windchicken 2015

It was from my own inaction that I missed so many of my awesome THP friends over most of last season…I will not lie, it's much more convenient to post pix—and do just about anything—on that other very popular social media site, but there's no place there to maintain a grow log…Those of you who have not fallen prey to that particular internet time-waster of which I speak and have remained loyal to THP have my greatest love and respect…I pledge today to maintain this glog throughout the complete 2015 grow season!

Last weekend (January 10 & 11) I sowed most of my C. chinense seeds: 4 x 18-cell trays, 72 x 3" wide cells. The sprouting medium is Fafard Super Fine Germination Mix. The light stand is Harris Seed's "8 Tray 2-Tier Combo", which includes a 4' x 2' heat mat and a light timer. New this year is a DeLonghi radiant heater to drive out the cold drafts in this spare bedroom. Everything else is the same as last year.

As far as varieties sown this year, I agonized over a couple of "dream" lists during the fall, and obsessed over a nice spreadsheet in the week preceding this sowing, but I couldn't settle on a firm "assemblage" of super hot varieties. So I waited until the last minute (after the soil was already in the trays) and went with my gut. This is what I sowed:

7 Pot Primo (pepperlover.com), 18
7 Pot Primo (Primo's Backyard Select) 9
Bonda Man Jacques x 7 Pot Yellow (F4), 9 (Spicegeist's wonderfully hot and flavorful marriage of 2 yellow Caribbean classics)
Baby Barrackpore (F3), 9 (my favorite of the 3 phenotypes of Spicegeist's Sonoran Chiltepin x 7 Pot Barrackpore)
NagaBrain Red (F4), 9
NagaBrain Chocolate, Tmudder Strain (F3), 9
NagaBrain Yellow (F2), 9

I finally started planting my DeSoto Parish garden today. Eight plants of 7 Pot Primo "Primo's Backyard Select:"

These are going to be great.  It's nice you're growing these two different types.  I have two little primo plants, well, one is a primo, the other I labelled as "probably primo" because it was a little off, so I wasn't sure.  Not sure if I'll pot mine up this year or not.

How is Bayou Bob doing ?

Lol, thanks Jamie! Bayou Bob has been threatening to take a nap in the shade tent... :P

It's been raining so much for the last couple of months that Bob hasn't been able to prepare (roto-till) his garden…Now he's saying he probably won't plant, leaving me with a forest of Primo plants and others that I don't know what I'll do with…This year the RCW "permaculture" beds have really paid off for me, because they were basically ready to go as soon as the weather got right. For basically ALL other gardeners around here, "no-till" gardening is an extremely tough sell, though. The old dudes around here all tell me I'm doing it wrong, and I should let them bring their tractors and "middle-busters" to fix my garden right….

Thanks Charles! The two Primo types came by a sort of serendipity. I thought Troy didn't have any seeds to share, so back in December I ordered several packets from Judy. After I already had stuff sown, Troy sent me several packs of seeds from his own garden, including the "Backyard Select." No way was I going to not plant those!  :P

I've got my fingers crossed that this will be the first generation of a homogeneous pod phenotype from the BMJxY7. Last year's f3 grow was pretty dang close, especially compared to the f3 NagaBrain Red grow, which was still throwing yellow pods! Right now I feel like the "Bonda_X" is the rock star of all my super hots….

Ain't just so!!! That, and everyone and his brother around these parts seem to be self-appointed gardening experts. Now, when I get the inevitable unsolicited advice, I just smile and say "Cool, I'll hafta try that!"

Gotta hand it to you Gary, you are one committed grower.  Since you've been stabilizing it, you may as well give it an easier name... F4 is getting closer to stable...

Wow, thanks so much Charles! I've been racking my brain for years for a better name for your wonderful pepper, but I just can't seem to come up with anything that doesn't sound contrived or overly cute…Maybe I should hold a contest here on THP…Free SFRB of fresh BMJxY7 pods to whomever comes up with the best new name for this killer yellow pepper.

Did you ever try growing the Mexican frutescens in the pic?

Charles, thanks again for that wonderful share! I air-dried all the "bird" type pods, and harvested seeds front the larger super hots, so I can still sow them….But no, I have yet to sow anything from that shipment except for, of course, the Chiltepin x Barrackpore and the CAP x Bhut….

Lavender of Provence, growing in one of my RCW beds. There are 10 of these, all started from seed.  :P

Beautiful raised beds ... picture perfect and your plants look really healthy .... are slugs and snails a nuisance or do you use beer traps

Thanks John! I've never had trouble with slugs or snails…There are plenty of other pests I must defend against, however….

My Primo bed just now: 17 plants. One bed down, 3.5 beds to go... :P

That's some serious plant growing skill Gary! I just want to sleep there and watch the stars in the celestial Primo heaven!

Wow, thanks Mike! I love that imagery. I believe that's the coolest compliment I ever got!

My DeSoto Parish garden at 6:30 this morning. In the shade tent are 7 Pot Primo, Mississippi Scorpion, Texas Pequin (SmiterQ var), Lumbre, and Carlos' Chile de Arbol. In Bed #1, on the left, are 7 Pot Primo. In Bed #2, on the right, nearest the camera (the taller, darker plants) are NagaBrain Yellow. The smaller, paler plants near the truck are NagaBrain Red:
