I just tried an unripe one of the same variety, its hot as hell so im guessing the ripeness had something to do, maybe they have been on the branch for too long (they have been there for quite a while now)

Same, I just use the mosquito netting tbh xd But at least the growing conditions aren't rain and such this year so that is great

Do leave them in a wet paper covered in cling film (perforated) the ones that sprout are viable, the rest will just waste your time :P

it really does not come down to the "perfect conditions" you speak of, rather, when winter comes the plant will kinda go hybernate due to the lack of sun. But last year (my first year growing) I started in july and got a harvest

Dropping flowers does not necessarily have anything to do with the hairy stuff. Not only pubescenses have hairs on them.
