I knocked the sand off the sprouts the seed is still on the plant they sprouted in less than a week.

I'm sure they could handle a day or so without bubbles.

Flood and drain?
Not so much.
You could manually dump the siphon in the grow bed by scooping the solution into the bed.  I had to do that a few times last year when I still had a flood and drain on my aquaponics.

Also, that gadget is pretty nifty looking.  Might try a DIY one.  Any suggestions on material parts?  Also, would it make more sense to use a 2 liter bottle?

I picked the Dansani bottle because it was a plant based bottle some of the comments I read online suggested that certain bottles may have chemicals that people were worried about.

It's more or less a sponge held in place with sand (More like gravel) to cover the seeds. Replace the water once a week, shade the roots you're good to go.

Curious to see if it gets moldy in time, or roots get sun damage, and how long it takes till the roots are to large to remove every week as instructed.

Someone pointed this out:

The water is replaced weekly the stem of the plant will eventually replace the sponge (from pictures on twitter). The roots are shaded by your flyers or news paper that you fold around the bottle and use an elastic band. You can trim the roots back if needed or open it just enough to dump the water and pour water in.

Q: What should I do if algae grows in my water bottle?
A: If algea begins to grow in your water bottle, discard the bottle and plant your Petomato™ in a different recycled bottle.
Q: What should I do if I see what scales in the water?
A: This is a plant disease and you should change the water Petomato™ immediately if you see this occur.

I had to splt the sponge to get to the plant from petomato 1 into petomato 2

the pepper in the orange cap (the one I removed) had a really long single root with tiny roots starting to spread near the top (where the air pocket is)
