Bhut Jolokia question

The first post I included a reply to links on how to grow peppers. In that link it said the best and easiest way to grow seeds is by using a heated jiffy pot greenhouse. I even recall reading a post you made that said you never use jiffy pots, but when I asked what you use and you never replied so I went out and got a jiffy pot and almost all of my seeds sprouted in 3-4 days.

thats really quick !

what are you feeding them ? steroids ?

Jiffy pots and RO water and light is all I used. I actually had a lot of problems because I wasn't expecting them to sprout for weeks so wasn't ready for them and had to leave them in the pots for a week so they ended up being long and thin, but I now have them under MH light and they are getting very bushy.

lets see some pics;)

My plants that i started in jiffy pots were stunted as well, ist as if the roots find it hard to break free from the pot.

I noticed that also, so I took off the mesh that surounds the jiffy pellet and all the other chillis grew alot better!!!

i have some stunned plants as well. i started them from late jan to mid feb and now some are only inch tall. my only guess is that i kept them too cold when they were young.

I had some seedlings that were too cold when they were young as well. I'm not sure if it permanently stunts them, I think they just grow very slowly when cold. They will probably take off when they finally get outside.

they are outside but I have moved all my babies to the front side of the house now (sunny side). Also my wife is going to fertilize them nitrogen fertilizer dont now if its the fish stuff or from another source.

So jiffy may be good for sprouting, but no good after that? Fair?

I may try them for the harder to sprout varieties. My white habs never did sprout.

WHAT'S IN YOUR POOP?????(;) tags, lol)

I kinda hate using Rockwool cubes, but I found they're unbelievably efficient in holding the right amount of moisture needed for sprouting and then you've got all these possible growing methods available.

jiffy pots are acidic, they tend to stunt root formation.
your plants are slow because they have no/low amount of roots growing...
try this. let dry out some, then one time leach with
ph 7 water only{distilled},then let dry out some.
the roots grow slower in a wet medium and faster in a dryer medium.
my bhuts require little nutrient once they begin to fork.
hot peppers like dryer mediums.
also ck for any pest problems, nats, mites, aphids, all can disease a plant and make it slow down or even die from disease.

good luck man.

Gracias Pablo, your the man. :) there are no critters at all. I think the whole thing results from using Jiffy.

It's high in nitrogin, which is what you need right now.

So I have special fertilizing pellets for peppers and tomatoes which are to work into the top of the soil and are for long-term use (once a growing season) and liquid pepper and tomatoe fertilizer which is added to the water and used every two weeks. Which one is best to use now?

I guess so, but all you really need is moisture for sprouting so most any moist mediums would work for that but even paper-towels are better than jiffys in my opinion

There may be some confusion in terms here...

I've had pretty good luck sprouting seeds in Jiffy Pellets, but never used the Peat Pots... ;)

I Agree with the moisture bit; seeds can get drowned or too dry in Jiffy's rather easy if ya ain't careful. I mostly use my pro-mix to start stuff now. Plus, it saves buying more stuff. :)

Not sure if Jiffy pet pucks are the problem entirely. That's the only thing I used and I had over 90% of my seeds sprout in a few days. I did however remove most if not all the peat puck and the net when I transplanted them about a week after they sprouted. This is my first time growing and when I pulled them from the trays a lot of the peat broke off or fell off and I didn't bother reusing it so after I transplanted them they had only a small portion of the peat puck on them if any at all. I guess that may have helped instead of just picking up the whole puck and transplanting it that way.
