tsurrie's annums (and couple chinenses) grow 2014

So, here they are ... my babies... unknown Cayennes (someone in I.D. section says it's similar to Hot Portugal), Bolivian Rainbows, Goatsweeds, As chillies, Bolgarian Carrots and some non-hots even, for my wife and friends...

I planted the first seeds in late january, the next ones in the middle of february... and in about three weeks from now, they're going out... it all depends on the weather forecast...

for the last time... this years hottest is ... goatsweed.... but for next year I promised myself some superhots... moruga, reapers, bhuts..... whatever I'll decide to get by the end of the year... what do you think?

EDIT: I decided later to get two superhots this season and now I'm growing also Bhut Jolokia and Fatalii yellow ... will see by the end of the season if I need to go any hotter

Nice photos.  They're easy to look at.

Did you forget about fatalii when you said the goats are your hottest chiles?  [OK, rereading it looks like the hotters came later.]

Surprised to see the goats pendant rather than upright?

Does the "As" chile have a more expanded name?

those are my two Goatsweeds in 1,5 gallon pods ... a number of pods was at least twice as big by this time last year
goatsweedsaug141gal.jpg

Cayenne... a few rotten pods fell off .. but it seems to be doing fine
cayenneaug141gal.jpg

Bulgarian Carrots ... waiting for them to ripe so I can pickle them with those As chilis ... I bet it's gonna be a fine combination
bulgariancarrotsaug145ga.jpg

I aint gonna count them Bolivian Rainbow pods .. there's just to many of them... still no changing of color
bolivianrainbowaug145gal.jpg

and finally, my Adjoema in 5gal containter - planted a seed on 17th of April .... podding up
adjoemaaug145gal.jpg

these Adjoemas are gonna be more concentrated on next season... I'm planning of growing a few of them

thanks
I have a few different lenses, but the one that can really make a nice photo is too narrow-angled to get good up close photo (Nikon 35mm APS-C eq. approx 52mm if full frame) so I took these with the lens that got with the body ... cheap 18-105mm lens...

I have a few Goats plants, and most of them are pendant but some are upright .. go figure :)
I like them all, at least they're hanging there

I wish I knew about the "As chili" .. the guy that's selling seeds here in our country sells them only by that name and he's not the only one ... if anyone has any clue how it could be called, maybe this is not the real name at all ... I'm gonna send him an email to ask him about the origin

EDIT: yep .. the answer was ... it is a "hybrid F1 bullet type pepper" originally bought from ebay (damn!t), so ... that's that ... all we know now that it's a hot pepper and that it tastes good, where's the name from .. don't know
:mope:

put up a question in Pepper I.D. today about "As chili" ... I found a pepper named Apache that is very alike ... maybe there is a connection

While waiting on a ripe Fatalii, I was in the mood for something yelowish this evening ... so I gave a try at Bulgarian Carrot ... and I must say I found that this pepper's taste is climbing up the ladder since I first grew it... it is very crunchy and has a nice fruity taste with a little bitterness, a lot of sweetness and a nice mouth/throat burn. The heat can also be felt in the stomach.

bulgariancarrotsalsa01.jpg

this is quite a large chili .. but not the largest among the pods thats gonna be picked soon.... it is almost 9cm long and packs a lot of seeds

bulgariancarrotsalsa02.jpg

That I have to say after eating a half of that chili .. the other half I decided to put in a salsa I kinda threw together an hour ago.
I've used olive oil, a few different kind of tomatoes, half of green bell pepper, garlic, basil, rosemary and salt

bulgariancarrotsalsa03.jpg

minced Bulgarian Carrot and some peperoncinos from Italy my wife brought home the other day...

bulgariancarrotsalsa04.jpg

threw that in and when it dried some I kinda figured (lightheaded after a beer or two) .... why not add a little lemon juice .. .so I did that and now I have a little treat for a movietime

bulgariancarrotsalsa05.jpg

this turned out quite interesting .. but got to do it more often :)

I did a little picking today. A very modest one, but things are gonna get better soon. Today we have a storm coming, but it is supposed to be better after that one (damn I feel like I am lying to myself all summer long, heh).... oh well

from left .. As chiles, Cayenne, Bulgarian Carrots, Goat's weed, two dwarfy Bhut Jolokias (few first ripe pods) and some Bolivian Rainbow pods
harvest0131082014.jpg

those dwarfy Bhut's (the ones in focus) are the second and third pod from my Bhut Jolokia plant ... the first one was picked a couple of days ago ... and was my first taste of fresh Bhut Jolokia ... damn it was delicious ... but the heat was over the scale ... did not expect this kind of heat from such a little pod ... I guess I'm in for a treat when I try the standard sized one :):):)
harvest0231082014.jpg

that's it for today .. if all is right I'm gonna update soon with much more pod pictures... (ripe and picked I hope)
cheers (gonna eat that small one now) :fireball:

Well, my Bhut Jolokia's continues to ripe and I like the look of it more each day ... there are a few pods that I'll be picking tomorrow or the day after
bhutjolokiaripning1.jpg

already got some seeds dryin'.... for the next season and maybe some trading
this one in particular had a few seeds that are sure gonna go to trash (brown and sure not viable), but the pod itself was very "enjoyable"... huh
bhutjolokiaripning2.jpg

it was ... how can I paint you a clear picture.... "like drinking boiling water" .. maybe :):) .. but I did it and waited whole 10 minutes to cool off and then drink a zip of yogurt and had a piece of bread .... now I'm enjoying my victory with a nice cold one... had a really good endorphin rush I believe (for the first time)... felt someting in my fingers for a couple of minutes...
bhutjolokiaripning3.jpg

gonna keep in touch ... still waiting for Fatalii to ripen ..it's so damn slow

Oh, well, I am hungry now... Thank you.... :-)

Nice plants and pods, the Bulgarian carrots don't appeal me now (dunno why), but maybe will give it a try one day. I just wait for the next season to be able to grow some goat's weed (is this weed related with the other.... weed??? I feel a strong need to have it...).

