They finally arrived ... + some of my plants.

I originally ordered a collection of seeds to grow over winter from the UK a month ago, but they ran out of the Congo Black, after waiting for three weeks for them to get them, I just decided to ditch the Congo Blacks (as I already had Chocolate Habaneros coming) and get some Tomato seeds instead, which I am actually really really happy with.

So ta-da,

seeds.jpg

That is what 50 quid (£43 to be precise -- $90AU) worth of seeds look like :P After I realised just how many seeds I had I was kind of overwhelmed, but figured I would plant half now and half in spring, as I want to get a few mother plants grown over winter.

We have;

Superhots ::

Bhut Jolokia
Chocolate Bhut Jolokia
Orange Bhut Jolokia
Trinidad Scorpion
7 Pot
Fatalii

Others ::

Khorika Jolokia
Naga Jolokia (Annuum, Not the Chinense Superhot)
Chiltepin / Tepin
Tabasco
Chocolate Habanero
Espelette Basque AOC (+ Some powdered Espelette Basque)
Yellow Mushroom
Jamys (They looked cute on the website, bought it cause I thought why not?)

+ Ring of Fire (Free)

Along with two packs of tomato seeds; Black Krim & Gold Medal.

Customs opened the package, but did not open the three paper packages inside. I can only imagine what they must have thought, as when I opened the package all I could smell was that amazing Espelette Basque powder, in fact, my whole house smells like Espelette Basque and I haven't even opened the little plastic package. It really does smell quite nice and I am happy I ordered it, I have yet to taste it.

I guess the one I am most looking forward to growing is the Scorpion (Closely followed by my tomatoes), and I am hoping to get up a good quantity of plants (via cloning the winter mother plants) for next season (Starting in about 5 months). But funnily enough, even though it is Autumn, we are still having really hot days like summer, my plants are still growing and fruiting.

I got my first ripe Naga Jolokia pod, I am leaving it on the tree to hopefully get hotter (as it gets more ripe). It is a full size beautiful pod, and I have two other pods which are ripening, but they are about 3/4 of an inch long, mini nagas :P

naga.jpg

And a picture of my Scotch Bonnet plant; the lack of heat in the pods leaves me a bit disappointed, but it made for some nice Jerk sauce. Is this normal? It has not been pruned, but compared to my Naga which is like a Christmas tree, ie / shape, this actually looks like a miniature tree.

An awesome plant never the less :P

I also have a lot of other plants out in the garden besides the Naga Jolokia and the Scotch Bonnet ... 1 Bih Jolokia (Which is a 1" tall seedling), 4 Dorset Nagas (2 of which are 2" high and are being given away to friends, the others are a foot high), 4 Savinas (already gave 2 away), 2 Red Habs, 2 Choc Habs, 2 Piri Piri, 2 Aji Pineapples 6 Jalapenos, and 10 different types of ornamental/less hot chillis. All are fruiting ... good times ...

I have a huge garden which I am getting ready for next season ... yeah ... can't wait :P

I thought you would enjoy ... :D

Looking good. You're not missing anything with the Congo black, they are usually the same as Chocolate habs, just a different name.
Enjoy the D'espelette powder, its one of my favorite mild peppers for powder, great stuff.

Nice seeds and beautiful plants! And remember, that naga ripening will turn a darker, almost blood red when fully ripe. Sure it would still be a ripper when orange, but the final color change will insure full heat and fully developed seeds and flavor.

Enjoy!

Actually the ripe colour would depends on what type of naga the Naga jolokia is, and many would say the heat peaks before fully ripe(less sugars)

I stand corrected! My only experience was with Bhut Jolokia, so if this is a bih or naga morich, I guess I'm clueless here.

Nah nah, its a Bhut :) Not a Bih or a Morich.

That photo was taken a few days ago, and I won't dare let anyone go near it until it is a really nice colour, and even then, they aren't touching it, it's going in my mouth. :D

This will be edited later with pictures ... comp problems at the moment ...

On the 25th of April we planted

6 Bhut Jolokias
6 Chocolate Bhut Jolokias
6 Orange Bhut Jolokias
6 Fataliis
6 7-Pots
6 Trinidad Scorpions
3 Jamys
3 Yellow Mushrooms
3 Black Krim Tomatos
3 Gold Medal Tomatos

On the 27th of April (Day 2)

3 Black Krim Tomatos sprouted
1 Gold Medal Tomato sprouted

On the 4th of May (Day 9)

2 Fatalii sprouted
3 Orange Bhut Jolokias sprouted
2 7-Pots sprouted
1 Trinidad Scorpion (semi-sprouted/hooked)

On the 5th of May (Day 10)

I killed an Orange Bhut Jolokia ... there was a huge airpocket under the seedling that I didn't notice, so when I watered it, it disappeared down the hole. Too much damage was done to it and it died, I was disappointed but little did I know ...

