Tomato plants dying, now moving to peppers?

I am trying to get some pics. We went 20 days without rain here in Alabama, then rain everyday. But I have been managing the water with soaker hoses. Definitely not a water issue. No bugs that I can see. Leaves did not go limp, just small growth, a little yellowish, then grayish brown and...

Tomato plants dying, now moving to peppers?

All, Some of my larger tomato plants are starting to die off. However, it's the new growth that is dying and shriveling up. Usually you see the bottom growth dying, and moving up the plant. This is starting to occur on a few pepper plants also. Nutrient deficiency? Calcium or Boron? Any...

    misc Ladybugs for pest control

I spent 5 minutes yesterday watching a five inch long mantid destroying everything that moved on my grape vine Saturday.  They truly are the answer.

    misc Ladybugs for pest control

I had some Praying Manti in my garden last year.  They raised complete hell on all aphids and other similar bad bugs.  They have a much, much bigger appetite than ladybugs.   They are back this year on the prowl already.

organic Jobe's Organic Vegetable Spikes for young plants?

Has anybody used this? I ordered a bag of 50 spikes. They are 2-7-4 NPK, very slow release. I tried to transfer some of my seedlings in Jungle Growth mix this year with horrible results. Purple stems, losing Cotyledons, yellow leaves. It looked like phosphorous lock to me. I grew the...

seeds Experiment showing water level is very vital to germination

Okay, so I've had trouble germinating pepper seeds this year, my second year growing. Last year I had great success. I did not really know what I was doing, so I watered the tray with the Jiffy Pellets, put my seeds in, put them on a heat mat, and 8 days later, everything was up. I added no...

media For those using Jiffy, or other, Peat Pellets ...

I wish I could recall what I did last year differently, when I had every pepper pellet germinate in 9 days or less.  This year has been horrible.

media For those using Jiffy, or other, Peat Pellets ...

Of course, seeds need three things to develop typically - heat, moisture, and oxygen. Could packing the peat too tightly in a peat pellet be a cause of slow germination due to lack of oxygen? Should the seed be pressed into the soil and peat packed on top, or should it just be lying there and...

    seeds Slow germination causes?

pH of tap water is 7.4 or so.  Makes the pH of the peat pellets about 6.25-6.5, so pretty much perfect. I have given up on solutions.  Just wait.

    seeds Slow germination causes?

So, I am more frustrated than ever .... By day 7 of the latest run, I had a germinated purple jalapeno, scotch bonnet, tomatillo, chocolate bhut, and trinidad scorpion. It is now day 12, and NOTHING since .... Included in here are some red bells and orange bells.  The seeds are from three...

    seeds Temperature Cycles During Germination

Has anybody here experimented with temperature cycles during germination? Any difference in the following: 1. Holding at a constant 82-87 F throughout germination 2. Cycling between 82-87 F during the day, and allowing a dropoff to ambient at night?

    seeds Slow germination causes?

I'm going to do a little experimentation on this and see if I can leach the lime from the pots.

    seeds Slow germination causes?

My background is chemical engineering, so it makes me wonder if there is a leaching issue over time.  Those pellets from the first tray were from last year.  The new tray has new pellets.

    seeds Slow germination causes?

Got confirmation today that the pH of those first pots was low.  Jiffy says they should be 5.3 pH.  The first lot was 4.9 pH.  Second lot is 5.5 pH.

    seeds Slow germination causes?

Some early results are in: At day 19, I now have 19/37 pots germinated with roughly a 70% germination rate on the pots with flowers. This tray had no pre soak, and was sitting about 87 F. It took 18 days for a Tomatillo to germinate. I have no purple jalapenos up. At day 3 on the new tray...
