Old age... plants will eventually shed all of their oldest leaves. The low leaves also become "unnecessary" as the foliage extends upwards, and it will also become burdensome. (as it will be harder for transpiration to occur on the low branches) The plant will abort these leaves, as required. Or they will just be lost through normal attrition. So long as the plant it otherwise healthy, let them become mulch.
