I applied shredded red cedar when my plants looked to be getting worse from the intense heat in the Vegas.  Once I applied the mulch and put in an afternoon shady spot, they improved significantly.  Don't have any problems with weeds and I've noticed less pests.  Pics to come soon....

I use straw hay.

 
 
x2 for this. Make sure you get actual straw though, not hay, because it will start growing a hayfield in your pots.

I don't know why I call it "straw hay" all the time.
