Over Wintering chillis

Hi There

Just a quick question I have cut my chillis ready for over wintering. Do i need to keep them any where special(ie airing cupboard)? Can I leave them in the compost or do I need to dry root them?

My experience is that they need some light and water over the winter. Also bugs will need to be kept in check.
From my somewhat limited knowledge, a cabinet sounds like a bad choice. Mine are in the basement under grow lights.
