I just got my hands on some 400 watt hps lights for free that work.
Was wondering how far from the plants should they be?
The reason I ask is I have been growing my peppers under flo lights,
and a couple are startin to produce flowers. Any info will help.

Well hopefully you got the ballasts and wires to go with them otherwise they aren't much good

ok like i said they work. I am a plumber and my friend (electrician) gave them to me. Now how far from the plants should the light be.

9 - 12 is usually good, make sure to adjust if you notice any burning of leaves. Those suckers can get hot!

Turn your hand palm down. Hold it under the lamp. If the top of your hand feels warm, raise the lamp.

I would also look at the room temp. If you have it in an enclosed area with no circulation your going to cook the plants. If it's in an open door with a fan blowing in I would still make sure to water them often as the temps could easily get 90+ after a few minutes.

I found some cool tubes and used a good 400cfm fan and was able to get my 1000 watt HPS bulb within 10" of the plants. The draw back is I had to move the tube up every other week because they grew too fast.
