Just make sure to go to a well respected sushi joint for your first taste. It would be a shame to get some grocery store crap in a little plastic package for your first try. I love sushi! I like to make a thick (almost paste) mix of soy sauce and wasabi for dipping. :)

It TOTALLY depends upon the sushi chef(s) at a given grocery store - - - the ones at the grocery store where I shop are amazing - I will put theirs against any sushi restaurant any day, and I have eaten sushi all over this country. But keep in mind that it's popular enough in my area that this store now employs two full-time sushi chefs - that makes a huge difference, too, as if you're in an area where it's not so popular, it may have been sitting there a day or even two.

I wasn't referring to your post when I said "grocery store crap". We have very good high-end grocery stores here too that employ full time sushi chefs and the sushi is alright. I was talking about the pre-packaged stuff from Trader Joes or something. I wouldn't say I've had sushi from all over the country, but I've had it in several cities. The best sushi I've had was in Minneapolis, Chicago and Las Vegas which is funny to me because I tried 2 joints in San Fran, 1 in Portland and one in Seattle. I would assume the cities on or near the coast would have better sushi than the totally landlocked ones. When I had the west coast sushi, I went with family or friends who live there and recommended those joints. The best was in Noe Valley San Fran(can't remember the name), but not as good as Minneapolis. Go figure! :crazy:
 
the spicy cajun crawfish roll at kanpai. just a maki with cawfish tails and some type of mayo based sauce. probably sriracha in there. i thinks there's crack in there to because i can't ever stop eating them.
 
I think you're on to something.... I've had crack every day for at least the last week and a half.... oops - I mean sushi!:rofl:
 
I love blue fin toro (the belly) the best i've had was a thick cut from the belly of a fish I caught while in fishing deep waters in ensanada. Normally we don't get bluefin, but it was warm a few years back and I hooked up with a 85lb one. It's tradition to eat the eye so of course I followed that up with a good chunk of toro cut while the fish was still thrashing on the deck. I wrapped it between 2 pieces of seaweed with a dab of soy and chased it down with a beer. Amazing!!

I still eat sushi twice a week since I can get daily caught fish and the gf loves making it. I enjoy going out, but it's so much cheaper and fresher to make your own.
 
Hmmm, so hard to decide. I guess this is what I wish I was eating right now, no doubt it changes depending on the day.

-Toro
-Sake
-Uni
-Aji (not the pepper)
-Chuka Iidako

That list could go on and on... there is a bunch of other stuff that is great but I hardly ever see it in the places I go. In fact my current location doesn't have good sushi, so I just do it all myself.
 
They were making "valentine's sushi" today, so I picked some up. Lump crab meat with just barely enough mayo to hold it together, cucumber, mango, and cream cheese wrapped inside seaweed and brown rice. On the outside, slices of avocado topped with slices of strawberry, then drizzled with honey and teriyaki sauce. A bit on the sweet side, but good!
 
I make sushi from time to time....but I'm afraid you guys'd pick it to pieces if I posted photos.....

Y'all seem very intense and knowledgable about sushi.....and I'm not. I just enjoy making it and eating it. ;)
 
.... if that's not just an attention-getting ploy, I don't know what is. Geesh - good sushi is good sushi. If you make it and aren't afraid to eat it, it's worth posting!
 
Went and got sushi for lunch. The sushi guy had a mischievious look on his face - said he was glad I showed up, because he made something new he thought I would like. I asked him if it was hot. He laughed and said "you will see!" I was game, so bought it then went home, and have now eaten it. I think I'll go back - today yet - to find out what he put in it. My mouth is still burning..... :mouthonfire:
 
Uni is by far my favorite! But Hamachi is also amazing. I also love to get a quail egg on top of some mackerel roe. Oh man that sounds good!
 
New at the store today: basically california roll slices laid flat, drizzled with hot sauce, then piled high with a mix of shrimp, tuna, salmon, avocado and mango. Colorful, spicy, and delicious!
 
Do I eat sushi every day? ALMOST.

Today picked up my current "usual", and the guys made a sample for me. Basically it was a tofu pocket, into which they put some brown rice, hot chile sauce, and a HUGE slab o' salmon. yumphlblghalrup. Sorry.... I forget it's rude to talk with my mouth full.... ;o)
 
Envision..... a square tray with slices of crab, cucumber and cream cheese rolled in brown rice, drizzled with wasabi and sriracha sauces, then piled high with a colorful assortment of chopped avocado, shrimp, tuna, salmon, shrimp, and mango. OOooooooh, pretty....... and pretty tasty!
