Scorched 2015 Grow

Hello everyone (if anyone is even reading  :) ). I know I've started this a little late but I finally decided to get around to it. This is my very first year starting from seed and my first year with such a large grow. Over the past 15 years or so I've always ordered seedlings from CCN or gotten them from a nursery and only ever around 40 plants at the most. It was always jalapenos or habaneros until the Red Savina came along. I actually did grow 10 of those from seed when they were released. A few years later the ghost chile made its debut and things have just exploded since then. That was when I went from growing maybe a dozen plants to 30 or 40 each year. Have No complaints with CCN and always had a great experience and great plants that always grew true. While researching some plant issues last year I found this place and was hooked. Never knew so many varieties existed! CCN has a nice selection of super hots but when I started reading this forum I was just stunned at what was out there. So I decided this year I would grow from seed since I would be able to try all the varieties I wanted to try this way. Started buying sfrbs of pods and saving the seed, buying seed from awesome vendors (going to have an entire section just for Judy's varieties), seed trains and trading.

My setup is simple. Just t8 lights with 6500k bulbs and two shelving units. I had planned on using t5s at first but didn't realize the cost and since I needed so many lights just wasn't going to happen. I figure I'll replace a few lights per year with t5s. The t8s are doing a great job so I can't complain. I'll be growing in containers, and a couple of raised beds that I will soon be putting together. I'll probably have a few in the ground as well, we'll see how it goes once plant out gets here.

Unfortunately pics in the glog won't be anything great. I'm using a shitty old Dell Studio laptop that has issues when I try to hook a digital camera up to it. So I'll be using my Ipod touch to upload pics since it connects to the laptop with no probs. Enough with the rambling. Here's my grow list:

I think that's just about everything. A few plants are unlisted and will remain that way. Thank you to those of you who were awesome enough to share seeds with me. Really excited about this year's grow. Thanks for reading!

Don't make me drive down there, get those plants in the ground!

Finally have everything together. Shade cloth has arrived and the trailer I needed to put everything on is now here and ready to load up. I'm a bit behind but the plants are much bigger than the plants I usually get from CCN. And now is about when I have them delivered and starting to harden off so I'm actually not far behind compared to past years. Just hope everything fits on the trailer since it's shorter than the one I usually use. Better than nothing though. A little bit heavier as well so by the time I'm done pushing and pulling it into the garage twice each day for a couple weeks I should get a good workout lol.

The beds are filled and ready. I've added Neptune's Harvest crab shell, bone meal, and Tomato Tone to the 60/40 topsoil/compost mix. I'm going to add a bag of greensand this weekend. I have a bag of bat guano I might add but not sure if it's needed. Was also going to add blood meal but again not sure if needed.

The neighbor across the street was supposed to disk my 30' x 30' plot but it's been two weeks and still no action. So Monday I'm renting a 16" Mantis Tiller. Seems to dig deeper than one of the giant rear tine tillers. I also don't have a truck to pick up a full size tiller. The 16" Mantis is for big gardens and will dig 10" deep so should work great. $50 for an entire 24hrs isn't bad. Going to add mushroom compost to the growing rows and then cover the entire area with 20 year DeWitt landscape fabric. I got a 5' x 250' roll from greenhousemegastore when I ordered my shade cloth.

So things have been going ok. A bit behind but getting there. The trailer I need to use to harden off my plants was delayed. It's here now and the kids have been kicked out of the house.

Rented a 16" Mantis tiller to do the 30' x 30' area. Broke it after 15 minutes of use. The outside blade set sheared right off. Took it back and they returned some of my $. Luckily the damage was covered since not my fault. Neighbor finally made it over and disked the area. Raked out a lot of the weeds/roots left behind since most of it is heavy field grass. Wasn't happy with how deep it disked so decided to rent a full size tiller. Delivery and pickup costs are ridiculous. Cost $60 to rent for an entire day but cost me $120 for delivery and pickup. Thing was a beast though and did a great job. Anyway tilled the heck outta the area and am in the process of working 9 cubic yards of mushroom compost into the soil.

The raised beds are mostly done. Just need to put down the weed barrier. Consists of the topsoil/compost 60/40 blend, greensand, blood meal, tomato tone, Neptune's harvest crab shell, some peat moss, a few bags of Black Gold potting mix, and a bit of the mushroom compost. Still haven't decided whether I need to add the bat guano or not.

The plants should be fully hardened off by this weekend which is when I'll probably be done getting the 30 x 30 done.

