PjPEPPERS Bonsai indoor/outdoor glog

Well folks...here goes!

Our 2013 indoor grow is the first step for freedom for us. We are planning on using this years seed stocks for next years grow which will then be harvested resale puposes to help put us on the property ladder. It's not a get rich quick plan but more of a plan we believe in and are prepared to see it through to the end. We hope you can join us on this adventure and offer any advice where you can. We are all ears!

(I will include as many pictures as possibe that are relevant to the grow and a few that are in for giggles also) I love looking at pepper-porn of other peoples grow's, it is an excellent research method, so hopefully our pic's will inspire and help you all to get a better understanding of what we are doing.

If you see something we are doing wrong please shout out!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Plan of action
By having a 100% indoor grow season we will be able to control the enviroment in which our peppers are culivated in and with lots of hard work, cunning and lady luck..ooh and your advice!, we believe we will be able to grow stable, popular, tasty, hot, beautiful peppers to use for seed in the 2014 mega grow we ar planning.

Equipment
Seed soaking cups for an overnight saltpeter bath
BioBizz light mix organic seedling soil
At least 2 x agralan plug plant trainers
1 x growcube propagation tent (90cm long x 60cm wide x 60 cm tall)
1 x Lightwave T5 4 bulb grow light (24w per bulb, 96w total, 6,600 lumens blue)
1 x Petnap speedy seeder heat mat (49cm x 49cm - 40w)
Both sets of fingers crossed!

If seeds/we are successful, once grown enough, the next step we will be using the following:

1 x self built nursery grow cabinet made from the spare wardrobe (see pics of flat)
1 x Lightwave T5 8bulb grow light (54w per bulb, 432w total, 33200 lumens super blue)
8 x 7cm square black plant pot tray sets - these hold 28 pots in each tray

(Pot measurements are - External = 72x72x71mm (with lip), Internal = 66x66mm (Top), Internal = 49x49mm (Bottom)Tray measurements are - External = 562x315x50mm (with lip), Internal = 552x305mm, Internal = 58x58x50mm (compartments) Volume - 0.2 litres (per pot))

Once plants are big enough they will be going in to the main crop tents, we will have 3 tents in total.

1 x 2.8m long x 1.4m wide x 2m tall.

2 x 65cm wide x 165cm long x 180cm tall.

The largest tent is where we will be growing the widest selection of plants. Our aim is to try and grow approx 195 dwarf or short plants in this tent. Then the 2 smaller tents will have approx 20 - 40 larger super hot's in them.

We have designed a self built plant pot system using heavy duty rubble sacks, bamboo, plastic storage boxes, wire tyes, florist wire and fishing line. A lots of praying!!

The pots we have designed are going to be 10cm squarred at the top, going down 80cm in lenght to a 1 litre approx 9cm round plant pot attached and sealed by tyes. The shape of the pot/sack will be held in a cylindrical shape by the fishing line wrapped around it and the florist wire is used to keep the shape of the top of the pot whilst keeping it open. The bamboo canes will be used the create a cross hatch grid effect frame where each pot rests/hangs in.

The pots will be in grids of 15 and will sit in the plastic storage trays/boxes
The purpose of the round flower pot attached to the bottom is to allow the storage boxes to be flooded when watered and to leave enough flow space around each pot base for the water to be siphoned up by the roots and soil. Hard to explain and pictures will show better, but I think and hope it will work. Will have to try to see! The pots have been designed like this to maximise the space of the tent and allow loads of room for downward root growth. The pots will hold 9 litres of soil this way! Hope that is going to be enough be plant?

We will be using 3 x Lightwave T5 8bulb grow light (54w per bulb, 1296w total, combo of red and blue bulbs) to light up this tent. These light are only 60mm in height and have been choosen to leave max space for the plant to grow from the top of the pot to approx 12 inches away from the light. The tent is 200cm in height, the pots and tray total 92cm in height, minus 6cm for the light, minus 30cm light space means approx 70cm for plant growth. We will be training plants will a huge grid wall we have already. The main tent will look like a SCRog grow.

Not 100% sure on what fan we are using yet but will be a 5inch fan located in the top right pulling air from a passive vent flap on the bottom side of the tent.

That's enough for now I think, plus fingers hurt from typing. Here's a few pic's to see where everything is going. We have a separate studio apartment that we use for our online business which has kitchen bathroom and large open space so this will be taken over by our pepper grow soon.

Please feel free to offer any advice as it is much needed. I will post up some more pics and our list of seeds we are growing tomorrow for you all to view.

