Grass to growbed. What should be done?

I like the idea of covering the area with cardboard/newspaper then mulch - that 'should' kill off anything that's underneath. Alternatively cover the area with weed fabric and poke holes through for your plants.
 
Newspaper on roll from local newspaper and compost from the city. This is what I did...

ScubaSteve, any progress on your project? I too just moved and am starting from scratch at my new home in suburbia. I'm completely a noob when it comes to composting. I like your idea of a border or fenceline pepper garden. Best of luck this year.
 
You mentioned growing in Wally bags...how does that work. I may give it a go this year while I prepare/amend beds.
