hourly timers, not daily timers

Does anyone know of, or can link a timer that can do 18 hours of light and 12 hours of dark, ignoring the normal 24 hour day period?

I have a theory, but all timers I find will only work on a 24 hour cycle.

BTW: I am talking about power outlet timers, not watering timers which I have seen some that I could make this happen with but would not help with lighting.

If I would have to do this manually, I wouldn't be able to keep up.

I don't want to give away the details of my theory [yet], just need a special timer for the lights.

+ is 'ON', - is 'OFF'

Sun 18+, 6-
Mon 6-, 18+
Tue 12-, 12+
Wed 6+, 12-, 6+
Thu 12+, 12-
Fri 18+, 6-
Sat 6-, 18+

Then, the following Sun 12-,12+

So, I do not believe 7-day timer will work.

yea i figured as much. but its the only real option he has. if you want somthing that plugs into a wall outlet, you have to go with regular household timers.

going to have to re adjust the timer every week.

the real solution would be any number of cyclic timers.

ive got a number of these omron units that do this sort of thing... but they are panel timers. you need to wire them to a real relay also if you need to switch a large load.

the internal realays are small PCB units... like 3 amps or some small current. require 12-24 dc also.

AHHHH great ideas!!!

That is the type of thinking that makes computer science people stand out. Weird analogy, to some, but computer science guys love these types of pattern manipulations.

This is at least something I can work with.

Thanks!

edit: going to see if I can go against millions of years of 24 hour photo-periodic conditioning (photo-periodic being the hint to my theory, not worth guessing if you don't already know). Who is to say I can't?! The sun has never tried it before, that I know of :) (nothing that I can find online either)

you will need a weekly timer to do this.

its a strange request btw.

monday 18 on 6 off, then tuesday 6off 18on , wednesday 12 off 12 on, thursday 4 on...

ETC ETC ETC ETC TET TETC ETC

Thank you, I will look into this. I almost had to start thinking back to my Python and C classes!

You can do it with an Arduino platform allowing to create interactive electronic objects.

this one is a seconds timer but changing the code will do what you want

Oh man, that is great too! It led me to this also, that company has a few cool gadgets. I have to say that I do love gadgets.

Look up a WEMO. They are a bit pricey full price but I have found some on sale (well.. my fiance works at Best Buy and gets them cheaper).

What I love about them is you can program them from your phone and operate them manually any time you like. I can turn my lights on from work if I want. I use it in conjunction with an App called "If This Then That" or IFTT.

Anyhow, it is another option if you are looking for something extremely flexible and adjustable remotely.

I have mine set up with a power strip plugged in (so all the lights and fans are controlled by one WEMO), and it comes on at 8 am and operates for 12 hours. The APP also lets you set up conditions like weather and sun cycles.

I have one set up to operate accent lights. The are turned on once the sun goes down and then turned back off at sunrise. so the lights are always adjusting when the come on and off. You can also use it for watering. The App can track weather data so you can not water if it is raining. Pretty cool stuff.
