PIC 1's............Pod-ography.............2013

Good Eve-ning, and Welcome to my bog...glog !

Hey folks sorry for the late glog-up I'm a month behind last years startup,...... ...... I still have 12+ weeks (plenty of time) before I can start think about hardening off the plants outdoors.

First off I'd like to give a shout out to those who followed my grow last season. Thanks for all the comments, thoughts and ideas. The chuckles we shared......there were some good laughs...(and especially all the criticisms........ :liar: .......hah)

To those who are new, I try to follow a "weekend update" format with photos and captions. Although if anyone has questions or replies that needs and answer or response I'll get back during the week. I hope to keep this interesting and entertaining...

and away we go!

Garden Rewind

scan0001.jpg

Here's my 1st garden (1986)...it was modest but what we grew we used in our kitchen. I had a couple of dual bulb 4ft T12 fixtures in my basement. A couple grow-lux and daylight color temp bulbs. The indoor grow was far superior to the vegetable starts sold at the local nurseries.
My Italian neighbor couldn't understand why his bell pepper starts only had flowers while mine had golfball size peppers very early in the season.....The hot varieties I grew back then were the cayennes, orange habaneros, and a few different type or thai-birds. Things have changed but I still grow those varities.

Here's a shot from last season. I grew around 150+ pepper plants in two different sections of the garden. Plants were grown in raised beds and containers from 5 gal up to 20 gal

A typical weekend harvest shot from later in the season when the gardens at full swing.

This is one of my seed catalogs, the c.chinense....the seeds that invade our gardens every year...
This book and other seed catalogs are kept in a tupperware container container on a shelve in the corner of the basement.
No elaborate system needed, The seeds are kept in 1.5" zip backs. I have seeds that are as far back as 2007, and still germinating without a hitch....theres no need to pitch. Speaking of pitching theres some old baseball card to display the size of the pages used.

IMG_5217.jpg

These are what I use to get the seeds on their way. I take 1/4 bag of each, mix that into a 5 gal bucket and moisten with water. The spagnum peat give fluff to the texture also helps indicate when the mix need to be re-moistened but the lighter color it displays. The vermiclite helps with water retension while letting the air and moisture through. The seed starting mix also has fine grain perlite to keep drainage and airflow moving.

IMG_5165.jpg

Ha..........I knew this chop stick would come in handy someday. Once the seed medium is moistened I'll make a hole with the stick 1/4" down .
The seeds will be planted at the same depth. That helps when misting the top with water. Seeds that are planted too high may dry out or seeds planted to deep may rot.

IMG_5099.jpg

I use two 2ft x 4ft germinating mats. Enough area to warm 8 seed flats at once...

IMG_5246.jpg

I don't bother with a thermostat for the mats. I run them through a timer, 2 hrs on, 1 hr off...continous. The average temp of the soil stays at +/-85 deg

IMG_5101.jpg

This is the main grow room. I built the 2 tier shelving units 8ft long x 2ft wide. 8 flats fit underneath the lighting units. Here we have four narrow spaced T8 4 bulb fixtures with 6500k bulbs and one 8ft TF twin bulb tight spaced fixture with 4100k bulbs. I have 4 identical systems in the room with an addition of three 400w mh fixtures with 7200k lamps. The room has 2- 20a dedicated circuits and 1-15a to split the current draw..

more photos in a few minutes....thanks for looking!

Cool..........you can also soak the planks in some cheap booze for an added flame...flare to the food

Flair... Flare... what's the diff' ;)  I understand you can use aluminum foil if you can't get banana leaves, but I'd rather use something organic that I can burn when I'm done with it rather than have to wash and recyce... :flamethrower:

I only saw & tasted the country pepper green but a local told me they would eventually turn yellow, for some reason they like or picked them green. I don't know about turning red but it wouldn't surprise me as I've found what someone tells you isn't always right ... especially out in da country, hehehe

Red Scorpion

Serrano, Jalapeno and Waialua Peppers

more pots ready to be potted up.....when I have the time.....

not sure what the purple plant is...when the pods ripen I'll have to get Chris (cmpman1974) a shout. This was from his seed stock