Thanks

(excuse the mess - been playing around with the selving to make space)

First lot of seeds are now out of thier soaking and into zip bags, wrapped in bubble wrap, placed in a cardboard sleeve and now sitting under the sky box. Warmest place for them at the moment as the heat mat has still not arrived. Hopefully it will be here soon so when/if they germinate they can go in the propagators sat on top of the mat.

Swapped the first t5 light over to the cupboard and another turned up today so have got both them in place now. Made a backet for them to sit on so can be easily slid in/out if needed.

Heres a couple of photos with the lghts on half power

Got a plinth in there also so when the flats go in, they can be raised up to the lights easily rather than messing about trying to lower the lights..way too much hassle doing it that way!

Other news put some more seeds in for a soak, probably going to have these in the main tent but not 100% sure yet. Well the bird eye demons are going in that's why I have soaked some many of them but not sure about the aji crystal and hab white yet. Was planning on sticking with smaller plants, something like a load of thai peppers.

Soaking are:
Aji crystal - 2
Habanero White - 2
Bird's eye Demon - 10

Thanks
Pete

Just brought some more seeds from chileseeds.co.uk, hope they arrive soon and work out well as never ordered anything from them before.

On it's way are:
10 Trinidad choc Douglah
10 Mexican pequin
10 Naga king
10 Nagalah
10 Datil
10 Maya pimento

Going to soak, germ and pot all of them. The successful ones will be going in the main tent, so we now have a start to the final main tent list. Wuhoo!

That's a serious grow-op!
I would look for HPS/MH lights for the big tents, with such heights and big plants you will probably need more light penetration at some point.

Good luck

Datil

Been having a look at some HPS lights today so think we will be going down that road now. Maybe 3 or 4 600w grow lights in the largest tent and 1 or 2 600w lights in the smaller tent. Overkill? Got a deal for around £60gbp per light so hope the extra investment will make the difference.

That sounds about right for those sizes of tents. 60GBP/each is a pretty good deal on lights!

The Aji crystal's, Hab white's and Bird's eye demon's are now out of the soak and in th warmth with the others under the sky box.

And into soak are 10 Patio fire's which are now on the final list for the main tent. So that list so far is:

Patio fire
Bird's eye Demon
Trinidad choc Douglah
Mexican pequin
Naga King
Nagalah
Datil
Maya pimento

Got space for another 5 varieties, so any suggestions for this tent?

The heat mat finally arrived today so when/if the seeds germ atleast they will now be toastie warm in the soil. Hopefully not long now :P

Yeah I thought it was pretty reasonable considering that includes the reflector, bulb, ballast, height adjusting rollers and a 6meter power cord. I think we will be buying those. Going to try to see if can do a bit of a deal with the shop though as will be buying like 6 lights in one go. Fingers crossed!

Leaving a space in the main tent for the competition seeds but will still have room for another 5 varieties, any suggestions? lol
Cheers Brian

Hi All,

Today's update:

Patio fire's all out of soak and into warmth with others now.
The heat mat has been put in place and swithced on.
The hygrometer arrive for the cupboard some have that set up and will see what the temps drop down to tonight then I can adjust the set up in the morning. The hygrometer is pretty neat, it will save the min and max temps in reads so will be able to see how cold it got last night or how hot during the day, saves less time checking it every hour. It also has a probe on it so it can take the inside and outside temps min/max, so I have it set up inside the cupboard and reading the room temp aslwell. Will be interesting to see the difference in the morning. And it was only £6gbp - bargain!

With the heat mat I think I'm going to put a sheet of polystyrene underneath it and a towel over the top of it then the flat on top of the towel. Hopefully this will keep the heat level across the whole surface. The heat mat is 120cm x 30cm and is 65w so it does heat up well but better to play it safe I think.

Decided to go with some poly pots in the main tent. They are very resoanble price - 100 for £9.95gbp. We went with the 6litre option so will see how we get on with them. Less work and much easier to move around, so compomised on pot size versus plant grow height and lamp dangle move.

The 10litre pots for the 2nd tent also arrive so they are in there now just awaiting the super hot's in a few weeks. These were £12.99 for 20 so not too shabby again.

Brought a pack of 16 different varieties of thai peppers some you can get easy over here and some I have never heard of so I think the remaining spots in the biggest tent will be filled with these now. Will update the final grow list when they arrive or may be sooner as I love updates. lol

Thats about it for today so heres some pics to sign off with.

Thats LOT of light and also heat to dissipate, what are the exact dimensions of the two tents?

