breeding Preventing cross-pollination of hot peppers using isolation techniques

I got my bags at a nearby dollar store. Check anywhere that they sell party supplies. Walmart or Micheals might have them, too, though I didn't have to look.    If they don't have bags, they'll definitely have glue. ;) I've never tried it, but I googled around and found this...

What is digging into my potted peppers? Dirt flung out of pot, shallow holes.

I have that problem with the  :censored:  squirrels, too. I pretty much just have to cross my fingers and put up with it. I protect the plants with sawed-off 2L pop bottles while the plants are small enough. (Hey, my Diet Pepsi addiction is good for something.) Once they outgrow that, they seem...

When and why you started growing peppers

Thanks for this piece of wisdom; it makes me feel better about my slight hoarding tendencies. ;)    So, when did I start? I guess around 2007 when I lived in a house and first tried veggie gardening. The yard was too shady, though, and my container Jalapenos did the best out of everything I...

tutorial The Comprehensive Guide to Over-Wintering

Another update on my OWs. Here's a pic as of my last average frost date, May 10. It's still too cold to plant pepper seedlings outside, and here I am with lots of new growth, flowers, and a few little tiny peppers!!   Thanks again!

    DC Balcony Glog

Hi from due North. It's really neat that your seedlings look so healthy and not leggy. I've never had any luck starting seeds - light seems to be the issue. You must have really good natural sunlight.   Best o' luck!

    KayJay's Glog

Hello! I'm sorry I didn't see your reply earlier. I have a bunch of vegetables planned. Pepper-wise, besides the Jalaps and OWs, I've started sweet peppers, too. Early Cal Wonder. I'm sure I'll end up impulse-buying more once the parking lot nurseries are up and running.   The outdoor growing...

tutorial The Comprehensive Guide to Over-Wintering

Hi all. We've finally had a bit of decent weather here in Ontario after a long, crappy winter. I treated my OWs to an hour of real sunshine. ;)     So I hope I'm on the right track here: harden them off again, trim off any dead/brown leaves, fertilize them with a weak fert once it's time to get...

tutorial The Comprehensive Guide to Over-Wintering

Just a thanks for all of the advice in this thread. I brought my container Apache and Cayennettas inside back in October, and... well, they still look alive and the house has gotten as cold and dark as it's going to get. Pic in my glog. The countdown to spring begins. :)

    KayJay's Glog

I have the winter blues and it's only early January.  :tear:   Here's a shot of my Apache and Cayennetta in their winter home in my living room, window facing North-East. I guess they're doing okay - they basically look like they're frozen in time from the day I brought them in, back in October...

    Hola from Chaparral, New Mexico

Hello from the Toronto area up North. I spent a month at White Sands a number of years back, and we'd go through Chapparal to go to WalMart in El Paso. Heh heh. What a beautiful part of the country.

Hi From The 'Burbs of Toronto

Hi all. Thanks, Chuck - I was just looking into overwintering the plants indoors. That might be asking a lot in a Canadian winter, but we'll see. I won't be heartbroken if they don't survive - each seedling was two bucks, required very little care, and I already got my money's worth in peppers...

Hi From The 'Burbs of Toronto

Hi folks. I'm a newbie hot pepper grower. I'm a newbie gardener, really, having only done a bit in a shady yard a few years ago and living in apartments at other times. My fiancee and I bought a home last winter and even though our yard is tiny, I love it and I'm happy with the veggies I'm...
