in-ground question on in ground garden area

This was my first box style garden, I threw every leftover food scrap and rabbit poo in there for about 3 months mixed it up,

planted sweet potatoes and onions(I moved the onions last year), that was 3 years ago. it now produces about 20-30 pounds of potatoes every 6 months.
 
I know some that like to amend with sand and peatmoss. I use use pine bark. After amending the area with pine bark the water sinks very quik in the area. I would never buy topsoil but just work with the native soil.
 
Go get yourself a cheap spade shovel from Walmart and put on your heaviest boots. Even if you wind up building a raised bed, it won't hurt to break up the dirt below it as much as you can. Oh, and prepare for blisters :)