The biggest tent is 280cm long x 140cm wide x 200cm tall
The smallest tent is 165cm long x 60cm wide by 180cm tall

Not too worried about the heat as the room can get very cold plus both tents have loads of passive vents aswell as fan and power cord vents that can be fully opened. If worst comes to worst I can hitch a down open on either tent. Also as mentioned they have loads of fan vents so will be putting in an inline fan to each tent to get some airflow through the passive vents.

I was thinking for the big tent either 3 600w in a line going the lenght of the tent or 4 600w staggered 2 on each side and half of the tent.

The for the smallest tent either 1 600 in the middle or 2 600w turned in facing each other.

The more light the better but IMHO 2 x 600w in the big tent and a single 600w in the small with quality reflectors can be enough.
You can always add more later if needed.

Best of luck with your project!

Thanks Datil,

Might buy them in bulk anyway so we get the discount and then like you say can add them later if needed. Again it might be a try it and see thing. The lights will not be wasted anyway if don't use them this time round as can use them in future.

The only thign I was concerned about was just having 2 lights in the biggest tent will leave dark spots and I don't want to be moving the plants around all the time so might go with 3 lights and see how we get on. Decisions decisions. lol

Cheers Datil have a good weekend.

Merci Beaucoup Bodeen! It's get there still lots to do on it yet and must hurry as I think the seeds are going in the soil either today or tomorrow. Will keep the pepper porn flowing! Thanks for stopping by. Pppppeeeaacccee man! :P

Had a quick look at the seeds earlier and decided to put the in the soil in the propagators, they just weren't getting warm enough under the sky box and didn't want them to go moldy. So they are now all in the propagators and are set to go, most of them looked like they were about to sprout and if left another day then they would have, maybe!

Added the back of the cupboard back on now so reflects the light alot more. The top half is attached by some tacks and the bottom half is attached using magnets so comes off super easily when I need to go and say hello to them.

Check these out

The wife suggested using the other window sill in our living room to grow so more peppers so will now be growing ornamentals and thai on the window sills and just super hots in the tents. That being said went a brought a load of seeds from pepperlover.com

This is whats on the way:

7 Pot Chaguanas
Aji Panca

Bhut Jolokia Indian carbon
Bih jolokia
Bombay Morich
CollectionTrinidad Scotch Bonnet
Fatali
Habañero big sun
Red Fatali
Trinidad Barrackpore 7pod
Trinidad perfume
White Bhut Jolokia
Trinidad Congo Colorful Collection
Tobago Treasure
Trinidad Scotch Bonnet Brown
Wild Brazil
Trinidad Scorpion FG
ARIBIBI GUSANITO (PI 543203)
Black scorpion tongue

So will give 'em a go and see what grows!

Thanks

No sprouts yet  ...but would be surprised if there was as only been like 2 days! ...Come on...I hate waiting! lol

The temps are holding nice now so not worried about the conditions just need them to wake up and go now.

On the plus side..Some seeds arrived today from what we ordered last week so in the propagators went:

3 Datil
3 Nagalah
3 Maya Primento
3 Trinidad Douglah
3 King Naga Morich
2 Mex Pequin
1 Newmex Bailey Pequin - free gift with order so why not give it a go.

All went straight in the soil this time instead of having a soak, see if that makes any difference as the soil has now been pre warmed for them for the last two days.

Decided to buy yet another tent- thought go big or go home! It's the same size as the second tent 165cm x 60cm x 180cm and it is going on the back wall where the table is. Brought a couple of contact relay timers so now able to have the room for the 3rd tent. Which is great as we can now grow even more. Wuhoo!

Thanks

Houston! We have lift off!

Checked on the ladies this morning and found these little cuties saying hello

Bird's eye Demon
DSCN0640.JPG

Moruga Scorpion
DSCN0636.JPG

Have moved them up now on to the plinth and given them the extra light setting so hopefully they will be good to go. The Moruga scorpion looks like it's bum is on fire because it is growing at a faster rate then Jack's beanstalk. Hopefully a sign of good things to come but not counting me chickens just yet as still have loads that haven't sprouted..yet! :P

So from dry seed to the photos above is 8 and 7 days..not too bad but could be better lol

At least we are now off and running with a couple just got keep them alive now..wish us luck :P

More sprouts today when checked this morning. What I thought was a Moruga scorpion is not (was reading the plan the wrong way :banghead:) it is actually a Khoricha jolokia.

So far we have sprouted:
Khoricha jolokia x 1
Choc Naga x 1
Royal black x 2
Bird's eye Demon x 7

Was hoping for more to have said hello yet but there you go..still time yet.
