Julie's 2014 Glog

Starting a glog mostly for my own purposes. I've been growing peppers for 2-3 years, so I'm still learning, but this is my first year of recording/tracking in a glog.

Hubby and I planted on January 4th 2014. I'm keeping record best as I can as things sprout.

Here's what we put out:
2/3 Cayenne Purple
0/3 Jalapeno Red
2/3 Jalapeno Purple
3/3 Bulgarian Carrot
3/3 Peter Pepper
2/3 Habanero Chocolate
2/3 Aji Crystal
2/3 Devil’s Tongue White
1/2 Monkey Face - sprouted but had a casualty :(
0/2 CNG21500
2/2 Jamaican Hot Chocolate
0/2 Aribibi Gusano
2/2 Habanero Long Peach
0/2 Trinidad Scorpion
5/5 Bhut Jolokia
1/6 Cayenne Red
0/1 Mystery

The 'Mystery' pepper was a random seed that feel out of a packet while we were seeding. The Bhut Jolokia and Cayenne Red were seeds I attempted to save from last season; we'll see if they sprout. We like using the jiffy pellets for the convinience, but also tried some egg cartons with medium once we ran out of the pellets. None of the stores carry them just yet; we're in full blown winter wonderland here in Canada. We also have 4 overwintered plants that seem to be doing well so far. A cayenne red, Jalapeno, and 2 Bhut Jolokia.

Many thanks to Hendrix1326 for sharing some of his seeds; very excited to try these varieties.

This year, we have a 5 tier rack that we're hoping to use. We mounted a few lights, but we'll need to add more. Shelves are adjustable, so that will come in handy.

Here's our little buddies as of this morning:

Edit:
More as of January 19 2014
2/2 Golden California Wonder
2/2 Monster Bell
1/2 Aribibi Gusano
0/2 CNG21500
1/2 Trinidad Scorpion Yellow
1/2 Moruga Scorpion Red
0/3 Datil
2/2 Kori Sitakame
1/1 Jamaican Hot Chocolate

Does anyone know if the following peppers need special germination environments? More heat type of thing? I'm not having much luck with these:
CGN21500
Aribibi Gusano

My CGN21500 sprouted fine along my other seeds in the germ tray. Took about 8 days. Used rapid rooters, dome and heat mat set to 83f. Hope that helps!

Took a picture after my weekly watering. Most have their set of true leaves or slightly further along. I know some people don't like using the clear cups, but I've never had any issues and I like that I can see how the roots are coming along.

I updated my count of my first post. Threw out what hadn't sprouted yet, and had one casualty (it had dried out sadly, my own fault).

It's been over a month since my last post. Everything is a good size now, some have been replanted in bigger cups.

And most of my lot is in this pic

I'm at 36 plants and don't expect any casualties at this point.

Great looking plants.
Just curious when using clear cups do the roots touch the sides of the cups or do they just grown on the bottom? Just curios if the roots try to avoid light.

The roots will eventually touch the sides but it seems that they reach the bottom first. I do bottom water so that might have something to do with it too. I also let mine outgrow their cups before transplanting just to make sure they have a strong root ball, so the cup is full of roots by the time I transplant.

I transplanted a few over the weekend, and took a picture if it tells you anything.

Thanks just wondering the effect of using clear cup

People argue weather you should or should not use a clear cup becuse the roots try to avoid light and it doesn't make such a strong roots structure.

Roots look great to me.

Great grow progress, Julie :)

I've never heard of pros/cons of clear cups, I just usually use the opaque ones anyway. Same with final buckets, I have white or black buckets of opaque plastic.

We had a blizzard last week and had no power for 2 days. This means no heat, no water, and no lights. No casualties since the plants are fairly well established, but I had some seeds set to germinate that I think kicked the bucket. The good news? Seeds were only tomatoes, herbs, and flowers, so no pepper losses :)

Just a few pics, I'm now using 2 tiers of my shelves.

Moved a few more to bigger cups too.

I think my over winters didn't make it: they were looking good until March, but now very brown and not so much green looking.

I cannot believe we went from this on April 24

To something more suited for pepper growing like this:

Potted 11 plants this weekend. The rest will go in the garden.

I am putting these out for the day, then bringing back indoors overnight. They are doing amazing and look really happy. In my region, the last safe frost date is not for another week or two, so the pots make it easy to benefit of the sunshine we do get, but cold nights.

Edit: And another pic to show roots:

Realized I never posted pictures of my outdoor planting. Pics are from June 1st, so things are looking better and bigger now. Pics were before watering too, so they look pretty droopy.

Some varieties have already put out pods, cayenne purple, jalapeno purple, bulgarian carrot, aji crystal, kori sitakame, and some of the bells. Can't wait till things kick it into high gear.

Oh goodness, I haven't posted in a long time.

July 21st, I should take a more recent one:

Today's harvest:

I made two batches of BBQ sauce with some of the tomatoes: one with Jamaican Hot Chocolate, the other with Moruga Scorpion Red.

I also made bread and butter pickles, and added the Hungarian Wax Peppers, Aji Crystal, and Jalapenos peppers in them. I also added to each jar a different super hot. So one got a JHC, another Moruga Scorpion, a Habanero Chocolate, and Ghost Pepper.

Some fun pics from late August
