Yelanfam Farms 2019 GLOG

This year I decided I wanted to bulk up my garden and turn it into a hopefully marketable garden. I've bought a rack and lights, seed trays, seed cells, dirt, seeds, weed barrier, shade cloth, and probably more stuff I'm forgetting.

I've probably been given or traded for around half of my pepper seeds. One great person on reddit sent me a huge pack or seeds and I am forever thankful for. A few others on reddit sent me a couple as well. I offered them hot sauce that I made and is finally ready to ship this week. I got here on THP a little late this year, but all ready I have made a few trades with some great people.

I have bought from White Hot Peppers, Lawrence Family Farms, Burpee, Baker Creek, Sow True Seeds, MIGardener I'm sure I'm forgetting some other places.

My plan is to do rows of 25 feet, and have 4, 25 x 25 foot blocks. Most of that peppers, the rest tomatoes cucumbers and beans. I'll also have a bigger section for corn and melons including the Bradford Family Watermelon that I'm super excited about.

I started propagating on January 21, 2019.
My first seedlings appeared on  January 26, 2019.
I up potted the first batch on February 6, 2019.

But on to the peppers, this is my current list of what I have.

Here is a pic of how I start them. I do multiple seeds in an 18 cell tray. It makes it easier to manage at first until I can get out into the greenhouse that I still have to build.

You can see how I use wooden popsicle sticks to hold my labels. I've since changed to includ how many seeds are in the cell as well as tray number on the label.

The Cherry Bombs were the first to pop up.

Brazilian Starfish coming on strong.

The Yellow Moruga Scorpion has a Tri Cotyledon, I actlly had about 4 of this from this pack of seeds.

So far I have about a third of them up potted to 36 cell trays.

Still got a long way to go. I'll be propagating my tomatoes tomorrow. Hoping for a great summer garden this year!

***Bonus here is some pics of the early seed test I did. These were propagated on December 27, 2018.

Your plantings are developing nicely, Matthew.
Really nice garden spaces.

I am really impressed that you got all those plants
in the ground in two hours! It would take me a week
to do that!

That's why I'm not 'PaulG Family Farms'

I had a friend helping me, so it wasn't too bad, hoping to get about 300 planted this weekend.

Got some more planted today. I'm still having issues with the first bunch of peppers I planted, not sure whats wrong with them I'll get some pictures tomorrow. They were doing great until I planted them. I sprayed some bifenthrin yesterday hoping that helps, and also stops squash bugs before they start.

The good news is everything else is doing just fine, the melons, cantaloupes, squash are all doing perfect, only lost one cantaloupe after plant out. I'll throw some seeds in a hole and hope it catches up.

Still haven't figured out my problems up there^ but I did get my fertigation system in this weekend, so I'll post some pics of that later in the week once everything is hooked up.

I took some pics of a random cross that was supposed to be black pearl.

Also looks like I might get a few clusters of muscadines this year.

Got everything planted in the main garden yesterday besides cucumbers. Now I just have to plant the extra tomatoes and peppers, and the seeded crops like corn, beans, okra, 2nd planting of squash.

The watermelons are doing great.

All the rows looking good.

Some tomatoes decided they were ready to grow. These are Orange Rousillini from MIGardener

I also did some pot planting as well a few weeks back.

The others are Chocolate Bhutlah, Butch T. Scorpion, and Trinidad Moruga Scorpion Satan Strain.

Also I think I figure out my leaf problem was just a water issue. I guess I under estimate how dry it was.

I'm growing a few different varieties.

Bradford Family: Old South Carolina variety that sells for $20-$25 each. Seeds alone are over $1 each after shipping.
Crimson Sweet
Charleston Grey
Art Combs Ancient: Found in a cave in the 20's, very drought resistant.
Sugar Baby
Yamato Cream: Yellow Flesh with a slight pear taste.
Beni Kodima: Small single serving melon from Japan that ripens early.

Going to see what grows and sells best here, I'm hoping people will want the Bradfords, I've been looking into those for the past 2 years, since I first heard about them.

Tell people you can only sell them the Bradfords if they save the seeds and return them to you.  Of course, they will most likely be crossed with your other watermelons. :mope:

I know the melons will probably cross, they are dependent on bees too much. I may try to hand pollinate a few with nets, but I could just see how they do this year, and plant all one type next year.

Just wanted to update and show you all my pubes.

Mini Rocoto

And finally after a month, my Orange Manzano
1LppZo6.jpg

I had given up on this, but kept misting it with water while doing everything else, and after a month it's almost ready to poke it's head up.

I'm nor really sure if I should just try to grow these indoors or not because I'm in SC and the summers here are hot. I may put them partially under some big Pecan trees, and used them to shade them from the hot afternoon sun.

Daily Double Update!

Today was the first time I fertilized using the EZ-FLO 2 Gallon Fertilizing System. I used the Miracle Gro standard solution, and for those wondering the 5.5lbs packs of Miracle Gro contain 5 individual packs, each of those packs are just shy of 50 TBS each. So I went with sitting #2 on the EZ-FLO which was a mix ratio of 250 to 1. Since I had the 2 gallon tank, that means that I was getting 500 gallons of water through the fertigation tank until it was empty. I decided to use the entire 5.5lbs of Miracle Gro which should be enough for 250 gallons, so I'm guessing that it's only doing half strength which is fine with me. At worst case it will do a normal amount. I let the water run without it for a while, then I let the feritigation system run for 30 minute.

Watermelons are wanting to run.

Also the squash are going crazy.

I got the cucumbers finished today, I still have to work on the trellis system for them and the tomatoes this weekend.

Also Lowes had Hardy Kiwi for half off so I grabbed one of those as well.

impressive system.  im thinking I may need to do this next year.

I may have missed it but what material are you using around the plants?

I'm using Dewitt Weed Barrier, I got it off Amazon. it's 4' x 300' a roll, I had to cut the holes in it my self, but it's well worth it because of the lack of weeds, I'll get a few more rolls to do other things next year.

Working on the overflow field today, planted some Aji Charapita, Thai, Habanero Paper Lantern and Biquinos today.
AV8ihJk.jpg

This is a great healthy looking plant.

Hoping to get the rest of the drip lines laid and plants planted in the next 2 days.

Also filled in some of the plants in the main garden that died with Jalapenos, and Habaneros.
