Jubnat's 2017 grow log

So, this is really my first year focusing just on growing peppers. And I figured I'd push it a little over the limit...you know, just so I can see where my limit really is.
This is also my first time starting seeds indoors, so I'm figuring out all the problems that go along with that. I bought a couple cheap LEDs from Amazon. They seem to be working out alright, not ideal, but not bad.

I'll be planting most of these in the ground(hopefully), in a couple of different garden beds. And whatever doesn't fit will be going in pots, and I'm trying out a few of those fabric pots for the first time. I might build a little raised bed if I get time in the next couple of weeks.

Anyway...this is the first round that was started on 1/15/17. Some came up in a week or so, some took a month, and a few never germinated at all.

And then there are other seeds that I didn't have room for, so I gave them to friends. So hopefully I'll be able to get some pods from them and see how their plants do for future grows.

So...I'm pretty f**king excited with my new obsession!

And I can't say enough about the generosity of everyone here. From buying fresh pods and seeds, to participating in my first seed train, to being gifted seeds out of the blue, it's been pretty awesome so far!

Oh, and I'll get some pics up here sometime soon. Hopefully when they're moving outside...just waiting for this crazy weather to settle down.

Is the Wild Brazil the "Vrubu" variety? How does it go, growing-wise and eating-wise?

Well, I finally got a couple ripe ones(seemed to happen overnight with these guys).

First ripe pod of the season!  #FRPotS
Is that a thing?  Hah!

Heat was pretty decent, hard to describe as I haven't been eating much fresh peppers since last year.
Flavor and aroma is awesome, very chinense!

Man, I can't wait to have a whole crop of these...I'm gonna make some pizza and cut a bunch of these in half and scatter them on top like cherry tomatoes.

Here's a handful of pics from today:

This is that 7-Pot red from before...well, it fell off the plant.  But I still ate that sucka!

Inca Red Drop is looking like it'll be pretty prolific

Same with the Coyote White Zan...or is it Coyote Zan White(where the hell did that name come from anyway?!?)

Hard to tell from the picture, but this Peach Wasp is growing like crazy.  Planted in the front garden, well after the backyard garden was planted.  It gets more sun, so I'm kind of worried it'll grow really well now, but then in the heat of the summer the backyard plants are going to speed right past it.

Sorry, sort of blurry.  But these Thunder Mountain Longhorn threw me for a loop.   All I saw was dark purple, but it's just sunburn...on the other halves, they're still bright green.

These Magnum Habanero Orange are growing really well...but they do seem a bit more twisted/distorted than habaneros usually get.  I wonder if they are crossed.  Still early, though.  Got the seeds from fresh peppers from TexasHotPeppers.  Don't remember the look exactly, but all I remember is that they tasted damn good, which is why they got chosen.

....and a couple of critters to round out the night:

These caterpillars are everywhere, just trying to destroy my passionfruit vines.  Gulf Fritillary.
EbEtR9G.jpg

Halfway done with her little chrysalis.   I'm finding these everywhere....I'll pick up the handles of one of my fabric pots, and BOOM!  Orange goo everywhere.

and these two love birds, what can I say?

Looking good.... Congrats on the first ripe.ones, they look tasty, kinda like white habaneros. Sucks aboit the catterpillars though... Hope you busted them outta there.

You certainly have a great climate for growing peppers, J.

But, I also certainly wouldn't like to have to deal with your pests.
Your plants and pods look great - good luck going forward!

Plants are doing really well! I wish I had found this glog sooner.

I use BT for the caterpillars, do they sting? It sure looks like they do.

I've been living in the South for 38 years and have never seen lizard porn before. And they're all over the place down here. Great shot BTW!

Thanks guys! It's great to hear some encouragement, whenever I tell my friends and family about my peppers plants, they sort of give me that weird look and "why?" Hah! Sometimes they seem impressed, but also just like "okay...you crazy person, go and tend to your pepper plants." I'm sure y'all know what I mean. When people ask "why are you growing all those peppers?" All I can say is, I don't know, why the hell do you do anything?

But yeah, I'd never seen two lizards so intimate before either. I tried not to disturb them, I need all the help I can get with these mosquitos.

And those caterpillars are cool with me...the only ones that are. They don't sting, as I've accidentally grabbed a few of them working in the garden. The good thing about them is that they only stick to the passionfruit vines. They are the larva of the Gulf fritillary butterfly. They seem to take down some of the less healthy looking vines, and then the butterflies pollinate all the flowers.

It's crazy to see these butterflies floating around the yard and then just fly onto the passion vines as if attracted by a magnet, even when there are no flowers on it. It's strange to think about this unseen attraction of an insect and its host plant.

Man, looking at those pics from a month ago...and damn! some of these plants have grown!
I guess you don't realize it when you're looking at them every day.
Enjoyed my first Bonda Ma Jacques with dinner.  Pretty tastey!
I went out yesterday morning and that and one of my Negronne figs were the only things ripe.

Been waiting on these damn Yellow Brainstrains for ages
iKO1G2T.jpg

I think I took that pic over a week ago.  One of them is just showing the first signs of ripening, and after that, I'm going to have a good handful from this one plant!

I'm loving how early these Farmer's Market Jalapenos start their corking.  (and when is someone going to come up with a better name for these things...calling it a farmer's market jalapeno because you found it at a farmer's market?  come on!)

I'm liking the camo look as these Pimenta de Neyde x Bhut Jolokia start ripening
NClB9N4.jpg

And then I've got a few that I think are not growing true to type(not that I'm worried about it, I either bought, or traded them knowing they were open pollinated).
These Numex Sunrise look a little different than all the others I've seen(They're huge!), they're longer than my Thunder Mountain Longhorn(which aren't really as long as I thought they'd be anyway).  Hopefully they'll ripen up to yellow, or maybe I really mixed something up!

And this Thai Orange Large
PiuLMBV.jpg

In the pic it looks a bit red-orange, but it really is quite red....and quite large!
Maybe it was crossed with some type of Jalapeno or something.
I haven't tried it yet, but it looks like it's gonna be good!

Hmmm...

Need to get a better shot of these, I'm about to have a ton of them. These aren't quite completely ripe, but...Peach? Wasp. Most of them look really amazing. I guess it'll be a Red Wasp.

Here's a decent harvest from the last couple of days, minus some of the yellows...freezing those for sauce making later on...
I need to get a better camera, after seeing some of the pics you guys post.

Finished drying these last week.  I'm waiting until a get a little more to grind them all up.  I'm really looking forward to trying out the different single-variety powders, and then blending them as I like.

Great harvest, Jubnat!

The PDN Bhut cross looks awesome.  A couple of
years ago, Tristen's PDNxBonda crossed one of my
red BJ.  Made for some very interesting pods.

Keep rockin' it, J!

Check out my first ripe Bonda Mahala. This is windchicken's Bonda Ma Jacques and Yellow 7-Pot cross. Great pepper, I loved it....but I feel like it was trying to tell me something...

ODtkA3D.jpg
One of the best tasting crossed peppers out there, nice fruity flavour and that 7 pot heat, both good Caribbean peppers and a match made in heaven.
Gary had made sure it's gone global, so growing in a lot of different climates.
My best producing plant easily.
Be first plant on my 2018 list. [emoji106]

How long do the BOC take from Seed to finish would you guess?

No idea, to be honest.  About the same as any chinense.  There are too many variables to actually worry about a number of days, for me at least.  A few months...

And I wouldn't call it finishing, when fruiting starts, that's just the beginning.
