No grow log for the 2018 season other than the Pimenta de Neyde x Bonda Ma Jacques
thread dedicated to Trippa's cross. That one is an ongoing community project going into
second year and a test of the F7 generation. I imagine I will mention it once-in-a-while in
this thread, but the details of its progress will be in the dedicated thread.

I am deciding on a grow list for the 2019 season after growing only Trippa's cross this
season (2018). I definitely have some old favorites that will comprise the great majority
of the grow. I have limited space, so I'm counting on nature to help me make the final
decision. I'll probably start lots of seeds since I'm gun-shy from the poor germination
rates the past couple of seasons.

Here's the pool. Would be nice to be able to grow a bunch of all of them!  I think my
neighbor will shelter the overflow in his yard, but we'll see what to plant and how many
based on what might germinate

c. chinese - 10 varieties

  • Bhut Jolokia, hybrid, F2 - I believe it is a  (BJred) x (Pdn x BMJ F1 or F2)
  • Yellow 7 Pot, F2 of seed from Trippa 2013
c. annuum - 4 varieties:
  • JA Red Mushroom, F3, brown phenotype, seed from Refining Fire
  • Pimenta de Padron - Spanish seed, fry up while small and green, throw on some salt
  • Pimenta del Piquillo - Spanish seed, sweet, very flavorful, small stuffers
  • Guindilla - Spanish seed, spicy heat, great pickled, long and skinny
c. frutescens - 2 varieties:
  • Nagahari from Tezpur, India, supposedly very, very hot freebie from Pepper Joe's 2017
  • Chili Costa Rica, F2 (2014) from Hippy Seed Company seed, 2012
c. pubescens - 1 variety:
  • Red Rocoto, F3 of Peruvian Market seed, 2016
That about does it. Seeding time will be here before we know it!

Had to remove germinator domes to keep temperatures
below 90˚ in the center of the trays. Edges still maintaining 85˚:

Will have to be more attentive to keeping cubes moist.

More pics after I run an errand...

Really digging the rich green leaf colors, Paul.  And glad to see your rocoto getting busy already.  It's a good time in the PNW right now with the sun shining brightly and the temperatures still cool!

Right, CD, I can feel the weather taking a turn
towards Spring lately. I hope the warmer than
normal nights continue into the Summer.

A banana hammock...
Yeah, a nice thick shaft would make
some people think of a hammock

I hope they can make it to plant-out
without snapping off being moved
around all the time.

Was telling LSUTigers about watering plants,
and how I use a scale to weigh them and see
if they need water.

The square pot is filled with potting mix and
sealed in a bag as a standard. Plants are
weighed against the standard to see if they
need water.

I am hoping these plants can stay in the
garage until plant-out in about six weeks.

Paul I like the Kratky Milk Jar. I want to try this next year.
This is my first try at the Kratky method, Rob.
Don't know if you have seen Peter S's video
showing the 32-gallon Kratky. The roots of the
plant filled the entire garbage can! Worth taking
the few minutes to see it.

Looking great as usual! Your jungle camping trip is fast approaching, I'd say.

Are you leaving the bottom of that Kratky bottle uncovered? Always interesting to hear how different people set those grows up. Those roots are lookin' real nice.

I'n not sure if there will be room for me in there
after another week or two, 'Fish

I cover the bottom  of the Kratky jar with foil. I used
the duct tape on top because it's a hassle trying to
make the foil really tight around the neck of the bottle
every time I take it off to check the roots. This arrange-
ment is much easier to deal with.

BTW great article on Tokyo in this month's NatGeo.
Have you seen it? Very interesting, I had no idea 37
million people lived there. To put that in perspective,
my whole state of Oregon only has 4.2 million people!

No, I haven't seen that. Not sure exactly how they put that stat, but it's closer to 15 million that actually live here. The head count pretty much doubles during the work day; so many people live further away and commute in (which I'm in the middle of at this moment, though I do live in Tokyo).

Maybe the figure is for the Tokyo prefecture, not just the main city.

It looks like the 'Greater Tokyo Area' is probably where that 37 million figure comes from, that being Tokyo plus a few surrounding prefectures. But there's apparently a lot of other weirdness about areas referred to as Tokyo. It's not surprising that Japan would manage to make something as simple as "what is Tokyo" hopelessly convoluted.
lol.gif

The actual prefecture looks like it's around 13-14 million. According to that page, which is from the local government, foreigners are about 3.3% of the population in this prefecture. And there are way more of us here than anywhere else in the country (outside of US military bases); it's a good indication of how tough the government makes it to relocate here. It's a good place with a lot of good people, but the racism is palpable sometimes.