:) you're welcome

Bulgarian Carrots are very good (fruity) and quite hot peppers ... you should try one

I don't know how Goat's weed got it's name, but I don't think it's related to any weed in particular :)
maybe you should try and smoke it :) :) :)

anyway, I can send you some more seeds soon ... pods are ripening

another harvest today ... before the storm comes   yup, another one

cayenne's on top, As chiles on right, Goat's weed in the middle, Bulgarian Carrots in the lower left and Bhut Jolokias in the lower right
harvest0909201401.jpg

Bhut, bhut, bhut, bhut.........
harvest0909201402.jpg

nom... nom.... nom..... ouch .. today my stomach feels it the most ... last one was all about the throat to ears kinda pain... :hot:
harvest0909201403.jpg

well, next I promise I'll post some pictures of my plants again ... Fatalii should be really beautiful when the weekend comes
c ya

hey all
Here's the update I promised for the weekend, but had to do it today... better late then never eh?

Major progress on the ripening last two days, it really helps there was less rain, higher temps and even a little sun.

Here is Bolivian Rainbow in the garden.... ripening slowly ... I'm not impressed with the flavor so I might not grow it next year, but it is a looker
bolivianrainbow15092014.jpg

on to the balcony plants ... they're doing fine considering all the bad weather
maybe they could use more feeding, but they're doing their thing

Goat's weed no.1

Goat's weed no.2

fatalii115092014.jpg

last but not least .... Bhut Jolokia
damn this sucker is hot.... hot hot hot.... had a few stomach problems the last time I ate a pod
bhutjolokia115092014.jpg

and for the last picture in this batch..... the whole glory of Bhut from down below....
bhutjolokia215092014.jpg

Houston we have peppers said:
Good looking plants, the Bolivian rainbow looks really nice, like how dense it is
yup, thanks, it sure looks nice but I don't like the taste at all, it's bitter, the heat comes immediately but don't last too long
they could be good for salsas and other sauces maybe ... will give it a try

Done some picking today...
picking01.jpg

Picked quite a few Bhut's, nine As chile's, only two Adjoema's, six first Fatalii's ever and a bunch of Goat's weed pods on the right
picking02.jpg

Gonna do some drying and pickling today... and off course, gotta try Fatalii for the first time (they sure look nice) ... maybe I'll post a picture of the pod I'll cut in half...
picking03.jpg

So yeah, that's the one I chose...
fatalii2009201401.jpg

The smell is indeed quite citrusy (but you know right away that you're dealing with a chinense)... I was not impressed by the taste, but it sure was better than a Bhut or Habanero.... I can see this pepper usage mainly in salsas and sauces... and on pizzas off course! I would't mind slicing it in a sandwich....
fatalii2009201402.jpg

so as previously mentioned, I did some pickling today .. yup, I was busy....
in the front left ones there is a secret ingredient .. s.l.i.c.e.d. B.h.u.t. :)
picklings20092014.jpg

in between picklings and all hot water baths, I needed a meal .. so I made pizza with Chanterelle's with a hint of rosemary and mozzarella... with a little basil on top... you gotta love these mushroom's... such a full taste of pizza, nom nom nom
pizza20092014.jpg

Prepared my first amount (next is gonna be bigger) of peppers to dehydrate.
Bhut Jolokia, Fatalii and some Bolivian Rainbows (these are so small that I'm wondering if it isnt for the best to I dry them all ?!??)
I'm gonna make some flakes to put on pizzas through the winter...
dehydrating23092014.jpg

how do you folks use flakes?
or are you making mostly powder from dried chiles?

Nice pods! I think in a couple of days will try my first Fatalii too.

How are you pickling the peppers? Need a balcan recipe :)

hey, thanks man :) I'm happy with the quantity of peppers this year, but if the weather was better ... I'd have much more

I think I pickle them in a very simple way ....I use a 2:1 ratio of water:vinegar....
I don't think this is a true balcan recipe .. but it's OK

lets see.... for 3 liter "soup" mix, I use approx.:

1l vinegar (9%)
2l water
60g salt
15g sugar
a bunch of whole black pepper grains (remain in the jars)
few garlic cloves (I take them out after cooking - I don't like how they get blue if you let them in jars)

I wash the peppers first, let them dry .... fill jars with as much of peppers as I can ... fill them with boiling "soup", close with lids and hot-water-bath them for approx. 5 minutes (water just up to the 1/3 of the height of a jar) and them let them slowly cool-off under the blanket over the night
---- never, ever had a bad jar of peppers ... they remain quite crunchy and last right to the next seson .. if I have enough of them of course
Tried my first homegrown Adjoema (a.k.a. Aji Umba) today ... nice tasty pepper with a good punch ... but not nearly as hot as Fatalii the other day :) I'd say half hot ... maybe a little more
adjoema2309201401.jpg

it packed just a few seeds, but the pod was nice and juicy and had a tender chinense aroma (delicate), it was also quite sweet ..  I think the pods from the supermarket (imported from Dominican Republic) were not as good as this one .. but that may be the result of not being so fresh
adjoema2309201402.jpg

definitely gonna grow a few of them next year
