seeds My seedling keep losing leaves!

Some of my seedlings also turn their bottom leaves yellow and then drop them. I suspected the soil may be too sour in pH as I mixed quite a bit of sphagnum moss because I was recycling some soil. But this is just a guess. I don't think it's too much or too little water. It might be lack of...

    Reserve your bees NOW!

I was fascinated by beekeeping as a child. Now I wonder if it is possible to keep a very small beehive in your garden. Can't find much info. No real need for them. But it's kinda cool, isn't it. Anyone know? I'm googling later. Too many bees will be a bit of a trouble of course in the middle of...

    "Leggy" plants question

Maybe it has to do with the different temperature and light ratios. A plant grown inside during winter probably will have low temperatures, as it is grown in a shed or basement, but they will have tons of light and do tons of photosynthesis. But the lower temperature makes chemical reactions not...

Jolokia Newbie Looking for Feeding Advice

Doesn't matter. If you plant them out in potting soil then that will have fertilizer in them. Then use whatever is available as long as it doesn't have some unusual NPK ratio. But people like stuff with the right label. So maybe buy tomato fertilizer. It's all the same stuff anyway.

seeds Seed starting kits with heat mats & small grow lights

I don't think you need this kind of equipment for chili seeds as they are about as fast, easy and convenient as you can wish. Germinates in 3 days with close to 100% ratio and right away you have quite big and strong seedlings which will grow very fast. For me it's not worth the money. Now a...

    seeds Germination aides

What I do is put the seeds on wet cotton and put that in a plastic bag. I put the seeds in room temperature. So like 20 degrees during the day and less during the night. Then a root will emerge after 3 days or so. I then put the seeds in potting soil on the proper depth. I have very high...

Who will be the first to grow the Naga Viper...

If you cross two hybrids, every seed will be unique. Every plant grown out of those will be unique and have unique pods. You need to clone the plant. Or you need to backcross until the plant is completely homozygous so seed will come true to plant. Or you need to inbreed two plants and cross...

harvesting I finally have something to harvest too: Jalapeno

Took some time before they became ripe. I remember taking a small one off and that one was quite bitter. I don't know how green jalapeno are supposed to taste and pods didn't all form at the same time. I know most people prefer them green. How do I know when to harvest them? So far I think it's...

The joy of plant sex (referenced)

Does anyone know what properties are dominant? I actually want to hybridize azalea/rhododendron next year. But I also grow chilis and they don't take years to mature so I am thinking about doing some of those too. I am thinking about crossing jalapeno with either or both Aji Umba Red and...

    Vincent 2011 season

I think I have those trays as well. They are so brittle. I break or snap pieces off them every time I handle them.

    flavor Tastes of Colours

I don't think the pigments that makes red peppers red have any taste to them. But it is true that the tasting experience of food is affected by colour. If you turn potatoes or rice blue with pigments, people are going to dislike the 'taste'. Or you mean you like unripe green peppers?

    Helmets on or off

Sow deeper will help, yes. If you try to pull you will risk pulling off the leaves too. I have had some success when using a knife and squeezing the sides of the seed coat while it is wet and flexible.

Massive flower drop and no pods setting

When I put one of my plants under a grow lamp, it dropped all flowers. I don't know if it is because of the warm night temperatures, the frequency being optimized for growing, not flowering, or the period of the day just changing from 11 to 16. And this was while trying to hand pollinate btw...

indoor Indoor plant's flowers falling off

The lamp is 6400K so blue-ish and for growing phase. There's a more reddish version at 2700K for flowering. That may also be the issue. Night temperature is 20 degrees. It barely cools down. I guess the lamp makes it 25 during the day or so. But I don't ever really need to go through flower...

indoor Indoor plant's flowers falling off

I counted 17 dropped flowers in a row. The plants outside showed different behavior. But they are all outside now and it seems that one of the plants inside did produce a fertilized pod.

indoor Indoor plant's flowers falling off

It could be lack of moisture. It is really dry indoors, of course. And I don't want to mist so near a light bulb. There's no fans but I am planing to buy one for the seedlings I am going to grow in the future so they will harden a bit. There's no fan or cooling in the reflector/socket. The...

indoor Indoor plant's flowers falling off

I wondered if it was fertilizer as I gave all plants some water containing tomato fertilizer. I used 2.5 ml of the liquid stuff on roughly 1 to 1.5 liters of water. But as the plants outside don't drop any flowers fertilizer doesn't seem to be the issue. It is a CFL 125w light and the plants...

indoor Indoor plant's flowers falling off

I sowed too late and I acquired a grow light for growing other plants, which are still germinating. So I figured I put two of my small chile plants under it. On one of the plant approx. 10 flowers have already dropped. The plants both developed fruit from their first few flowers. But after I...