I started a few seeds because why not lol. It started when I was lucky enough to snag a few true Judy chocolate brain strain seeds from John Ford last week. I just had to put a couple in the dirt. These have been at the top of my wishlist for a long time. Figured I'd start a couple more along with them.

But some of us WANT to see pictures of dirt! Oh well. I'm sure it's gonna look spectacular once you get all those plants in.
Your plans for soil sound awesome. I can't wait to see what all your plants can do with it. I'm sure it will be colorful with all those varieties you're rockin'!

Superhot Beast description from Jim Duffy on FB- Yes people the "Superhot Beast" created by Peter Merle. An extremely hot Scorpion Cross that may or may not burn more than the Reaper. You grow it and be the judge! Peter is the owner of Semillas la Palma.

Peter might be able to provide more info. He's a member here. THP name is semillas.

I'll try and take some pics of the beds tomorrow.

The ground plot isn't great soil to start. Well I've never had it tested so I don't know for sure. My grandfather used to do a big vegetable garden in part of it for years but for at least the past 20+ years it's just been a place for field weeds to grow. I don't think he ever worked anything into the soil but I could be wrong. The soil is pretty gray and seems maybe a bit sandy. It's not that great dark color that good ground is. I'm having 5 more cubic yards of mushroom compost coming tomorrow for a total of 8 cubic yards in the 30 x 30. According to what I've read an area like that should get around 14. They say you should work in 3" of compost. I'll add more next year. Will probably be yard waste compost just to mix it up a bit. It won't be getting anything else added but those plants will be fertilized with Dyna Gro Grow Formula. If the plants don't do very well i'll probably make more raised beds next year and use those.

That mushroom compost should do wonders for your soil. Last year I just topdressed my 25x15 garden with 2 yards and for me I had a very nice year. This year I tilled in another 2 yards and so far so good. The only issue you may run into is time. Hopefully you can get those plants into the ground soon. Good luck.

Here's the superhot beast.

SLP exclusively !! Extremely hot variety, which was selected by us from a cross of two super sharp Capsicum chinense The plants were in the Next Culture uniform, yet it can still lead to variations in the fruit shape.

I had a mystery cross last year from another vendor of what was supposed to be chocolate habanero and the pods looks almost identical to these.

Just got my 4th Jim Duffy FB special in the mail. Two very cool varieties in this one

Mushroom compost was delivered today. Has been raining for the past few days so shoveling wet compost has been fun. Need it to dry out some so I can till it in and put down the weed barrier. I'll try and grab a pic tomorrow but it's not much to look at

Hey, Tony! I hope all is well with your grow. If I remember correctly, you are growing a brown naglah and it is growing purple-ish. You sent me some seeds and my plant is doing the exact same thing. The plant is a deep purple with green tinges. It's still budding, so I haven't seen the color of the flowers or pod shape yet. How is your plant coming along?

Dang those plants are prolific. Jim sure knows what he's doing. Very passionate at what he does. My Brains and Jigsaw's are the best looking plants in my grow for the second year in a row. All from Jim. Great genetics. Thanks for sharing

So haven't updated in awhile. I had some issues pop up which alone shouldn't have been an issue but they all happened back to back to back which has really delayed my grow. I'm not very happy with the back plot of about 300 plants. They're very small compared to what they should be this time of year. They stayed in solo cups too long. Some of the plants have quite a few pods even though small so that's something. Just hoping for the best.

The front raised beds at least are looking good. Plants have some of the thickest stems I've ever grown. Bigger around than my thumb on some. Leaves are huge as well. Think there's around 128 in the two raised beds. I planted everything I was looking forward to the most in these beds.

So time will tell where things end up. Thanks for reading

These are the Naglah Brown I grew from seeds harvested out of a pod Chris Phillips sent me. The plant grew with dark/purplish tinted leaves and stem. Chris thinks it might be a cross. The leaves have lightened up some and the pods are looking like Naglah Brown so far. Maybe whatever the cross was (if it is a cross) it only affected the plant itself. Not sure

These are supposed to be Douglah x Trinidad Scorpion Butch T Chocolate CP. From the pics I've seen this plant is not correct. Pods are turning red and doesn't have the correct shape. I'm really hoping this is a fluke because I've got 9 of these planted in the raised beds and these were one of the top varieties I was really excited about this year. All seeds came from the same pack. I've got my fingers crossed and breath held because if these are not the right seeds I'm going to be crushed. They weren't cheap either. I know mistakes happen but I really hope this one isn't. Time will tell
