Harry's 2012/2013

With Spring officially arriving I have kicked off the season a couple of seeds from a Red Rocoto pod that found its way to me. The seeds are currently soaking in distilled water after being dipped in H2O2 solution for a few minutes.

Many of the plants from previous season remain. The vast majority of the mature non C. Pubescens plants have not regrown thus far. As of Friday I have one Not Locato (plant #2) in bloom with the other (plant #1) developing buds. Today marks the first day an orange Rocoto plant in the garden has re-entered bloom.

That's right... we're in Spring now. You wouldn't think so up here. The last couple days have felt more Winter than actual Winter did!

Out of curiousity, does soaking with distilled water have any benefit or is it just preference?

Good luck with the season, mate, and hope it's a bumper one!

(And no more ending up with them NOTs! ;))

The first two Spring days were warm though here. It's a little chilly at night though.

I figure seeing as I have attempted to sterilise the outside of the seed using H2O2 solution I may as well soak them in something sterile. I'm not particularly fond of the tap water here.

Time will tell if the success of last season can be repeated with the same combination of potting mix and fertiliser.

Makes sense.

What H2O2 dilution do you use?

Bonda Ma Jacques has made the list as one of the varieties I will start this season. I sowed the two Red Rocoto seeds into individual 10 cm pots.

Hopefully i will be joining them with the pod porn lol...

Here's one I prepared earlier:

Biggest Manzana Yellow (Orange) Pod

I treated, soaked and sowed one Canario seed and one Sukanya/White flowering C. Pubescens seed earlier today.

Not Locato #2 had four or five tentatively set new pods as of the last time I checked.

My Aji Amarillo, Aji Omnicolor and Brazilian Starfish plants have new growth.

Good luck with the new season, harry! Nice to see new starts while most of us are nearing the end of the season :)

Thanks, it's been a slower start to the season due to the cooler weather than last season. There are no sprouts to report as yet.

I do though have a few more over wintered plants now active:
  • Biquinho
  • Caribbean Red
  • Inca Red Drop
  • SB TFM (plant #4)
Pruning the SB TFM (plant #4) has appeared to help.

Not Locato #1 is now in bloom and has its first tentatively set fruit.

I still have no sprouts to report. The Not Locato plants are going strong with no signs of flower drop.

Additions to the active plant list per an inspection yesterday:
  • Bahamian Goat Pepper
  • Beni Highlands
  • Trinidad Scorpion (plant #1)
I uprooted and reused the potting mix from Limón plant (SP#2). I sowed 7 seeds straight from a pod of that plant into the same pot.

Still no sprouts :( I hate the waiting and not knowing whether to give up on them and start new ones or not. I guess pubes take a bit longer.

I hate the waiting and not knowing whether to give up on them and start new ones or not.

I've started new ones thinking that the original one's ain't going to do anything....but still leave them germinating too. Then what happens is the new ones sprout really fast, but then the one's you've given up on then sprout 2 months later!

I sowed one more Red Rocoto into each of the two pots today after soaking them overnight. I wasn't able to find the existing seeds in the pots. I also started a couple more seeds from a different pod in a zip lock bag. The majority of the seeds appear smaller than I would expect of a C. Pubescens after seeing seeds from my own pods.

At this point of last I already had fruit set from over wintered non-Rocoto plants. There are tiny flower buds developing on the one Caribbean Red plant that has survived past its second winter. I don't expect fruit set on it though as it is rather barren foliage wise.

Additions to the active plant list:
  • Aji Cristal (mature plant)
  • Aji Cristal (immature plant)
The immature Aji Cristal plant has been active for some time. I found and eliminated aphid outpost on it this week.

Tracking wise it is easier to sow them into new pots. In this instance though I'm trying to save on potting mix until I find a decent supply.

Going to grow some Aji Cristal this year. If I ever get finished with the chinenses and move onto the annuums that is. Have you gotten many pods from yours?

Chances are the small 3 L pot limited the number of pods the plant yielded last season. I started a fresh plant in autumn with the idea of seeing how this variety would do in a larger pot this season.

Aji Cristal plant last season

The pot diameter of 18 cm should give you an idea of scale.

Megamoo, I'll add that the plants scaled well to pot size considering the Aji Cristal giants you can see on Fataliiphoto.net.
