Thanks, I'll finish the fence after planting.  No use having a fence around nothing, so did the parts toward the road, gate and back in a few weeks.  Maybe someday some raised beds in there or something to fix the soil.

Wish i was so fortunate, I have no topsoil on my property, only yellow sticky nasty clay.  For now the holes with mix work.  I really don't know if I want to put too much effort into this as hoping to not be in this house in 5 or 10 years, too much to take care of here.  The other yardwork is a good 6+ hours a week, + all the other maintenance projects and aging things.

Skunks I don't need.  Of all thet pests possible I suppose thats the one thing I have never seen at my house and I really don't know why.  I live on the edge of a pretty big patch of woods.  I have had every other wild animal Illinois has to offer in my yard at one point or another, sometimes over 20 deer at one time, but no skunks.  Pretty sure the small holes were from the squirrels, they sure like to dig in peat mix.  I'll probably have some walnut trees sprout up next to a pepper this year, which sucks as they are toxic and already have ruined the back edge of my property from ever growing peppers.  Last year coons attacked and tore plants out of the ground the night after planting and tipped over half my pots.  Its a never ending battle.

I have lived here 9 years now, and the war against the natives has never stopped.  I don't think I am winning overall but have the upper hand on a few fronts.  The chipmunk numbers are greatly reduced, but still not gone.  But the moles keep coming in from the park behind me.  I need to do some grub control probably but yard is so damn big don't want to spend the money on it.  Squirrels and raccoons are everywhere.   I have a Ruger pellet rifle that will stop them all.   Don't use it often, pretty loud and looks like a real rifle from a distance as its so big and has a big scope on it.  Have had the police called on me once by people in the park.

And yeah the clay, doing what I can.  I figure some time if I can keep the same spot now inside the fence withing a few years of digging holes should have enough mix and peat in there to think about ammending and tilling, that is if I don't do raised beds.  Hard to commit to either when plan is to be moved in 5 or 10 years to a smaller house.
Hey Justin

How big of a hole do you dig, when transplanting into the clay? Wondering how much mix to add? I have the same problem.

Hope the plants are doing well.

Last few seasons I used post hole diggers and dug a hole about 12 to 18" deep and filled with mix of peat, topsoil, composted manure.  They did great.  This year since I moved spots and had even more holes to dig, I just went with your standard round point shovel and dug a hole of similar size but probably only 9 to 12 inches deep.  Seems to hold about 2 to 3 scoops of mix.  Hoping its enough, I think it should be.  Now if I can just win the battle with the critters and heat.

Looking good my friend !  Gonna be one HOT SUMMMER for you !

Well, spring sure is hot all the sudden and too hot for some of my smaller not hardened enough plants.  I have lost some already since I planted in high 60s low 70s last week and then it shoots straight to upper 80s with no clouds in sight for 4 days now.   Combine that with the onslaught by the racoons digging around all my plants I guess thinking the organic fertilizer and/or bonemeal I use is something for them to eat.   Its been tough, but should have something to show for it I hope but been a frustrating start so far and now still have more to plant and all I see is high 80s for the coming days and storms, so just not matching up well with the weather at all this year.  I need to check out yours see how things are going, I just have had so little time, haven't had a chance to browse much.

maybe put a bucket of dogfood with some chicken wire over the top on the other side the property. Just big enough for filthy lil coon hands to reach in but not pig out. Though that may just attract more at least it would be a diversion?

Thanks Justin,

That gives me hope. Your plants kicked a$$ last year. Hope mine are half as good as yours.
Yeah, I attribute part of mine last year was due to the weather.  It seemed too wet, but maybe it wasn't so bad after all.  We had about 20 inches of rain in June and first part of July, then went bone dry for over a month.   I hope my holes are deep enough this year, I always thought that having that mix go down 12 to 18" gave roots plenty of space to grow down and also allowed for some good drainage.  It did work great last 2 years.  Before doing this I felt like I had no hope to grow anything in the ground here without building raised beds, which I still want to do eventually.

I think I posted my mix somewhere before, but if interested here is exactly what my formula has been for the in ground stuff.
1.5 cu ft compressed bail peat moss (i cut a 3 foot and half and use half per batch)
2 x .75 cu ft bags of top soil
2 x .75 cu ft bags of composted manure
about 2 to 4 cups of pelletized lime
about 2 to 4 cups of pelletized gypsum
that was the base, mix the top soil and composted manure i would get from a midwestern big box hardware store we have here called Menard's and its cheap but one of the best quality ones I have found

when i plant out i normally roughly 1 tablespoon of an organic fertilizer for tomatoes, jobes did very well last year, 1 tablespoon of bonemeal and 1 to 2 tablespoons of gypsum again.

not sure how i came up with those, but its simple and from my results last 2 seasons i cannot come up with a reason to change.   not sure if all will work in your environment, but i wish you good luck and hope you can have a stellar season

Way ahead of you on that, and have other things in the works.  I had 0 damage last night so hopefully making some progress.