Chocolate Madballz......one of the taller plants, over 2ft

Jamaican Red pod (#2)

Bahamian Goat ...seeds from .Brent (Fade to Black) Some of the lower original leaves from the indoor grow are still on the plant. You can see what has grown on the upper portion since planted outdoors 3 weeks ago. This plant is around 2ft tall and growing by the day (and night)

ok, too many more plants to show and I don't want to hog the air waves so I'll try to keep the limit reasonable...in the future
here's a food shot with the shot.....of peppers

In the bowl I have about 2lbs of Hawaiian Yellowfin 1/2" cut, 1/2 a shallot diced, minced Datil and Red Hads, cilantro, key lime with a splash of Soy, Toasted Sesame Oil, Ginger Juice and Sea Salt.

 "Poke' "...served with tortilla chips..
This dish is quite different from "Ceviche" whereas Ceviche cooks from the acidic compound and can take from 4 hrs to overnight depending on the seafood.
Poke is flavored from the acidic, sauce and oils and is usually eaten immediately after the processing.
I could eat this everyday................and we do when we're  in Hawaii

see ya all next time........thanks for taking a peek

oh the foodie pics, love em... :drooling:  Plants are looking great..

 top notch update again, Greg. All plants are looking as good as one would expect from the master :) I like it that the Orange Blob is as bushy as it was last season, it really stays low in height but branches out as much as it possible can. Thanks for the update! The Pimenta Elisir pods are different in shape and color so the dark horse is not a that variety. No idea but I always love the dark foliage :)

Looking great Greg. The Maui/Fish arrangement could produce an interesting cross. My lone Fish is staying compact and loaded with pods. I was expecting it to grow like a typical annuum and thought maybe I was doing something wrong. The Goats I received from you have a bunch of pods(maybe too many for their size) and are taking on a Hab growth habit. Can't wait to taste what all the fuss is about. Have a great week.

Hey Greg, just stopped in to check out your grow.  Things are
really on the up-and-up for your plants, and you've even had a
little vacation!  I always love looking at your plants on the patio!

Good growin', brother!

Hola amigo hope all is well … I tried your Chocolate Scorpion the other day, man some serious heat but I can’t put my finer on da taste. Guess I’ll have to try a few mas, hehe. Looking forward to your next play, have a great evening and weekend!

Forgot to mention, that Poke looks awesome!  I absolutely love Poke.  You just reminded me I haven't had any in a while.  I need to remedy that soon.  :)

Wow man you do not cease to amaze! Those are amazing looking plants. Healthy and lush. Makes me wish it was spring again here. That purple plant looks like a Black Pearl/Prince. Loving the food shots... I wanna go get some Tuna man - looks delicious!

Shallot = Spring Onion & Cilantro = Danja/Coriander?

How's your Guatemalan Chiltepin doing?  Mine is doing okay for the amount of shade it's growing in, it's about to flower... any day now...

a little update........

"Out through the Indoors"........Here's the old plant room with a new makeover......... :tear: ........freshly painted and turned back into a guest room...... :tear:
Right out the window we have some Biker Billy's, Zapotec and other Jalapeno variants. The new main grow area is just a sketch on paper with a pencil.......

There's my bud, Sunny... on the watch tower He's suppose to be watching the plants, or the birds, butterflies, those dam little grasshoppers that keep putting holes in the leaves, but instead he continues to watch me....I'm watching you Sunny ( two fingers pointing from my eyes to his) ............ :D

Not the best photo but here we have 2 "Pegrano's". A few years back Ronnie (Alabama Jack), bubby (buddy).....ha, and another chilehead from this site and I met up at "Heaven on Seven" here in Chi-town. Great day, by the way....Ronnie brought his seed catalog, fat like a bible. He offered seeds...anything that he had, great jesture !
Well my eyes aren't what they use to be and that place is dimly lit. I struggled to view the list and finally gave up. So I asked "AJ" what did you bring that you know I don't have. He said, ya gotta check these out. They're called Pegrano's. Apparently he got the seeds from some dude in California and it's a Pequin x Serrano cross.
They are a great producer whether you eat them green or let them ripen red or do what AJ does and dry them and use them in chili. These two plants came from the original seeds which I had extras. If you look at the plant on the left the leaves have that "Goat's Weed" color and fuzziness while the plant on the right has the shiny usual look. They both have identical pods and both will ripen directly from green to red.........cool pods if anyone wants to hit me up for seeds after the season...

