilegrill.com/critters/

Glad to see some of mine made the cut. Those are all good for smoking, choco hab,and 7 pot congo get huge and will give you a lot of weight. That strain of douglah has a really nice shape, and savage heat!!!!
How could they not? Still waiting on some to pop, but I already got a pretty good assortment out there. I really like the heavy pods, so I am glad I chose those two. Can't wait to see some pods from those dudes!!!

Dude, those poppers look awesome! Gonna have to try them that way sometime.
First time I did it, and momma said that's the way they shall be from now on. Was kinda nice to have smaller portions so you didn't fill up on just a couple.

who cares about the plants, MORE POPPERS!
I shall honor that request tomorrow!

Good luck on your grow. Looking forward to seeing your pod porn!!!
You and me both buddy. First hooks, first pods...and then first color are my favorite parts of the grow!

Just stopped by to check in. Glad to hear you are loving
your grow closet! I suppose you already have the thermostat/ventilation
rigged up?
Thanks for the visit brother Paul! Not yet, temps have been good so far and I run the lights at night when temps are cool and the heater still has to come on to keep the temp in there above 70. During the day when its warmer nothing is running so it isn't an issue for now. Once I have to fire up the other shelf and lights are on in ther around the clock I will have to get the thermostat rigged up.

those poppers look beast!
Thanks Tyler! I really do love my poppers!!!

I've had a few more pop in the grow room, but many more just chillin in their pellets taking their sweet time. So since really not much to report out there...food always fills the void! In laws in town AGAIN! They love their BBQ so I did my best to hook up a couple Caver standards...
P1020808.jpg

Started with three of these...

P1020809.jpg

Turned them into six of these...

P1020810.jpg

A little butter, olive oil some sprinkles and some of my own Manzano/Yellow Bhut BBQ sauce melted in the mic to baste...

P1020811.jpg

Then took some of these....

P1020813.jpg

and made them look like this...

P1020815.jpg

a little of this...

P1020819.jpg

A lot of this...

P1020820.jpg

and they came out like this!!!

P1020821.jpg

Mmmmmmm....Had some of those brown things that grow in the ground and some green leafy stuff with ranch on it too...but I really don't remember that part too much.

and for tomorrow...
P1020812.jpg

Guess what's gonna happen to these guys...

Thanks for stopping by and all the great support. I love this site!
Shane

Really digging the grow room Shane. Looks like it will do quite nicely for you. And loving the pepper/food porn as well. Looking forward to watching your grow unfold my friend.

Wow, those chickens look amazing!!! Very creative with the poppers too! I'm like you, how can you not love something made of peppers, cheese and bacon?

It's going to be a while before we can fire up the smoker. It's pretty much frozen solid. The high today was 15, and I think the low was - 14. Can you say ridiculousness???

That kai looks awesome bro! The in-laws must be stoked coming to stay when you have the BBQ cranking!!
I crank the BBQ a lot...so hopefully they don't feel special!

Hi Shane
Nice to see you out on point with the BBQ/smoker and riding the wave of hookin' chiles. Keep on truckin'!
The hookin is slow for now   Don't know what's going on...I think the temps are a little wonky. I am not home enough to monitor. I added a couple thermostats so hopefully they get dialed in and start popping. I hope I didn't cook them. I'll give them a week with the temp controllers and if nothing starts to move I will plant a few more of the ones I really wanna get going.

Fabulous foodie, Shane!
Thanks Paul, you know I love to cook! Maybe I'll actually get off my a$$ and enter a TD or two this season.

Delicious yummmmmm
Thanks Pia! Good to see you popping in!

What the heck? This a cooking or a pepper growing thread? I can't finish reading your glog because I get too dang hungry and have to go eat something.

Good luck with the grow Shane.
Geez, the plants are small and unspectacular at this point, so I was trying to fill the void...just now getting first true leaves on a few species. I will show what I got growing for ya...

+1 Now I'm hungry again! Looks great, Shane.
I should rename it to GLOG/Appetizer!

Always love your foodie pics. It's not even breakfast time and I'm hungry now. ;)
Good to see you Doc...no movement on your seeds yet...hope that I didn't mess them up  !!

Dang Shane, glad i just ate but that's some good looking chicken. Oh and did some one say,

POPPERS!!!!!
Poppers are a Caver house staple...always make too many though.

Really digging the grow room Shane. Looks like it will do quite nicely for you. And loving the pepper/food porn as well. Looking forward to watching your grow unfold my friend.
Working very well so far, but there is a learning curve. Hopefully I get my end dialed in before they're all dead.

Nice variety beautiful images
Thanks! Speaking of variety, I see your grow has what 200+ species in it!!! Good luck, I will be peeking in on your grow soon!

'WalkGood'

Lol...hope you found some good food!

Bacon, Cheese and peppers is automatically delicious! Yuck on your weather! We've been cold by Cali standards, but I won't complain! You, Rick, Paul and all the other northern/midwest growers have my respect and sympathy!

'kiddc'
hmm, jalapenos and fresnos (did i miss anything?) both good for poppers. Ok, i will grow fresnos this year too

Fresnos are great! I have never grown my own, but they have them in stores here seasonally. A touch sweeter than a Jal with the same heat. The Santa Fe's are a touch milder and have a little less flavor. I really don't care all too much for them, but the wife likes them because they don't kick her a$$ too bad.

OK...finally the update. These pics were from Sunday, but I have been too busy to get around to posting, so here goes! Like I said above, I think my temps are too...something??? I have checked them and they've been in the mid 90's and down into the high 70's I turned on the lights on that shelf and added temp controllers to both trays to see if I can get them moving again.
IMG_0887.jpg

Here are the little ones under their lights...I had one more (PI 438638) pop after this pic and one of the Pomegranates I started popped as well...

IMG_0886.jpg

This is one of the [background=rgb(255, 244, 228)]Yellow Billy Boy Douglah (SilverSurfer via Coheed via [/background][background=rgb(255, 244, 228)]Romy6[/background][background=rgb(255, 244, 228)])...it came up with crazy cotys, but is truckin right along.[/background]

IMG_0884.jpg

This one is a Numex Centennial...its gotten a bit bigger, may snap some more shots later.

IMG_0883.jpg

Explosive Ember...hard to tell the two apart! I have a ton of each hoping to keep momma happy  !

Your son has gotten soo big from the video that featured him. Wow time flys. Great foodie pics for the fatty in me. Little babies are coming along nicely.

Holy camoly I just finished dinner and you’ve managed to make me hungry again, great job! Excellent food/popper prep, pics and mula shot ftw! Now that you’ve trained the young jedi, you can always rent him out for parties ;)

Seedlings looking good!
Poppers looking good!
Son looking good!

I hope you will do a TD or two Shane. The stuff you have
put up over the last yer would def be contenders!

Looking good, Shane. I hope those seeds pop for you. I did have marginal germ rates with both. The HP22B was from Pepper Joe, and many reported marginal germ rates. The Barrackpore was from pods I got from Biscgolf. I did get plants out of both, though, so I wish you well on them. I hope I sent enough for you to get at least one plant of each. I seriously doubt it is anything you are doing wrong!