Thanks, I was going to ask, but didn't want to bother you. I'm going to plant this weekend. Your mix is close to mine. I think it will work just fine.

Glad to hear no damage to the plant's last night. I've been a bit worried. I use organics with bone meal.

Coons!

They hammered me this spring. Out of about 60 plants 15-20 made it.  In fact we had a critter invasion. I bought Dog proof traps, a live trap, and rat traps, I keep them baited still.

And yes, the bone meal, I have some and it's in the garden shed. I held off after reading it attracted critters. I'll use it, but way (a month or so) before I plant next season.

I hope they leave you be and you have a great season ;)

Peach Bhuts, where they growing by cayenne by any chance? Interesting pods they are developing. Always seems the plants that start out the best turn out to be accidental crosses. Plants going to be loaded with pods

How's the new garden area doing? We're going to need some pics soon.

Hope all is well.
Things are dong better.  Just been so busy haven't had time or energy to post much.  But snapped a few crude pics tonight for you.

Annuums and baccatums here and a few chinense spares that look pretty poor.  Starting to go pretty good finally, gotta get some weeds out of the raised part.
IMG_20160614_194214468_zpsfbyxkdt6.jpg

This one is all sueprhots, lot of BBG7, various reapers, brain strains, peach bhuts and jonahs.  Some of my favorites.  Wanted to put them in some know good ground.  Next year have to plant grass in this spot.   Few in buckets that I can move around as needed.  Most are starting to go pretty good, with a few runts that were beat down by some early bad weather but look like they might survive.
IMG_20160614_194106925_zps7p3dxyk9.jpg

This is the Trident patch.  Majority of these are bonnets and the like.  My 3 pubescens are here and a few other habenero types.  All of these are looking pretty good now even though a few were uprooted by raccoons early in their lives.
IMG_20160614_194130095_zpsinpmbbjt.jpg

Here is the main patch and hopefully all of the future chinense varieties will be inside this fence.  There is a lot of peppers in here.  A few weeks back, looked not so good, the heat seems to be taking its toll on them.   I did loose a few to weather, a few to a rabbit, but now most are doing pretty well.  I lost a few that were in a very wet spot that I removed the plastic from and now its dry as a bone.  I have a about 4 or 5 that might not make it, but many are looking strong and really starting to take off.  Now to see if they will start setting pods.  Heat here is pretty bad for early June.

Heres my 2 yellow nagabrains that I feared were toast.  The leaves wilted, they dropped, they fell completely off.  The ground in this spot was extremely wet even though we have had very little rain.  I took off some of the plastic, it has dried out, and they look like they are going to give it a go.  Some new shoots and leaves are forming leaving me some hope.

Looks great Justin. Very inspiring grow. Between everyday life and the garden, your not kidding on the lack of energy. Do you water by hand? I'm dealing with extreme heat as well.

Thank you for taking the time and energy to post this fantastic update.

Best of luck and take some time for yourself my friend.

looking good and the fenced in spot turned out nice. Did your critter problem absolve?
Thanks, and yeah I think I am past the worst of the critter issues.  The ferts should be watered in pretty good now.   I normally don't have many issues after they have been in the ground a few weeks.  I took measures to distract them from the plants and other actions to let them know I wasn't happy with their presence near the garden.

Thanks, was a lot more work this year than any previous year, happy they are all planted and that phase is over.

Thanks my friend.  Yes I water by hand.  I thought about a soaker hose, sprinkler, resurrect the pvc system I used at my old house, but those are going to waste too much water and the pvc system just not enough parts for this many plants.  I just hit them with a the wand about twice a week and get all the water where it needs to go.  Can do all in about an hour so not too bad.  Not going to like seeing the water bill though.  Water in our town is not cheap.  It did rain for about 2 minutes tonight, first I have seen in 2 weeks.  Slight chance for more, but I don't think so.   Looks like a hot dry summer like 2012.  That year we didn't see rain from June until like mid september.  I count on rain, but I think this year its not going to happen.  After tonight next rain chance in forcast is next Tuesday.  Its already been in the 90s more this year than all last summer I think.  At least the bugs will be better if no rain.  Looks like 97 tomorrow and upper 80s to mid 90s for the 5 days after that.

I went with a drip system this year. I know, I was wasting a lot of water with the wand. At the same time it does add extra humidity in the air. It's so dry here. We're looking at around 100 for the next couple weeks.

Keep cool, Justin.

Wow! That is a lot of plants. You are going to be a busy guy in a month or two.
Yeah, trying not to think about it too much as not sure how I can manage this fall.
I think I have the final inventory figured out.  Kinda not what thinking this winter but if the count is right, have 468 plants growing, 324 varieties.  I would classify about 10 to 12 of them in critical condition so its likely finally tally will go down a bit.
