World Yawn-er, Cup

Unofficial rule #3: no posts edited after the start of the game will be honored. Just the way it is. If you have to edit it, do it before the game starts.

Go!

Supposedly more goals have been scored so far during this World's Cup ... still boring ... and games continue to be greatly influenced by flops ala Netherlands (aka the Flying Dutch Flopmen) v. Mexico. In a sport where hours can go by without any scoring, "acting" appears to be a major part of the game. Not saying futbol has a monopoly, but it seems more pervasive.

I would have started a topic but every time the World Cup was mentioned in the chat or status updates somebody couldn't help but just butt in with a "yawn" or "boring soccer" type comment.  It gets very frustrating and I figured half the thread would have been filled with it.  I'd rather talk about the sport I love most with those that want to engage in an active, intelligent, and polite/mature conversation about it.

The English Premier League is a very high paced league that is competitive and has a ton of talented players.  Watching it is what really turned me on to soccer nearly a decade ago.

Oh, and watching Arsenal play when they are on their game is exactly why it is called The Beautiful Game.  It's the soccer equivalent of porn.

That said, Germany is my pick to win it all but I'll root on the US as long as we're in it.

And just to be fun though the game has started, USA and Cameron off of a header from a corner

Well officially, this is an unofficial contest So it can't actually officially have any official rules. Therefore all rules are unofficial.
Unofficially

I bet it goes to shoot out and Howard scores the winning goal

BwaaBWAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaa!!!     GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAALLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

this is starting to get interesting

nevermind

I won't officially tell y'all to stay tuned, but unofficially there's a rumor going around that I might or might not do some sort of unofficial contest like this again during the next round. Or not. So to speak.

Nothing official of course, just a rumor. A rumor which I may or may not have started just now. Unofficially speaking of course.

Awesome! Great contest ;)

Unfortunately for me, I didn't see the topic until it was over and was going to pick the dude that would have made me a winner.
You might wanna check the post above this. Or you might not. It's all pretty unofficial. ;)

I've been watching the World Cup pretty closely this year, after not really caring all that much about soccer for a long time.  Of all things, playing the FIFA 14 video game is what renewed my interest in the sport for the first time since my teenage years.  Now I'm hooked once again and can't get enough of it.

I also don't really agree that the sport is boring to watch.  The strategy behind the game is actually quite entertaining, even if there aren't very many goals being scored.  The game is definitely much more fast paced than baseball and American football, by far.  And of course, every once in a while, you will see displays of greatness by certain teams/players.

Like the USA/BEL game, to give an example, it was very much a one-sided affair with Belgium getting the vast majority of shots on goal.  But Tim Howard shined for 90+ minutes to keep the game scoreless.  If it wasn't for his historic goalkeeping the other night, that game would've ended up being a complete rout.

Now as for my predictions for the quarterfinals, I think Germany will win a close match with France, Colombia will upset Brazil, Belgium will eviscerate Argentina's weak defense, and the Netherlands will win their match with Costa Rica.  As of right now, I am expecting Germany and the Netherlands to meet in the finals.

Very well said!

As for predictions, GER will beat FRA, Argentina will play a good one but Belgium will, like you said, have no problems with Argentina's backs.  Colombia will beat Brazil in extra time.  BUT, Costa Rica will pull off the upset against NED.  I have faith in CR, they have been playing amazing.
