If you want to grow artichokes try Romanesque or Violetto Chioggia, they are more hardy and tolerant than Green Globe or Imperial Star(the varieties that you usually see offered in catalogs)...they should be fine for your climate, and don't plant them in direct sun...a place that gets morning...

I transplant into 9 oz. clear plastic cups with holes punched in the bottom, the mix I use is 2 parts Miracle Grow Organic Compost, 2 parts Miracle Grow Cactus soil, 1 part perlite....wait a week before using dilute fertilizer solution.

I don't think its similar to Ethiopian Brown, Ethiopian Thunder is a medium hot, deep red fruity chilly, probably similar to Kashmiri....I am planning some crosses with this variety if everything goes well. Here's the link for a pic and description...

For my artwork and photography I use a Sony Cybershot (super steadyshot 5.1 mega-pixels) and find this works great....the thing I like is that you can adjust the white balance for the light source you are using, and it auto-adjusts to keep the picture steady if you are just snapping pics without...

I would move them away from the lights a couple of inches and see how they react....it sounds like they're too close.
