Devv's 2015 - 16, Life is good!

Well here we go again!

I just got finished planting seeds for 70 plants. Scaling back a bit this year; last year was a lot of work! That and I have to do more than garden this season ;)

My apologies as I can't remember shit where I got all the seeds from. Some were harvested from pods some I saved, and some were sent to me. I can say this 99% originated from the most generous THP members!

I leaned more towards peppers my wife can eat. After all she helped me quite a bit, I might as well grow some for her ;)

Last season was a challenge regarding what was what. I eventually figured them out, but was not happy with the confusion. And yeah, I'm easily confused.

Here's a pic of the 70 starters:

1.jpg

Trying something different, the Jiffy's are numbered and will be entered into a spreadsheet. As they pop, they will go into the solo cups with permanent marker to label them.

This year I'm starting things in the converted hunting room (man cave?). LB wanted the extra bedroom back ;)  The room is part of the shop; 24x8 and insulated. It's been rather nasty for the last 4 or 5 days, damp and temps below 52°, but it was 68° in there a few minutes ago. Also I'm trying a heating mat to help with germination, which was abysmal IMHO last year.

Anyone who knows how I fly, knows I like to grow in the dirt. I have a few in containers from last season, but they just don't do as well.

I put a ton (literally) of work into the soil since the start of last season.

I feel soil preparation is the key to success:

1214.jpg

1216.jpg

I tilled in over 24 yards of RCW and 10 yards of shredded leaves after pulling the plants in the fall.

2.jpg

I then planted Crimson Clover and Rye as a cover crop, this pic is from 2 weeks ago..

3.jpg

The area I planted the cover crop in is 2,300 to 2,500 square feet. Half is framed for sunshade. A must in the 100% summer sun the garden gets. There's some Comfrey of the left ;)

4.jpg

5.jpg

Dec. 6th I tilled in the whole shootin' match. I waited too long. But I do like it when it darkens up. This is what it looks like after 2 2" deep passes. If you wait too long the roots form a sod, this makes for a bad day of tilling. I got this far and decided to call it. Shiner time!

Once I'm sure most is dead and wont come back when I water crop 2 goes in.

6.jpg

On 12-10

The grass on top has dried, and rain is forecast through Sunday (yeah right), so I tilled again. It brought up the grass from below and now the garden looks like last Sunday. I went a couple of notches deeper this time to break up more of the roots. I spread rye seed and watered for 45 minutes. It should come up quickly as the weather is warm for a week or more. 50's-70's.

7.jpg

This is the garden today, the second cover crop is just coming up. And I have to prep an area for onions, which hit the dirt January 15th. The rest gets tilled in at the end of the month.

I fly out of here tomorrow afternoon, and won't be back until a week from now. So I'd like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Merry Christmas!

Hopefully the rain will wash away those pesky rats .... good to read you have pods setting

;) I hope so! And thanks!

Took a few pics, had to move fast, the dang horse flies are biting.

This is supposed to be a Billy Biker, not! It sure looks like a Jimmy Nardello to me. regardless, it will be eaten ;)  I'm really curious as to how it will taste. This is one of the fall crop plants.

NagaBrain F4 branching out and flowering. I'm still sorting out the new camera. Sorry for the blur on the close ups.

Hey this one came out clear. JA Hab ready to set pods.

MoA flowering.

Group shot of the potted plants, right around 32"s tall, and plenty of time to grow this late season. To give you an idea of how much time we have left here, the cukes go in this week for a fall harvest, usually a 8-25 planting date.

214.jpg

Tepin/lemon drop has a few pods, this is a fall plant.

215.jpg

A few pods and many flowers on the OW large Cayenne, this one has become a favorite. It's great to cook with for dishes that you want to add some heat the family can handle, the flavor is great. AND, it doesn't kill you with a million small pods, like a regular cayenne, which LB told me to NEVER plant again...LOL

217.jpg

Kept out of the full sun until it cools, a Red Manzano. I have 3, but this ones doing a little something. Really a challenge to grow the pubes here. The bugs seem to like it :shh:

216.jpg

Our very first Avocado. We've been trying forever to get one to sprout. And we have another that just came up. They're cold sensitive, so I guess we'll figure it out.

That's 10 ;)

Looking good, Scott. You've got a lot of rain. Yeah, pools are a pain. I used to have a swimming pool business. Cleaning and repair. I said I would never have a pool or hot tub. I still don't have one. I kinda wish I had a hot tub in the Winter. It's really nice when it's 20 out. Congrats on the Avocado.

Good luck with the Manzano. I hope that mine set a few more pods so they have time to ripen.
 Thanks!

Is yours in a pot? If so you can keep it going all winter.

Here I can grow them all winter, it's our summers they hate...LOL

Hi Chuck,

Crazy rain here, but we did OK ;)

I'm ready to poke a small hole in the side of it :shh:

Cool! If your Chinense chiles are flowering now, you should see ripe pods by Christmas. What a present that'll be!  Think you'll avoid cold snaps until then?