On the 6th of May (Day 11)

1 Fatalii sprouted
1 Orange Bhut sprouted
2 7-Pots sprouted
1 Yellow Mushroom sprouted
1 Jamy sprouted

On the 7th of May (Day 12)

1 Orange Bhut spouted
2 Naga Jolokias sprouted
1 Gold Medal Tomato sprouted

-------------------------------------

Running Total

2 / 6 Bhut Jolokias
0 / 6 Chocolate Bhut Jolokias
5 / 6 Orange Bhut Jolokias (1 died).
4 / 6 Fataliis
5 / 6 7-Pots
1 / 6 Trinidad Scorpions
1 / 3 Jamys
1 / 3 Yellow Mushrooms
3 / 3 Black Krim Tomatos
2 / 3 Gold Medal Tomatos

I have to admit I am quite impressed with the germination rates so far, with nearly all the Fatalii and Orange Bhuts sprouting in under 12 days. I am still waiting for the Chocolate Bhuts to sprout, and I do wish more Scorpions would have sprouted already (they are the ones I am looking forward to most).

My little Scorpion plant I have now has been through hell and back, it has yet to form a tap root, but has finally started to un-hook itself after 3 days. It got attacked by aphids (I am sitting here thinking how the f*** did 1 single flying aphid find my plants under lights in a cupboard no where near anything else, and then bear another 5 young!?), but not to worry, now the aphids are dead >:|

But I am a bit concerned about the lack of a tap root, basically the top part of the plant just came out of the seed and with no root. I was always lead to believe that the root came out of the seedling first, and then the plant itself, not the other way around ...

Strange, but should hopefully get a few more plants :) After all, I plant in batches, don't put all my seeds in one basket ... :)

Good work Taj...Must come round for a gander and to talk to youa about a big hydro set up Im planning on doing over winter with a mate. Wanna get together on the weekend maybe!

Yeah sure, I am up for it. You will have to give me a ring on the day, chances are I will be free.

I got another Trinidad Scorpion starting to hook at the moment, I am so happy, where are my chocolate bhuts!? :D

Those look great, i am patiently waiting to plant my first plant here, our last frost date is May 21st.

Hey

I ordered Choc Bhuts from them also. None germinated and when I was about to throw them out (bout 3 -4 months later)then I saw that 1 did. So I kept the others for another month and nothing.
Hope yours do better. Anyone else had same problem? If so did you get them from uk chile seeds or elsewhere?

I have 1 bhut jolokia plant thats taken, so i am really nursing this one along for the seeds later, and also only had 1 pepperoncini come up too...not sure why?

I had about 40% germination from Chileseeds. I think the website says around 50% from them. I think alot of people got pretty poor germination from them too, but worth the try to get a Chocolate couloured one.

Hey Taj, nice collection! Sure is costly buying overseas, luckily customs had a good day and they made it through!

Drop me a PM with what seeds you are looking for atm and ill see if I can help out ;)

Oh I didn't see that bit bout there germination! I was glad that I got 1 though  Just would have been better if I got more.
Do you know of anyone else that has a better rate of germination for the Choc Bhut or are they all like that?
Hey Micca we have made some of that beer again if you want to come over for one? Should be ready in a week or so.

I have been away but I am back now, I took my plants with me I didn't trust leaving them here for a week with the people I live with -_- ...

Two choc bhuts have came up now, I have a few scorpions, all the orange bhuts came up, 2 bhut jolokias and some other stuff. Not bad for a first round.

The seed tray which I left here was a bit dried out when I came back, how hard was it to just spray some water on it and leave the humidity dome on and not turn off the heater!? Sigh ... people wonder why I have trust issues ... Im still leaving them sitting there, I am about to plant my second generation bhut seeds that I grew myself, they are either going to be pure or are going to be crossed with Jamacian Scotch Bonnets, should be interesting to see.

I honestly don't know what else there is that I want to grow, perhaps except trying out a few hybrids. I wouldn't mind getting my hands on the rarer chillis such as Douglah etc, but that goes the same for everyone else on this board, everyone wants them and not many people have them, hence why everyone wants them.

You saw me at the competition, so I am kind of limited to growing superhots. :P Really, anything under a habanero heat level isn't worth my time or investment, except for really nice tasting chillis for jerky / powders, hence why I have the Espelette Basque. I grow Jalapenos but I go through them like water, I can just sit there eating them all day raw.

If you have any suggestions about good ones for jerky, or any other food cooking, feel free to tell me, and I will have a look into them.

Hey Taj, as you might have noticed I like the Hot ones too, that's why I specialise in the Superhots.
We will have to catch up sometime and have a beer and talk Chilli. Got a spare Morouga Blend(if interested) i'm sure you will like.
With Peppers for jerky, my favourites are Aji Umba, Naga and Trin Scorpion. But I am sure there are lots more.

Yeah mate, I would love to grab that Morouga off you, anytime you want to catch up just give me a bell, I'll pm you my phone number. If you give me about two weeks, I should have my garden finished and we can try get you, Scorpion + Wildfire over and I'll cook something up. The backyard is a bit worst than a warzone at the moment, I have 3 cubic metres of dirt that I have to find somewhere to take. Last time, got a fine off the council for "dumping" it on my verge, it was about an inch of topsoil that I smoothed out and you couldn't even see it after I finished ... bah ... but still got rid of 3 cubic metres :P

You made the jerky for Dave yeah? That is awesome stuff there mate, I need to grab some off you :P
