Do you ever let doubles grow

Oh yeah. Those are perfectly good looking seedlings. If you have steady hands, you can also pull the doubles or triples when they're very young and still only have the tap root. Just be really gentle. And then, poke a little hole with a skewer or chopstick and just pop it in.

    Kramer Grew a Pepper (Maybe)

Well, it's been about a month since I documented the pepper progress.   They've been very happy, so happy actually that I've had to move some outside since there's just no more room inside.     Pittsburgh weather: Looking typically lame for early May.  I'll probably have to move some of these...

fermenting Adding new pepper mash to 2 week old mash

Yup, it's perfectly fine especially if the old mash is already "cooking" which it definitely should be by two weeks.  Actually, when I make mashes I like to take a tablespoon or two of brine from an earlier ferment and just add that to the mash and stir it in.  Like a direct injection of...

    Kramer Grew a Pepper (Maybe)

Thanks PaulG, even for the moral support.   I know, sometimes there just aren't any obvious answers.  Such is life when you're growing plants in places and under conditions they were never truly meant to grow.   I'll just keep on keeping on and hopefully when they go outside next month they'll...

    Kramer Grew a Pepper (Maybe)

So about those tomatoes..   Never grown tomatoes before, but figured lots of you do.  These things keep dropping their lower branches.  At first they get kind of bubbly, and I figured, hell that's just like the edema I've got on some of my peppers.  No big deal.  But, then the leaves dry out...

misc What's everyone growing in 2021

This year I'm growing   - x3 San Marzano (Tomato, for fermented ketchup and also cooked down and used on homemade pizzas and the like) - x2 Pepperoncini (Fermented or pickled for sandwiches) - x4 Hot Banana (My dad wanted these, but I'll definitely enjoy them too) - x4 Fresno (Really impressed...

Hello - Anyone have any info on a good PH meter for sauce making?

Didn't know they even made something like that.  Pretty cool!

Keep Grow Bags Off The Deck

That is definitely my speed lol, but the lady wants nothing touching the deck, so it can dry out.     That's a good idea, but I'd have to buy quite a few tables.  Keep it in mind for down the road though.     Actually, I am going to buy a couple of those nicer ones for out front.  Cool stuff...

Keep Grow Bags Off The Deck

How do you guys do it, economically of course?   I've basically been informed that if I want to use the deck (which I very much do), I need to keep the bags off the wooden deck, so it does not rot or damage the finish.  No problem.   But what's an aspiring urban pepper farmer to do when there...

    food All Things Chicken Wings!

Oh yeah. Get you some of them big fat ones and layer on a little olive oil, salt, pepper, whatever else you like. 425 that for 30 min and it's as juicy as anything. Low smoke oil like olive makes a crust in of itself too that's most tasty. I mostly bake wings too, but the best damn wings I've...

    Kramer Grew a Pepper (Maybe)

In typical Pittsburgh fashion, we had some 80 degree days earlier this month and now might see snow flurries Wednesday this week.  Meh..   Most plants have really slowed down, on the verge of being root bound.  So, I gave them a haircut and potted up to squeeze out a last bit more growth before...

    Jalepenõ plant has stopped growing...

A lot of great advice from veterans here already. I had similar issues, i.e. seedlings not growing at all for weeks. Repotted in a high quality mix and, well, lesson learned. Instant growth. The only thing I might add, and it's not entirely necessary, is the pot/cup looks kinda big for the...

    Hello from Pittsbugh, PA

2 new Pittsburghers in the past 2 weeks.  I like it!  Greetings and good luck this summer  ;)

    Kramer Grew a Pepper (Maybe)

With about 50 plants, watering has become a chore.  I saw a YouTube video that inspired me to put together a bit of a watering rig, and I thought I would share because I love it so far.   It's just a 5 gallon bucket, a Vivosun pump, an interconnect, a short garden hose, and a wand.   First I get...

chinense My ghosts are not ghosts?

I kind of doubt it, plants like (and need) calcium and magnesium.  Whether or not they are in usable forms in hard water, I'm not sure, but I will say - If you're concerned about water quality, just get an inline hose filter.  Commonly used in RV's, they hook right up to a garden hose and can...

Close! You've got the right species, but that one's a NuMex Cayenne, Las Cruces I think they call it. For buffalo sauce!

    Kramer Grew a Pepper (Maybe)

Just a short update today.  Everything is going well in the peppermania world.   Nothing new, they've become pretty low maintenance besides rotating once a day over my lunch break and watering every 2-3 days.   Getting a bit crowded though, and we're having some unusually warm days here in...

Anyone seen this on pepper plant leaves.

My carboneros do that a lot.
