how long does a pepper variety last?

Hi there, I've been thinking about pepper diversity lately. It wasn't that long ago that bhut jolokias, fataliis, and Trinidad 7 pots were introduced to the global chilihead community. Now, they each come in every color: red, yellow, mustard, cappuccino, chocolate brown, white, black, etc --...

    Adjuma Pepper Seeds Needed

Suriname Red, Aji oemba (a.k.a. adjuma, adjoemba, aji umba, etc.), and Madame Jeanette are all different, but sometimes people make the mistake of mixing them up. Suriname red is bright red, which makes it easy to tell apart. Here's a nice comparison of Madame Jeanette and aji oemba. The text...

Growing & Inventory management: what's your system?

I just got finished with labelling and shipping a little over 100 seed packets to about 20 people. Now, the numbers aren't huge, but it was still a substantial amount of detail-oriented work, and it seems to be the kind that could be helped with some software. I could easily see software...

    Treasures from Ghana

Wow, that didn't take long! I am out of Ghanian peppers for trade. Thanks for all the interest. After my current crop ripens (which should take a month or two) I should have plenty more.

    Treasures from Ghana

My pleasure -- glad you liked the pics. :) I really wish there was a way to share the taste. The way that they cook, and the complex, layered, bold flavors are really something that needs to be experienced. Garden eggs are actually a kind of eggplant. They use them a lot in different soups...

    Treasures from Ghana

Digging through old photos, I found a picture of the stall in the village of Nkrakum, where I got these seeds in the first place. Clearly, the farmers have an eye for aesthetics. :) You can also see Ghanaian "loka tomato", as well as their "garden eggs" (or "ntorwah). Here's a close-up of the...

    Treasures from Ghana

Well, I'll post picture, but in the interest of full disclosure, I need to say none of my peppers are that far along -- I had a late start this year. Forum contributor "Hot Stuff" has some really impressive mako akokɔsrade plants. I have a local friend who's been growing them in a...

    Treasures from Ghana

It's a much stronger flavor than I recollect for fatalii, but I don't know about datil. I'm actually growing datil, fatalii, and mako akokosrade together this season, so I'll be sure to give them a side-by-side comparison. [Wierd; the text screws up the 'open O' in the comments, but handles it...

    Treasures from Ghana

Hi there, A lot of folks here have shown interest in growing the pepper seeds I collected in Ghana in August of 2011. Now, that the first crop is starting to ripen, I realized I made a bit of an oversight: I forgot to share the pictures! If you're growing these seeds, here's a snapshot of what...

    Shito (Ghanian pepper sauce)

The sell it here locally, so I haven't had to make it myself. To do it right, you're gonna neet kpakpo shito peppers (miniature, green, bell-pepper shaped C. chinense pods with a unique flavor.).

    C. frutescens: which varieties produce the biggest pods?

Are there any big ones? For all the other domesticated species, I can think of at least a few stuffable varieties... except this one. What am I missing?

Those are not proper Madame Jeanettes. They should be a bit longer and more wrinkled/wavy, like this: These are how I remember them. This is a Madame Jeanette I grew from seeds collected in Paramaribo. The flavor is definitely in the habanero category, but still quite distinct.

    Treasures from Panama

I just got back from Panama, and I wanted to share some of the pepper varieties I found. We spent a fair amount of time in the autonomous region of Kuna Yala, home of the Kuna people. The Kuna people grow 53 varieties of peppers, which they list in their traditional chant “Kapur...

food Crazy Cook Off - April- Hawaiian Spam Luau- all weekend in 1st weekend in April

So, a Hawaiian-themed chili product for spam, not a Hawaiian spam-with-chilis recipe? That's a bit more challenging. Hm... Need to think, need to think...

    AzaMax

What is the recommended concentration for peppers, exactly? I asked the guys at the local hydro shop, but they don't seem to have much experience growing peppers. I used 5 mL in 1 L of water, which seemed to have worked, but the seedlings appeared a bit... stressed afterwards.
