Karoo 2018/19 Glog African Adventure

Hi everybody.
Starting early this year . i just can't help myself, first frost hits and all i can think about is germinating a few seeds.

Germination:
In small pots with coco coir/compost 50/50.
In insulated container with heat mat .
Temp 28-30 C.

Seedlings:
Will stay in small pots , fits in trays , easy to move . For about 3 months.
I have a small , wooden grow box/cabinat with cfl lights.

Grow area:
two areas under 40% shadenet/birdproofing .
Biggest area, two one meter high raised beds , filled with 90% pure compost
Second area , large containers partially buried in the ground to keep them cool.

Soil:
germination , 50/50 , cococoir/compost
after that 90% compost with added  ash , spent coffee grounds , fine eggshells etc.
Compost is my own , from garden cuttings , leaves and branches , just left in a hole in the ground for at least 2 years.

No added nutes . The year I am going to experiment with sheep droppings from my Brother-in-law'sfarm. Real 2-5 year old droppings from the shaving shed.

Stay tuned , pics will follow.

Overwintered twice by accident. left out to die under shade net against a north (sun ) facing wall . Started to grow out each spring .
I hate to think what might happen if you actually
tried to formally OW that monster! Any plant that
refuses to die should be given a long life!

Carry on, brother!

I have a few late starters that are my candidates to overwinter.
Aji Charapita
Rocoto Puerto Rico
Rocoto Guatamala
Rocoto Red

My first hairy plants and first purple flowers. Can't wait.

My Dedo de moca with pods.
I harvested just in time. This is my only pepper plant not under cover and I had a visit from my arch enemies , the African mouse bird. These guys come in flocks of 15-20 and can clean out a pepper harvest.

No shit, Jacques, waste the bastiges! I have a problem with chipmonks, both in my tomatoes and my chokecherry grove. Italy came up with a solution I like to call the "Benelli Nova". Works like a charm....Uh, unless you live in a densely peopled area.

Hey, you gonna LOVE ya the pods from those purple blossoms!! :onfire:

Thank you , i started to leave the closest window open so my cat can get them.

I just had my biggest fresh Aji Amarillo as a after dinner snack.
Wow ! My new favourite snacking pepper . Thick flesh , sweet and tasty.
I will now have to start experimenting with the rest of the harvest.

Nice big plants good.............net forced open would be bad! Also, there is way too much greenery in your glog...........How about you popping over and we can sit under the umbrella by the picnic table and talk it over.

And this is before last nights 4 inch snowfall!!!

Great year you're having! Especially with the 'Amarillo's taking over the garden. I have 2 going for this year. I love them.

Those Pubes won't like the frost. They die like the  rest when it gets too cold...I grow them here, and they like the shade of the killer heat we both have. And most definitely will do better in the fall to early winter in our climates.

Those pubes will be nursed like babies from now till September.

We are having a hot March , helping peppers and fruit to ripen.

My 3 year old Dedo de moca is pumping out pods at about 15 per week.

Pomegranates are about a week away from harvest. I have 30 trees and these will be gifts , eaten fresh , juiced and used in sauces.
