HAJ's hajj to chili

Guess it is about time I make a GLOG...
I'm living in cold Denmark, which means that everything is indoors, either in the greenhouse (spring and summer only) or in the south facing windows in the house. This again means that everything is in pots, and most in too small pots (that is also a consequence of growing more plants than I have room for).

This is the list of plants that I currently have:
Updates 2013-08-13 in red

Annum:
- Filius Blue
- Peruvian Purple
- Hungarian Hot Wax * 2
- Some Cayenne type of uncertain origin * 2

Bacatum:
- Aji Lemon Drop (4th season)
- Aji Benito
- Blondie * 2
- Criolla Sella

Chinense:
- Chocolate Habanero (2nd season)
- GRIF 9293 (2nd season)
- Some Bhut Jolokia like chili of uncertain origin (2nd season)
- Some big orange chinense of uncertain origin * 2
- Fatali White (almost as yellow as the Lemon Drop)
- Pimenta da Neyde
- Cheiro do Norte * 2
- Not CGN 21500
- Trinidad Perfume
- Bonda ma Jaques

Frutescens:
- Kaantari Mulaku (a tiny landrace from Kerala, India). This one doesn't like Danish climate. But it's mrs. HAJ's favourite...
- Some landrace from Changanacheri, Kerala, India. Turns white then red like Tabasco, but is more round. Locals just call it "chili" !

Homemade crosses:
- HAJ12D F1 and F2, Chocolate Habanero X GRIF 9293 (Chinense). Hoping to get a chili with some of the taste of the Chocolate Habanero, but with less heat.
- HAJ13A F1, Aji Lemon Drop(Baccatum) X Chocolate Habanero(Chinense). Mostly for the fun of it. But if I can get a chili that is cold tolerant like Baccatum and has brown chilies, then I'll be happy.
- HAJ13B F1, Aji Benito X Blondie (Baccatum). Hope to get a big rounded pod in cream white color.
- HAJ13C F1, <some orange chinense> X Trinidad Perfume

Pests:
- White Fly
- Aphids
- Spider mites
- you name it, I got it ...

A big thank you for all the fantastic info. and GLOG's on this site, and special thanx to POTAWIE, Spicegeist and gasificada for inspiration on making crosses.

That's all for now. Thanx for looking

Great pictures HAJ! You have a real nice selection of peppers there! Good to see real pepperheads in Europe.:-) Keep posting pics and updates, and good luck with your season!

Nice that you started your glog :) That's a very glossy pod the HAJ12D F1, what about the taste so far? Does it taste like the Choc Hab?

The pod itself (without placenta) is mild and not much taste, like the GRIF 9293. The placenta however is very hot, probably same level as the Chocolate Habanero, but the taste is more like other red chinense varieties. I'm speculating that maybe the color and taste is linked (same gene or something). Will have to wait and see with the F2s. Have 2 F2 hooks :)

A small new update.

Second cross this year havested: Aji Benito X Blondie = code named HAJ13B until I get to something a bit stable. Sorry no pictures

Ok, high time for an update

Have been visiting the in-laws in India. So this update is a bit about what you can find in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India.

First pictures are of my wife's favourite chili, Kaantari Mulaku, more or less growing wild in the coconut grove

Well, surprise weather is over. We have temperature of around 15c, lots of wind and overcast, i.e. typical Danish summer weather ...

On to something hotter:

My 4th cross, <some yellow/orange chinenese> X Trinidad Perfume, almost ready for harvest.

3rd cross, HAJ13B F1, Aji Benito X Blondie, putting out their first real leaves

2nd cross, HAJ13A F1, Aji Lemon Drop X Chocolate Habanero, first flower, followed by flower of mother and father plants

IMG_2628_zps66c36302.jpg

and do we have thr first pod ?!?
IMG_2630_zps5b1a987b.jpg

My first cross is also doing fine. Now have 12 F2 plants growing. Hoping to get a good candidate for F3. Will document results here.

Have also been trying to make a cross with my Pimenta de Neyde, but no luck this far ... any tricks with this one that I'm missing ???
IMG_2637_zps41acc74b.jpg

And then for an unexpected cross. My CGN21500 turned red with no shadows. Plant size and pod shape seems correct. Maybe I should try growing a few F2s of this one ?!!
20130802_163710_zps414db3bd.jpg

A finally the bonus picture of this update. I took seeds from one of my dahlias, Park Princess, to see if I could get lucky. This is the best flower from the bunch
IMG_2620_zps966184d9.jpg

That's all folks. Hope you enjoyed the show.

As time pass by. Almost a month that is. An incredible amount of whiteflies are taking the energy from my plants and some of the fun out of chili growing ...

Anyway, show must go on. Still havesting, and crosses are coming along.

HAJ12D: 12 F2 plants growing and first flower opened up today. Plenty of pollen. Should be able to taste this one this year !
IMG_2672_zpsaa8ddfe1.jpg

HAJ13A F1: Pods are now full size. Patience is a virtue  :(
IMG_2669_zpsd76502fd.jpg

HAJ13B F1: Growing nicely. Still no forking in sight. Hope I'll get a ripe pod this year.

HAJ13C F1: Not that big yet...
IMG_2668_zpsb834621b.jpg

HAJ13D: After 30+ attempts, finally got a pollination with Pimenta de Neyde to take  (keeping the name of mama to myself for now)
IMG_2671_zpsf3280f98.jpg

or was there some stray pollen ... pls. let it work

Time to do some powder again. Chocolate Hab., some yellow/orange chinense and Pimenta de Neyde

That's all for now. Thanx for looking

Composing and making crosses is very interesting. I am looking forward to seeing the pods on the "Aji Lemon Drop X Chocolate Habanero" cross and the "Aji Benito X Blondie" cross.

Fully agree. Only just started here with my very first F2s.

The pod shape of Aji Lemon Drop X Chocolate Habanero should be final now. More pictures when they are ripe. I expect the colour of the F1 to be red, as not-brown is dominant over brown, and red (from Choc. Hab.) is dominant over yellow. The fun should begin with the F2's. If the seeds are viable ...

IMG_2686_zps31614828.jpg

No visible oil inside. Heat fairly average between the parents. Lets say a 100,000+
IMG_2688_zps98b6ec8e.jpg

6 seeds total of which 5 look viable
IMG_2690_zps8047246b.jpg

And almost forgot the family picture (which is taken after cutting the pod open)
IMG_2693_zpsdcf62df7.jpg

Do not plan to sow the seeds until Dec/Jan, as we have passed equinox, and it will soon be cold, dark and gloomy. But I will have to keep the F1 plant going for some time to get a decent supply of F2 seeds.

Todays bonus picture is not my own, so I will not post it here. However, I have a deep link to it on FB. It should work if you are logged in ...

It is the new "toy" of my employer (hint: it is hidding behind the little mermaid)

Thanx for looking. Goodnight.

Very nice!
Red, Shorter than lemon drop and more folded as a habanero is. Looks like you are doing it right!
Are there more pods on the way? 5 seeds aren't much to work with :/
F2 is in sight :)

Great idea for a cross, especially since there are no brown ripening baccatums. I have made a similar cross this year, Criolla Sella x Georgia Black. Really looking forward to seeing your growout of the F2's...

Sounds like a great cross too.

I thought about the no brown bacatums too, but never thought about trying to make one ;)

I think the Georgia Black, Aji Panca, Brown Egg are all quite different from a lot of the "normal" chinenses as say a habanero. They are much more hairy. At least the ones i have grown and seen are.

If you have a picture of your F1 i'd like to see it.
