PaulG 2019

No grow log for the 2018 season other than the Pimenta de Neyde x Bonda Ma Jacques
thread dedicated to Trippa's cross. That one is an ongoing community project going into
second year and a test of the F7 generation. I imagine I will mention it once-in-a-while in
this thread, but the details of its progress will be in the dedicated thread.

I am deciding on a grow list for the 2019 season after growing only Trippa's cross this
season (2018). I definitely have some old favorites that will comprise the great majority
of the grow. I have limited space, so I'm counting on nature to help me make the final
decision. I'll probably start lots of seeds since I'm gun-shy from the poor germination
rates the past couple of seasons.

Here's the pool. Would be nice to be able to grow a bunch of all of them!  I think my
neighbor will shelter the overflow in his yard, but we'll see what to plant and how many
based on what might germinate

c. chinese - 10 varieties
  • PdN x BMJ, F7, white and violet varieties, Trippa's cross
  • Fatali, F2 of seed from Pepper Joe's
  • 7 Pot Burgundy, brown phenotype, pecan shape from 2017 F2 of the 7PB from Windchicken
  • Scotch Bonnet, MoA, F2 of seeds from John/Sim, not high production, but some nice pods
  • JA Red Habanero, F5 of seed from Walk Good/Devv
  • Yellow Scorpion, F7 aka Yellow Trinidad Moruga Scorpion and CARDI Scorpion, from Spankycolts plant 2012
  • Bhut Jolokia, Red, F4, from Spankycolts plant 2012
  • Bhut Jolokia, Chocolate, F3 of seed from Georgia Growhead
  • Bhut Jolokia, hybrid, F2 - I believe it is a  (BJred) x (Pdn x BMJ F1 or F2)
  • Yellow 7 Pot, F2 of seed from Trippa 2013
c. annuum - 4 varieties:
  • JA Red Mushroom, F3, brown phenotype, seed from Refining Fire
  • Pimenta de Padron - Spanish seed, fry up while small and green, throw on some salt
  • Pimenta del Piquillo - Spanish seed, sweet, very flavorful, small stuffers
  • Guindilla - Spanish seed, spicy heat, great pickled, long and skinny
c. frutescens - 2 varieties:
  • Nagahari from Tezpur, India, supposedly very, very hot freebie from Pepper Joe's 2017
  • Chili Costa Rica, F2 (2014) from Hippy Seed Company seed, 2012
c. pubescens - 1 variety:
  • Red Rocoto, F3 of Peruvian Market seed, 2016
That about does it. Seeding time will be here before we know it!

Plants are looking great Paul!

I can't believe how far along those red rocoto roots are! Jeez!

Ooh! Page topper.

Can't miss this one.

I've been slacking it around here, or been sooo busy, yeah that's it. I stay away a few days and bam!

You're killing it as usual Paul ;) I'm trying your technique this season and growing them larger before dirt day.

One thing I noticed about the square pots versus the round ones (#1 pots), I use both. The plants "stick" in the square pots; they fall out of the round ones

Good to hear from you, Scott! Thanks for
the vote of confidence, although I must
say I would not let them get so big
if we had an earlier Spring/Summer

Hope to get a look at your awesome plants
real soon, my friend

Those plants are stunning Paul! Can't wait to see them full of pods changing colors. Thanks, Shane! You and me both, buddy. Page 20!!! Dayuum! Thats what happens when you have more time than money!

These were in test tubes not too long ago:

Paul, that Burgundy Pecan keeps catching my eye. Is there a story to the Pecan part?

I had a 7P Burgundy growing strong from a good strain of some very old seed this year - the last I had - but it seized inexplicably right after I bonchi'd it :(

Kinda taking a vicarious interest in how yours grows now!

The 7 Pot Burgundy came from Sawyer in 2014, I believe.
I grew it a couple of seasons, and in 2016, one of the plants
was throwing brown pods. One nice one looked like a pecan,
shape and color, so I saved the seeds from that pod.

I have since read that the 7 Pot Burgundy is or wasn't very
stable, and a variety of colors have come from the strain.
Don't know how true that is, but the brown pods were very
interesting. Used them for powder so can't say much about
heat, etc.

Here's a pic of some from the 2016 season. The pecan pod
isn't in this pic, but you get the idea:

Here's another:

And another...

Some more in this post.

Hope all is well with your grow, CD.

Thanks Paul, you must have a heck of a file system!  Mine was from back a while too - 2012 I think. Smoothish full pod and decent color (subject to memory).  I was happy to find it digging through the old seeds this past fall, now kicking myself for being so aggressive on the cut-back.  I guess rash decisions are one of the hazards of growing at or past maximum capacity.

EDIT - Yeah, bottom row left is more toward my memory, but slightly different shade of color.  And again, that file system!

Those pods were a bit shy of totally ripe.
They should be a just a tad darker.

Just keeping track of stuff...

Pot-ups to square pots seem to be happening in
groups of 4 every few days as groups of plants
hit the 40-day mark.

Yawn.   :D

The Yellow BrainStrain* was the first First Round seed
to hook back on Jan. 1. It has always been sort of a
beast, but its bestiality outgrew its peers, so had to
leave the grow shelf and go to the workbench after
it was potted up:

It responded by forking and budding at 49 days,
same as the F7W plants  :

Your workbench looks like the grown-ups' table during the holidays. "Ah, yeah, we see you down there. In your cute little Solo cups. Nah, go away now, the adults are talking."

Have been looking at the BJ hybrid
and the Mystery Volunteer:

The slight purpling and the leaf shape and
texture make me think the Mystery Pepper
is a BJ hybrid. Not purple enough to be a
PdNxBMJ cross, and there were no other
purple varieties:

Time will tell  :)

The topped Aji Amarillo has forked.
Bud since removed:

Hook: 12/13
Topped: Jan. 17th (abt. 35 days)
Fork: around 2/15 (abt. 65days)

There are 3 or four more branches doing
the same thing at various stages. Should
do very in a 3-gallon (real volume) pot this
summer!

My 7Pot Burgundy Red did not germ
for me this season. Last of my seed
for that as well. I need to chase down
some good seed next Fall.
