Please help Identify this WILD pepper

WildPepper.jpg

I found this plant when clearing brush away from my neighbor's house. This is the first year for a pepper to be here to our knowledge. Is this a Wild pepper given to me by a feathered friend(a bird)???? No ripe pods yet, but the pods on it are only about 3/8 inch around.

Any info is appreciated!

Thanks

make sure it's not deadly nightshade!

nightshades can have various shaped leaves, so don't rely on that alone to ID the plant as a nightshade or not. Let it ripen if you can. Anything dark purple or black, do not eat and even if it's red, be very careful.

You could also take a branch to a local extension service or master gardener, they could help you ID it. Probably safer to do that than rely on us on the internet who can't really see all the details.

I am also growing Chili pequin. This is quite a bit different. I will post another pic in the morning with something to guage size. I will definately wait to ID this for certain before trying it out.
I am in Texas and we get quite a few wild species here. I would rather die from a superhot than a wild pepper anyhow!!!

I'm not familiar with tepins/pequins - do pods on those grow from places other than the axles? Most peppers I know only put out pods from the axles, and that plant seems to have pods growing from places other than the axles. This is the main thing making me think it's not a pepper.

Pequins are actually a little more pointy. Pretty similar in size, though. I was gonna say Tepin as well. But yeah, make SURE thats what they are! Hell, I wouldnt eat one either way! Get ya some seeds and make SURE what you're eatin'!

i think its a tepin because the pods are pointing upward and a longer stork compared with Jerusalem Cherry which has a rounder pod with short stork.

I am working on getting a better camera. Something to get focus at closer than a 12 inches to the plant. So, I don't believe I will be eating this one. I was just super curious because I know there are wild species around my area. Thanks to all who posted for the help. The varieties I grow will keep me alive. I like those odds better than experimenting with something that could be deadly!!
