stc3248, 2013 Grow log, Season's Greetings and Season's End

Well here we go again! Those that saw my grow last year know that I was plagued by virus issues and many other problems, but I was still able to pull off the most amazing grow of my life. By season's end every plant was infected. Some keeled over, but others just kept right on trucking. I learned a ton, and hope to use it to pull off a season without that virus making a repeat appearance. It will be tough. I had huge numbers of pods, and many hit the ground and rotted, so there are sure to be some infected volunteers that show up. My grow this year will be MUCH smaller and focused on the varieties I liked best along with a couple new ones I really wanna try out.

First a couple of my money shots from last year...

I plan to use a similar grow setup to start with...here are a couple pics of how it looked...

My setup evolved as the season began. I started with a single t8 shoplight...the two shoplights and ended up with a single row of CFL's down the center hooked into a 4' power strip the the two shoplights angled in from the sides. The light from the sides really seemed to promote growth at the lower nodes...so for this year...

I bought some more CFL's Mix of 100w and 75w equivalents. The 100w eq were around $10 for 4 at HD and the 75w were $3 for 6 at COSTCO!!! Also bought some splitters for the sockets and here's what the power strip looks like now...

This thing feels like its giving you a sunburn from 6' away...I alternated 100/75 on each side all the way down...Instead of the mylar I am going with foil sided foam sheathing...

My "plan" with this stuff is to make the Shelf unit more of a grow tent type setup. Hoping I can use the lights and a small space heater to maintain a constant temp in the mid 80s. I am also going to "try" to use magnetic tape to attach this stuff so access will be easy. We shall see. May get too warm...but easy enough to vent if need be. I am going to try to keep them indoors much longer this year. I put them out to early last year, and some of the late starts that stayed inside until the night time temps were higher passed many of my early starts that were already in the ground.

My final dilemma is the wife says 20 plants...and I have all these awesome seeds! So I am going to see if the wife's # is sort of like the over the counter dosage...the full prescription strength is double, so I am aiming for 40. I will start almost twice that # though so if you're near SD be watching this glog around plant out, I will be getting rid of some plants...

A colorful update!
The plants are lovin mother nature. Can't beat the Natural Light for any type of plant.
What are you feeding that Goat's Weed.....what an awesome plant! The Fatalii looks like a winner, beautiful-healthy growth. The Belize plnt will be podding up soon, many flowers...many peppers. The lattice setup is sturdy and shady....good for cukes. I find the cukes tastier when grown in partial shade....less bitter.

Now I have to page back through your last few pages to see what I've missed........a few days away from here can place one in the back of the class.......lol

Hey Shane

The seeds are awesome! The powders are out-the-park fabulous! Thank you so much.

I've always enjoyed spicy. But for the last few months, I've really been pouring-the-coals to my food. It's amazing how fast I've gotten accustomed to the heat. My friend tried some of your powder on some gumbo that he'd brought over and, we had to switch bowls. It wasn't even hot to me. I added more. And, me and this guy have been cooking, hunting, and fishing together for over 30 years. He could hang with me with the heat before.

And, I'm the last person to eat something just to be Macho. Too old-n-ugly to care what others think anymore.

Not only can I "stand" it hotter, I sorta "crave" it hotter. Your seeds and your powders are gonna bring this old Cajun's cooking up-a-coupla notches!

I have some that's MUCH hotter...I'll send you some once you get through those. I don't send the mean stuff to just anybody. Those two sit on my table for dinner seasoning. I saw you were looking for some red podded varieties on another thread so I threw in what I think are some good ones. Enjoy, hope your back is feeling better!

nice neon colors..... fataliis mMMMm last year my faves... i have a few growing this year.. im amazed how everyones has taken off mine while still looks like they 4 weeks old. good job shane

Thanks everyone!!! RM...the pool is green because I LIKE GREEN! SO GET OFF MY CASE!!! HAHA Acutally it needs a new Pump/Filter and the landlord doesn't want to invest just yet.

I will get to personalized responses this weekend, but I went home yesterday and only found a couple leaves with a tiny bit of sun burn so the harden was good...and they are REALLY growing, I may even see a super pod or two in short order. I am on leave all next week!!! Stand by for heavy rolls while this ship GLOG comes about!!! Plan is to have most of plant out done and one grow shelf shut down for the season by April fools day...a few stragglers that pop WAY late and the growdown will probably need another month of artificial love but I am ready to put these bad boys on cruise control out in the mean world.

Looking great, Shane. So Cal rocks this time of year! I noted the pool color, but wasn't going to say anything.

Glad to see the Barrackpore looking so healthy. Everything, in fact, looks healthy. Funny how none of the undesired volunteers come up helmeted. Best wishes for a virus-free garden this time around. Lots of prep work, but it is going to pay off with the firey fruits of labor.

Looking at your previous update, the stalk on that Yellow BB Douglah is brutish. Keep the updates coming, bro!

My plants won't be as big as yours at the END of the growing season!!! Hard to believe my last frost date is still two months away, and your peppers are already planted out!

Okay, since everyone is raving about the flavor of the Fatalii, I gotta ask. How much hotter than a habanero is the Fatalii? It's too late to start one this season, but I have Fatalii seeds leftover from the swap, and just wondered if it was out of my league heat wise. If not, I may add it to next year's growlist.

Did the tolerance to the hot stuff happen quickly with you?

My twin sons make extra money in the evenings and on weekends cleaning pools that over-wintered similar to yours. They rent a 3-inch trash pump and have ANY pool sparkling clean and filling back up in 1 day. I did it for years and turned it over to them moons ago. It was a nice side-gig. Paid for huntin-n-fishin stuff for 4 boys and me for years. PM if you need info. Ray

Ok errybody...only got a second. Got to fire up some STEAKS. Took a short vid...you won't be able to tell, but there are several supers with little pods now!!! Pretty sure they're gonna stick, but you never can tell. Got a good string of weather in the forecast Highs at or around 70 but more importantly nights only in the low 50s which is rare here...all the way to the end of the 10 day forecast so I should start to see some production...I hope. I did get some mild sunburn on the plants...difficult to harden them when I'm only home a few days here and there. They'll be fine. If you look close you'll see some bug damage already too...comes with the territory. Enjoy, only about 3 minutes so not too painful.

I've been neglecting the forum for a little while lately. Shane your plants are looking mighty fine there bro!! I like the colourful pots to be honest. Would make a nice change from my drab black buckets ;). The best thing is the things in the pots look even better. On you grow!!
