Thats how I always do it, cut back the roots and all the leaves in the fall leaving more or less just a large stump. If you give them light, they will have lots of new shoots in no time, or you can try to let them go semi-dormant for the winter

This plant was cut back to a bare stalk only a few weeks ago and its already loaded with new green growth

Thanx Potawie, Im just alittle chicken... need to be alittle more brutal with my fav` plants ;)! And that is a good looking bonsai potential !
