Well, I suppose I finally took the plunge and am now legal to sell plants in the State of Texas. I got my tax number this morning.

My first attempt at selling plants/seedlings will be at First Monday Trade Days in Weatherford, Texas, 3/4 April 2009.

I am excited and scared at the same time...I just want to sell some pepper plants locally to get a feel for the business...

each to their own but I can't see charging anyone more than $6 USD a pound for the exotic peppers...no matter what the market is...

I had a hard time convincing myself to ask $6 USD each good healthy Bhut Jolokias.....

Here in New York i pay $8.99 a pound for o habs... Some markets here have them at around $4/lb but they're always unripe or half rotting and the seeds are black.

Please ship fresh pods to NY!

AJ,

I understand but can see the other side of the coin. A capitalist is going to maximize his profits, selling the products he has at a price people are willing to pay. But I'm like you, I'm selling most of my plants for $2.50 each because that's a price I would pay. But the plants I have to move to larger pots, I'm charging more - $4.

Mike

I totally understand about supply and demand and the costs associated with it...however, I am satisfied to make 4 times what I have in the plants I sell...I saw on the internet somewhere that some place in Georgia is asking $25 USD for two Bhut Jolokia plants and a few seeds plus shipping...IMO that is a rip off...

I am not doing this to get rich off of, rather just to try and recoop some of my costs for my hobby...

As far as pods go...the superhots will only sell to a narrow spectrum of the market...we will see how it goes this fall when harvest starts...

I'm quite happy if I can get $10Cnd/pound for rare super-hotties, and with my milder peppers there is no way I can sell for as low as the Grocery/box stores at $1-2/lb

I am not growing these, they are imported from another state AIR FRIEGHT
in perishables cold storage + Courier to my door, then package + distrabution ( fuel , HR, logitics ) So I guess I have to recoveer costs somewhere.
My prices will come down dramaticly by next season, down to about $30.00AUD a KG, And I would sell my seedlings about the same as you.
Powders and DESEEDed are different as are PASTES.

Ian, I am not criticizing you at all...please don't take it that way...you are in business and have to make a profit...

I sell my dehydrated peppers for four dollars an ounce which turns people off...so I am changing my tactics to bagging them in 100 gram packages and selling them for $10...almost the same as 4 an ounce but doesn't hurt as much when you see a quart freezer bag full of dried peppers...

They are not Aust chillis dose only have enough for marcel & alex -

I Have consignment of 1 acre , and just expand to 5 acres. All bhut.
Marcel has already been on the phone and probably will end up securing alot of it ! LOL

What sort of dehydrator and time do you use on your peppers ? I assume many KG at the same time ? Did you have to get licence to process and pack ? Commercial packing is always VERY similar here in Aus.

Thanx ian

I use a 9 tray excalibur...last season, I didn't open/split any of the pods and they took a loooonnnnnngggg time to dry...36 hours for the thicker fleshed pods...dried on 125F...I just fill each tray up and let 'er rip...

I have no license as of yet...but I have not found the laws on dehydrated pods...I suppose I could say I am selling them for seed... ;)

I probably won't ever get a commercial license for packing...too much expense for me...and from what I have read, if you use a commercial kitchen to make your stuff, you can't store it at home, it has to be stored at a commercial kitchen (or somewhere else approved)...

I just give my products to friends or use it myself...

Well wish i read this earlier and about time to,Love the setup/posters etc wish you every success and see you have started slwly but still early in the year,my cousin grows around,30,000 chili plants and they are just about to go to u.k garden centers and plant suppliers so just starting into the season in the u.k,All the best :)

As would I...but I'm already here in FTW. I'm smoking a batch of savinas and bhuts right now...and being the stellar dumb ass that I am...I seeded the savinas, then got in a hurry, and didn't seed the bhuts for next season. DOH!

So...whatcha got?