Ok, a few pod shots....some Yellow Habanero's

Yellow Jamaican Bonnet (Ocho Rios mkt)

Bahamian Goat (Cappy)...these have the bonnet shape, others that I'm growing are more crevesed but all have the same peach color and when you break one open it it has that smokey gun range scent followed by the floral notes.

ok some non hots....these are some Fresno's....they grow like weeds, just don't pull them out by mistake...

Guatemalen Chiltepin.........this is the 3rd year that I'm growing them. Seeds brought back from dried pods. The chili's are oval to a point. However some of the pods on this plant are looking a bit larger, some almost Pequin shape. I'm still using the seeds out of the dried pods for seed stock. Thanks to my son Ryan and Irene his girlfriend for bringing these seeds and a few others back.

An overhead of Ramon's JA Hab (#1)...there's a few pods popping out.....Great !

bump...tanks

another round of photo's before the Baby Octopus hits the grill....

Trinidad Yellow Scotch Bonnet plant.....starting to spread its wings.

"Fish".........what I like about this variety is you get variegation throughout the leaves, branches, petiole, calyx and fruit.......striped white lightning

no I didn't get mad and punch it in the gut !.....Here's the 1st Douglah, nothing how the rest will look, but hey....it's the 1st runt on the plant

a Yellow Brain, no pods yet but flowers galore.

speaking of Yellow Brains here's the Yellow Scotch Bonnet x Yellow Brain cross that I'm working on. We're at the F2 stage, I grew a plant indoors throughout the winter. and forced the plant to put out a couple pods. I kept the best pod out of 3 and here's what we're getting. I'm happy with the results, there's a few more pods on the plant right now and they look similar. The plant has the lateral branching of the Jamaican Bonnet...I'm also happy with that.

a few grounders....left is a Zanahoria (P-Son), center Orange Primo, right Maui Purple. The photo doesn't do the Zanahoria justice. The leaves have a beautiful pastel purple tint.................anybody have a Crayola............... :D

Butch T....hitting 3ft tall no pods yet but.......

as you can see the Butch T is throwing out and umbrella load of flowers.

Red Bhut Jolokia's

I'm have way through .................more shots after dinner

Always a pleasure to peruse thru your updates, typical excellent photos and great layout, you’ll be having massive harvest soon with all those pods popping. Love them all but very impressed with the look of your Yellow Scotch Bonnet x Yellow Brain cross, that should be an interesting one to taste. Do I smell a review coming Greg?

Have a great 4th brethren \o/

back from dinner.....

XL Caribbean's starting to come in. These Caribbean Reds (compliment to Tim Smith) produce large blocky thick walled pods...hot, habby and tasty !

Huge Twisted Habs............don't remember if these were from P-Sons stock or the original ones I received from Chris (cmpman 1974)

Caribbean Reds.........smoother and thin walled compared to the XL's. These have been my standard for years....lets just say after the Orange Hab was my standard to grow.

Belize City Scotch Bonnets...

Avenir Hab

one of only 2 Reapers that I have. This one is only in a 7 gal container and is screaming to move up. This one will hit an 18 gal utility tub. My other one rests in a 10 gal
No pods yet, I keep bracking my back to look.................Come here Sunny................lol

Some itty-bitty Datil's........I'm using these and a few other ripe pods in a Papaya, Pineapple, Mango salsa tomorrow.......and when my wifes not looking I'll slip in the 7/Pot.

not the normal shape for these but again its the first on the plant.....and looks over fed......hah. It's a Red Congo x 7/Pot. These are surprisingly hot. Takes the breath away cause you're thinking "Bongo-Congo" and instead it drums ya in the head with 7 Pots..... ;)

a bunch of young Cardi Yellow x Bhut Jolokias.
