The part they didn't tell me. . .

thanks for the welcome fellow Ohioan! Working on my second batch in the kitchen -- doing red carribeans (type of habanero I think) -- smell is okay, fairly pungent, not having a problem with the fumes at all -- 10 full trays in a Nesco dehydrator. So not a problem for me, the spouse of a...

drying basics of dehydrator drying? washing etc.

Hi all,  We have a large amount of habeneros and red carribeans (our first time growing hot peppers).    We found some misinformation on the internet, and strung up our peppers, then found that our environment is too humid to dry them properly by stringing. We were able to rescue most of them...

The part they didn't tell me. . .

thanks, will do that.    How bad are the fumes? I can handle smell, just don't want burning eyes. I cut many in half and refrigerated in prep for the dehydrator, fumes didn't bother my eyes from that. Dehydrator arrives tomorrow.    I did find out however, that eventually the heat will come...

The part they didn't tell me. . .

yep, crazy be good. Husband has fallen in love with the Caribbean Reds.    update: found that this method in our climate (southwest Ohio) has some molding problems. We ordered a dehydrator and rescued the majority of the peppers which are in refrigeration awaiting the dehydration process.  It...

The part they didn't tell me. . .

It started innocently enough. Husband Robin was given some homemade hot pepper flakes from a welder guy at work, "let's grow hot peppers" he said. And make hot pepper flakes. "Okay", I said. Seemed simple enough.    Now it looks like crazy people live in our house.

Sudden Leaf Drop, what is this?

Hi,    My jalapeños and habeneros seem fine, but several of my "sweet hot" plants experienced sudden and extreme leaf drop. Most of the leaves of one plant fell in a matter of several days. Anyone know what this is? I pulled the plants since I was worried about it spreading.    The peppers on...

shopping A good place to buy beneficial insects online?

I've got a bit of an aphid problem, more in the tomatoes than the peppers. . .I've got too much foliage to spray Azamax again, I'm thinking beneficial insects (like green lacewings) might be something to try, since there aren't a huge number of aphids.    Does anyone know a good place to buy...

pests Ants & aphids, when to take action

Well, here's an update if the information is helpful to anyone. . .I have 17 tomato plants, maybe 20 hot peppers of various kinds -- I was beginning an aphid infestation and had millions of ants. (Ants were there when we tilled the new soil).    I had seen one or two aphids, and they seemed to...

pests Aphids are ruining my fun.

I'm sorry to hear Justosmo!    I also have aphids, (been following your thread)  I sprayed Azamax yesterday mid day (I did have shade cloth.    Plants look good today, also tomatoes which which were not shaded. The Azamax seemed to dry very quickly, didn't see any damage on the tomatoes, so I...

pests Ants & aphids, when to take action

yep, probably gonna get some Terro tonight. I thought about making the peanut butter/boric acid mixture but didn't want raccoons/possums getting into it.

pests Ants & aphids, when to take action

yep, mine's food grade.    One thing about traps (whether boric acid or whatever else) is I think it'd be more likely to just whack the ants vs anything else wandering into DE.    At least the bees shouldn't be on the ground -- mostly it's weed fabric & there's a critter fence, so other animals...

pests Ants & aphids, when to take action

I sure hope I have aphid mummies. :)   I have a boat load of diatomaceous earth. (Battled fleas indoors a couple years ago before I gave up & called the exterminator, I was losing).  So I have plenty of that. Would it work as well as ant baits or Boric acid powder I wonder?   How would I apply...

pests Ants & aphids, when to take action

thanks all, I'm soaking in the information. . .   I haven't seen any beneficial critters attacking the aphids. More aphids this morning, they're light green so hard to see on leaves. They blend right in with the tomato foliage. I'm next to a treeline/ hedgerow, full of various weeds...

    Here comes the heat

only going to be 90 here -- is that cause for midday shade, or can the peps take it?

pests Ants & aphids, when to take action

Hi all,    I have about 30 pepper plants (habenero, jalepeno, red carribean, sweet hot) along with my tomatoes this year -- tilled new ground from lawn and noticed a lot of ants from the get go.    Now I have ants absolutely everywhere, which didn't really worry me -- but I've seen a couple of...
