Pepper stingers

What are the theories behind stingers?  I have a few chocolate habs that have curved stingers, I also have some jalapenos that have stingers.  I suspect it may be the flower tube becoming a new tissue, what are your thoughts?

Excuse my ignorance: Flower tubes?

Never thought on this, but yes I have noticed tails / stingers on things I had not previously noticed.  Its more of a back in the day thing.  So first thought is there is more variety available today.  But you know, I do wonder if maybe some of the newer to the US variety with tails might not be getting mixed into the gene pool by mistake.

Do you have photos?  I would love to have jalapeno with a tail.  Have been getting more and more interested in lower heat but still cool looking peppers.  Jalepeno with a tail / stinger sounds flat cool looking.
