Brain Strain Pepper Heads 2014 Grow 500 in the ground (6/11)

In 2013 I grew out 200 plus peppers many of which were super-hot peppers. This next year 2014  I am mixing it up and decided that since I have enough outside grow area and have enough room in my basement to start close to 2,500 peppers that I might as well go all out and grow it BIG.

The equipment: I have 4, 1000 watt HID MH/HPS lights, 6  double bulb T8 lights for seedlings, close to 3,000 nursery pots, seedling trays, 4x4, 6x6, 1 gallon, 3 gallon, and 5-7 gallon containers that I received all for Free from a local nursery who recycles all their plastic. I have 3 turbo fans for air control. My basement maintains 70-75 even temps with the lights.

I have 2 seedling mats one is single tray size and the other a 2x4 mat that hold 4 trays. My trays are 32 cell, 50 cell, and 128 cell so I have plenty to choose from. I started 400 plants in October that are now ready for their 2nd transplant to one gallon containers.

I transplant from the seedling tray after the 1st set of true leaves into 4x4 containers and transplant from the 4x4 after 4-6 weeks into a one gallon. Then from the one gallon they go outside or in a 5 gallon root pouch container.

I built a stadium arena style grow area in my basement to hold all the plants. This was done by building stairs that are 10 feet long x 5 high ( Cedar Planks bugs hate them) and each hold 100 seed trays or 50 plants in one gallon.

Soil: My seedling soil is a mix of  Sunshine #4, 2 huge bags perlite, 10 bags organic soil 2 cubic feet each and organic ferts, banana peels, egg shell powder, Epson salt, coffee grounds, blood and bone meal, and dolomite. My water is PHed to 6.8 and I water as needed with Alaskan Fish ferts. I spray for bugs 2 times per week using Neem oil, Pepper oil, soap, garlic and water.  I had aphids from OW and added 1,500 ladybugs and no more aphids. I still will spray as needed to make sure no pests.

My seed list will be updated as more seed varieties are added. This is an ongoing list and will be updated as seedlings get transplanted and more seeds are added for germination. I am beginning with 10 of each strain. (Except the C. Reaper I have 100 growing 6 weeks old) I usually put 2-4 seeds per cell with the understanding that I will thin out the weak seedlings.

So far that has not happened I kept all that lived. LOL it’s hard for me to throw out a seedling that took 2-4 weeks to hook and another 2 weeks before transplanting so I will probably end up with 2 times more then I planned for but either way I am going BIG. I have my reasons for growing so many plants, none of which have to do with me making new money. More on that later as this Glog is for Growing.  The starting lists is min10 or more seeds times 138 Varieties and climbing: Starting 1,380 plus (Pictures to be added shortly and then weekly)

Your a couple days late but we'll cut you some slack if you have some good pics to share.

You are so RIGHT I am behind on pictures and here is why. I OW some pepper plants for a friend at work and his freaking plants had hidden APHIDS. His pepper plants contaminated my entire crop.  They are root aphids so washing and chemicals just get rid of the ones you can see and the next day they start all over again. I couldn’t stop aphids on 400 plants it was crazy. They got so out of control that they were now living on top of the leaves as well as under. No room under the leaves for all of them as it seemed they multiplied 10x a day!

I have used everything in my arsenal, soap, neem oil, 4 kinds of commercial sprays, yellow sticky, foil, organic sprays, pyrethrum bombs 4 times, soapy garlic water I have tried it all every 2 days. They go away for 2 days and then they hit back hard!! So yesterday I took all my plants outside and freaking killed all of them. A real big pile of dead pepper plants did not make me want to take more pictures.

However I am growing big this year and I can’t put out until the end of May because I live in zone 4 so it set me back 6 weeks but I still have 4-5 months for them to grow.  Am now replanting everything freaking plant all over again after washing and disinfecting my entire grow room I am now ready to start. So yes it was bad but I learned that it is not worth OW plants. I now have plenty of seeds, made up new soil, washed all my trays in bleach water and I am going full out Saturday with pictures (or it didn’t happen) and will be back on track.

Sorry guys but I will be back on track Saturday.

Wow, I would be heartbroken. That might be enough for me to hang it up so good for you jumping back in. I felt bad I decapitated one of my seedlings this morning trying to remove its helmet. Puts it all in perspective.

It's all part of growing. I have to take the bad with the good. I still have 4-5 months to grow so I am still in the game and will never give up. Now it's just made me more determined to even plant MORE. I am going full BORE Saturday I an't holding back and am planting all I can!!!

Yes I was disappointed but it made me madder to keep looking at those freaking bugs on my leaves every day. This way I am starting FRESH again and will do more to prevent so this doesn’t happen again. Unfortunately you have to OW to get the full effect and makes you either want to keep OW or say it’s not worth it. For me never again will I OW a plant.

That's great! :) wow...ALL YOU CAN!? This is gonna be so interesting! You're gonna have a MASSIVE harvest! Sauces? Powders? You're gonna have a busy season, but this is going to be cool, goodluck :)

I am giving most away on here. I love peppers, but love growing them more and sharing even more so my grow is really a give away. I have a good profession so I really don't grow for "New Money" I grow to grow.

Wow,that's real nice of you,its cool knowing there are a lot of people on thp that share.
Lourens also sent me some dried pods for my birthday, still waiting for them, but man oh man,I can't wait :)
oh,and what are aphids? Never knew what they were so yea..

Wow, sorry to hear that BSPH. Aphids truly suck.

I'm sure you will come back stringer than ever. Good luck.

You should consider having some lady bugs on hand once it warms up enough to ship them.

You're a trooper, BSPH.  Good on ya for redoubling your effort.

OWs are a mixed blessing indeed.  I keep mine in the greenhouse
rather than in my garage.  Even then, it's constant vigilance to keep
the little suckers from getting a foothold.  I cut off lots of branch tips.
If the OWs didn't produce so crazy, I wouldn't bother, either.

Best of luck going forward, my friend!

Sorry to hear you had to go on a killing spree. Even sorry for all the soil you must have lost! Must have been a small fortune with 400..

I only lost $100 worth of soil but it would not do any good to keep the soil because Root Aphids do just like them name implies they live in and around the roots. I could have pulled every plant, washed the roots and then potted again but if one stinking egg or aphis lived then I would be right back to square one again. Not worth it to me I would rather have found out now instead of 4 months from now when it would be too late to start over.

Damn dude that sucks to hear, but I'm glad that you aren't intimidated by the setback! I look forward to seeing you start up again.