Yeah it is ;) I'm hoping to avoid cold weather, but one never knows. I've seen freezes in October, and some years none. But that's why I have a few in pots, that I can put in the shop if the weather gets rough. Hoping that doesn't happen until January!

I do have 2 of them in 15 gallon fabric root pouch containers. I have been hesitant to OW due to reading about peoples aphid issues.
I never see aphids until about now, in fact before I came in I blasted 2 side by side plants with water. I really haven't an aphid issue keeping plants over the winter. Here when it gets cold I just put them in the shop/garage it has a south window and we don't get the cold you do.
I got some more pepper love today! RandyP sent me these jewels:

What a monster pod!

Thanks again Randy!

Well it seems so far, I'm doing a lot better via the USPS this season this year...LOL

But I'm really looking forward to a harvest this fall ;)

I hope the rat's are not going to be a problem again. LB said a Hibiscus was eaten down yesterday on the pool deck. I set 3 traps yesterday evening, and caught two more rats today. I love rural living, they need to go!

But I have a plan :shh:

i got chipmunks ! got 22 so far with my trap

Great looking pod's. Justin is very kind. His pod's are top notch.

I use some flour tortilla for bate. I tear a piece off and get it doughy with water again. Bait it and let it dry. It turns hard. They have to bite it to get it off. The peanut butter works, but sometimes they would lick it all off or ants would come. I got a mouse the other day from a trap I set a year ago with tortilla.

Now that idea I like! And I agree the peanut butter is ant bait/lick off bait. I bought more rata traps today. I will keep them baited!

Wendy's Red Manzano, seeds from Mexico, I love the fuzz ;)  I feel bad, I put  Wendy on a Reaper this week, and it tore her up. I thought she ate heat all the time. She did say the Red Manzano was just as hot...I don't think so. She said she likes the heat, but with food. We do have a bit of a communication issue as her native language is Spanish. I need to give her a hug, but with LB there so no one gets any crazy ideas. What's this world coming to?

224.jpg

A good guy/gal although a bit fuzzy, I guess it depends on how much you had to drink tonight. Looks good from my house..LOL

225.jpg

White Jelly Bean Hab poddage :P  Gonna hit it with some BT in the morning to kill the friggin worms.

MoA pods!

White Bhut flowers, a super nice pod, they will surely set with the nice weather we're finally seeing.

229.jpg

Tepin/Lemon cross. Yeah baby!

I'm stoked, it's been a sad season for me so far. Hopefully redemption is in the wings :P

Bhut, I have to say.... it's been really nice to have had this season supplemented by the really great people here that frequent the THP! Thank you all! :onfire:

A little bit of a pull, LB scarfed the Jals for poppers. I think I've created a pepper head ;)

Scott your plants are getting ready to take over when us northerners are closing up.
Hi Randy,

I hope they do something   The weather has been good the last 2 weeks for setting pods, and I have a few set. But nothing like you guys do up North. I'm amazed at the pod density you guys get per plant. Come spring, I hope to have a few ready and willing, unlike this season   The plan is less, better quality plants, resulting in larger ones at dirt day. I think I'll buy the next size up from the 1# pots I've been using, as they're too root bound come dirt day when I have plants I'm happy with. I'm also wondering if I should manage the height while indoors? I guess I'll try some with and without "adjustments" ;) Tomatoes I have down. Peppers have been hard in this climate, as perfect timing is needed.

Looking good brother. Tepin lemons look great. I didn't grow them this year. Wish I had. Great cooking pepper. I have a lot of varieties I wish I would have planted. I'm making my list as we speak. Just got some more seeds in from over seas.

Thanks Chuck,

On my list are the Gochu's from Rick. LB likes the heat range and flavor for cooking once dried and powdered. We're also both fans of the MoA pods. Great to use mixed with BBQ sauce and honey to put on ribs and wings. I'm looking forward to trying the tepin/lemon's, last year I couldn't eat hot stuff and now I can

Scott,  I saw the reference to a new camera but missed what kind.  Pics are nice, what are you using now?

I gave my daughter my 13 year old Cannon D60 and bought a Nikon D3300, just 20% of the cost of the Cannon, with many improvements (hopefully) ;)

Today I finished another hugel type bed, dug 8-10"s down, 20"s wide and filled level with shredded mulch. Dang it's been humid this late summer with all the rain. Yesterday the sunshades were taken off.

As you can see it's rather bright out there.

A few small pods.

BT powder on the leaves. Since the 10" rain we're seeing thousands, maybe millions of moths or butterflies, all heading Northeast. Added more BT late today, as they're mas hungry

I know that for most these would be spring time pics, I was robbed of spring peppers. So fall is what I have ;)

They will get color, just how many?
