Mattys first ever Glog "Into the fire" 2019 season

Hello everyone and thanks for looking at my "Into the Fire" Glog!!

So I started my gardening hobby in my early 20's about 16 years ago now, and though I have played around with many types of flowers/vegis  tomato's is what most of my energy was put into. I loved alll the different colors and types that could be grown which really reminds me of all the exciting Chilli variety's that exist today. A couple seasons ago while looking for some info on a particular type of sweet pepper I stumbled onto a few videos of some people eating super hots (Ghost,Reapers ect..).  After looking into it a little more I figured this would be a very interesting thing to grow even just as a novelty since really no one in my area grows much if anything at all.

Last Winter I went and bought some seeds from Ebay..one was a mixed bag Ghost/Reaper/Scorpion...another was the Peter Pepper and the third was some type of Thai i believe. Only the Thai ended up growing true to type and the other 2 was a Cayenne and Ornamental. I was pretty disappointed when they did finally start putting out pods. It was around that time I started looking for a group or forum dedicated to Chillis, and luck would have it I found THP and all of you fantastic peoples.

Anyways with the boring back story outta the way I really planned ahead for this years grow....I built a 6'Hx6'Lx2'D grow box (not exact mesurments) which has 3 shelves and the middle one able to come out if I wnated to grow larger plants from the bottom tier. I went overkill on seed types making 3 decent size buys, 2 of which were 30+ from Garth at TexasHotPeppers and a smaller one from a fella in Arz.

I do not plan to grow all of these as my wife would kill me, but 20 or so might not be so bad.

So would like to see some favorites and suggestions from the fine people here at THP so I can kinda get it down to a much much smaller grow list. Will also get some pics up shortly here of my grow box which still has one more shelf I need to wire up just waiting on a few more strip lights to arrive in the mail, but will still give an idea of what it will all look like when its done.

In final: This is a new hobby for me within the hobby I already enjoy...I am going to try some new things (new for me) and even the much earlier starts then normal will be interesting to see how it all comes out at the end.  I look forward to the input from the community and keeping this glog updated as much as I can.

Here is too success in 2019!!

CHEERS!

So was able to get a few things done today..made an inventory finally which I will post shortly and started to put my middle shelf back lights on after getting 3 full 5m strips in the mail earlier this week. I added some of the smaller strips inbetween just to not waste them since they were already cut to size already and were mounted to the cardboard I had covered and took out.

So I had enough big strips to get about half of the back done.....Is still some clean up that needs to be done...extra pieces cut off and straighten it abit on some of the strips. Can really tell the difference from the bigger SMDs to the 3528s and then the 2835s

Yeah I also used 5050's and 5630's...I had a bunch of 3528's and 2835s which are all the red and blues you see in that picture, they are all the strips in the middle-ish area and the 5050's and 5630's on the very top and bottom. I badly wanna try some 7020's or the 8520's which use a chip from Korea compaired to the cheap ones made on mainland China....Like strips are still from China but they import the SMD's.....I belive its like $8-9cdn for the ones I just mentioned 5m roll.

And aye Andy the 2 extra rolls would certainly make a big difference far as lumens/brightness goes but they can be annoying to work with sometimes as well.

So guys...how often should I be feeding these little guys? Also......so right now I  have the plants elevated closer to the lights..So  my question is, being that the lights seem to be pretty bright should I still worry about moving them up closer?? Do you guys think they would be ok like I have them on post #143?

Was very busy weekend so I did not have a ton of time to play around in the "glogosphere" as Paul so nicely puts it........

So abit of good news I spose...pretty much everything that I put in for germination on the 26th of Jan germ'd.

The bad news....well now the entire middle shelf is FULL of seedlings in small starter pots, some with 2-3 plants that will need to be seperated just yet. I really was hoping to not use the top shelf till hopefully first week of March when the Tomatoes hit the dirt. Not so sure how impressed my wife is going to be about lighting it up...... :scared: :scared: :scared: :scared: :scared: :scared: :scared:

Kudos for the great germination rate, Matty.

Shelf full of starts, and nowhere to go?
You are now a victim of your own success

I would 100% agree with you Paul...but only if you replaced 'success' with 'stupidity'  :high:

The last batched I tried changing a few things...I used some wally world potting soil and mixed it with 60%-70% of peat and vermiculate. I also have all the trays on the top shelf which is closed up so temp is staying warmer then down below. Hard to say without trying the first mix if it was the soil, temps or both.

Unless I get rid of half of the seedlings I am going to have no choice but to light up the top, is no way they are all gonna make it in 3'' starter pots for the next 2 months till they can move out to the hoop house in April

So quick food question...for nw I am gonna have to make due with what I gots. Right now I have some. Pro mix root booster which is a 5-15-5 NPK....I have some Schultz all purpose 25-8-20 and a Schulz tomater and veggie mix which is 18-10-30.

Any suggestions would be very welcome on which fertilizer to use for now untill maybe I can get something better or closer to what the masses are using.

LOL

You know...the older I get the more that 'Man-boobs' or 'Moobs" become a real thing for me.

The first set of plants I did feed I gave the root booster last week just cause it says that it helps seedlings establish good roots..wether it does or not I dunno. I am going to take a few of the mystery plants and do some side by side testwith those 3 and probably a Miracle gro and a homemade mix that I have been workong on the past month or so by soaking a few different foods high in the NPK and sub nutes.
