AJs Plantout Has Begun...

Last week or so I posted an AJs Backyard Pepper Porn for April...well, April is not over but I wanted to share how I do things...it is a pictorial of my transplant process and what I see when I plantout

The easiest, cleanest way for me to keep my potting soil year to year is just clip the plants at soil level and stack them against the fence after the first killing freeze...usually the 1st or 2nd week of December...

I have my work area set up which is two 4' X 8' sheets 3/4" plywood on saw horses...work area is in an "L"shape...I have a wheel barrow under the edge of the work area...dump the container out...soil looks pretty good and smells very fertile too...

042411a012.jpg

breaking up the soil and fishing out the "stump and roots" shows me just how happy the plants were this past year...bigger root system = bigger plant = more pods...this plant was happy...was a homegrown 7 Pot...original seedstock from Trinidad in 2007...

042411a013.jpg

I "fluff" the soil with my hands by taking handfulls and sifting them through my fingers taking the larger part of the old roots out...I consider other smaller roots from last year are just compost that has nutritional value from what it ate last year...

042411a015.jpg

oh by the way...be careful...this is what causes "C" shape cutouts of your leaves on your pepper plants...a leaf cutter bee pupae...almost ready to emerge...I highly recommend death...

bit of trivia here..only female vespids (wasp family) can sting...that's because the sting is a modified ovipositor...and only females have an ovipositor......just sayin'....

042411a016.jpg

I mix my soil a wheelbarrow at a time...gives me about seven or eight 5 gallon containers...I take 6 of the containers from last year and add about 2-3 handfulls of Vigaro 13-13-13 standard peletized vertilizer then add a 40 qt bag of good potting mix and stir it all up

Next is the actual transplanting...I require a good rootball...

042411a022.jpg

pop it in the hole and water in with about 20 ounces of my "secret" formula

042411a023.jpg

"tamp" it down a bit...she's ready...

042411a024.jpg

and this is where my 7 Pot "orchard" will grow this year...40 on drip fertigation...

I am toying with the idea of running cable from the house to the shade structure and putting shade cloth on it all...

in the mean time, here is what else I have planted out...

22 Red Savina...mostly spoken for

15 overwintered Scorpion plants...these went into 10 gallon "smart pots"...I don't know whether I will like these or not...the dang things weigh 70-90 lbs...and these poor plants have been thru hell this year...and still look like they are going to produce pretty well...

042411a028.jpg

three shots of flowers forming...some of them are already opening and I found one with pollen...

looks like I will catch up by Tuesday or Wednesday...

You realize you'll be able to build tree houses in those over wintered scorpions.

Makes me feel good that I do things very similar to you AJ, can't go wrong following the pro's I always say. Or I should say anyway. ;)

Thanks for sharing your methods season after season and best of luck to you AJ.

+1 for Patrick, it's always great to see your work. Definately know what I'm gonna do with my pots and soil at the end of the year, I've got the perfect spot for them over the winter.

Thanks for the pointers AJ and Hoppy Hoppy Easter. Lookin forward to seeing that Easter dinner on DC, can't beat asparugas.

Awesome work AJ!! Never a doubt that your plants will thrive. Makes us all jealous! Good luck this season.

Charles

Looking awesome already, AJ! Can't wait to see how things progress!

BTW, is that all that needs to be done with last years soil? I have a whole pile ATM which I had planned to use to start a compost heap with but have since decided to reuse to save costs next season. It still has a nice, rich earthy smell to it plus it is loaded with worms.... I figure it can't be all that bad! :D

very nice write up about your system AJ. But I noticed you left something out..you left us hanging..i mean you really can't do that to friends can ya? What am I talking about? WHAT IS THAT SECRET FORMULA :)

Great post lots of information keep up the good work

thanks Al...I was just in a sharing mood today...

I sure hope so Patrick...if I build two, I will invite you for a campout...

and, by the way...I don't consider myself a pro yet...give me another 15 years or so...first thing I got to do is catch up with Derek...which probably won't ever happen...

tis the reason I posted this thread LC...hoping someone would get some ideas from it...

Looks great

thanks Charles...gonna be a good year for bofus...

I'm jealous of you and your growing season. Nice work!

got a long season 68...but the issue is I lose July and August to the heat which you probably don't...you just gotta play the hand dealt you...

thanks gas...not saying it is the right way or not, just saying this is how I do it and it seems to be working for me so far...worms are good...no, worms are great...

Lots of work AJ, but well worth it. You're off to another fantastic season.

thanks SS...your season is progressing quite nicely also...

AJ,

Thank you for your informative posts! Gives Mike and I something to strive for - plants as great looking as yours.

thank you ma'am...

very nice write up about your system AJ. But I noticed you left something out..you left us hanging..i mean you really can't do that to friends can ya? What am I talking about? WHAT IS THAT SECRET FORMULA :)

wondered how long it would take someone to ask...most of the older members probably already know..my plantout watering in solution is for 4 gallons of feed, there are 3 Tbsp Liquid Karma, 4 Tbsp ProGrow, 1 Tbsp CalMag Plus...all botanicare products....

Hey gas, don't mean to step on AJ's toes, but I do the same thing with my "used soil". I use a plastic kids pool to do the mixing. I use last years soil and then add worm castings, some Alaskan humus and beginning last year some Happy Frog soil conditioner, http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CCEQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Ffoxfarmfertilizer.com%2Fproducts_soils2.html&rct=j&q=Happy%20Frog%20Soil%20Conditioner&ei=kay0Tdf0JojBtgfAoKHqDg&usg=AFQjCNGaeNwx2HARXrqMAENApbneQCVXgQ&cad=rja

I used the Happy Frog last year with one Scotch Bonnet plant. Compared to the other two SB plants it totally blew them out of the water. The plant was taller, bushier, greener and produced four to five times more pods than the other two put together. Everybody gets it this year.

Didn't see your post AJ, sorry.

AJ, I figured the secret formula had already been posted and knew it would show up again! Thanks for sharing photos and all the other info.

Has anyone put dibs on any of your TS ButchT pods yet? The new world record holder pods?

if not- DIBS

:)

I have a few of the Butch Ts growing here at the house and a rather large number growing in Mississippi that may be already spoken for...you are the first one from the forum to say I want some this year, so you get first dibs as requested...

I need to check some things out...some of the pods that Hippy showed look very similar in shape to my homegrown pods...now I am wondering if the original seed source was the same...I haven't tasted a Butch T yet but will definitely say my homegrown are the hottest thing I have ever grown...I think JayT ate one I sent him a while back...

thanks SH...don't know about the big boys though and to tell you the truth, I will be glad when plantout is over...then I can work on a new manifold for my fertigation system...the old one works but is not as "pretty" as I would like...for those that grow a lot of plants in containers (or I suppose in the ground too) this drip fertigation is the way to go...using 1 gph drippers allows you to control the water/nutrient flow down to the minute...or 1/60th gallon...8 minutes is a little over a pint...

had a pretty big storm blow through last night but as usual the heavy stuff split and went around us...we live under the white circle with black X...I have living here the past 11 years and have been watching the weather during that time...it seems that over 90% of the storms that come our way split and go around us...no damage and very little rain...and we desperately need rain...only had a little over 4" since the first of the year...

Well the wife and I should be on our way to success thanks to the great folks on here. We started using all the above this season! Thanks for the great info AJ
