Another Newbie from Central NC

Hello everyone. I stumbled into pepper growing this spring by accident. Someone gave me some free pepper plants. I have no idea what I'm doing. I'm not even sure what kind of peppers I have, but from pictures I've seen they look like basic Cayenne chili peppers. I think they are staring to develop a problem, which I will ask about in the "Growing" section.

I grew bell peppers several years ago, and they turned out nicely. But I had a problem with something eating holes in the peppers overnight. I tried all kinds of environmentally friendly mixtures to stop the problem (probably hornworms?), but nothing worked. I gave up on organic gardening, so this year I've been using Sevin spray. I hope to learn more about permaculture so I can avoid pests and diseases without relying on poisonous chemicals.
